I think the majority of those variations will be adopted for Super Rugby. I think you'll find that these changes will also be adopted at the Community Rugby level in Australia as well. The ARU are in the process of ratifying which laws will be adopted.

the one rule that really annoys me is 3 points for a penalty & 5 for a try. It is just so boring to watch teams just slot over kicks whenever they get a pen. within the 40. Once that gets changed (if it ever does) the games will be far more hands on.

Also, on the referee subj. as an ex-ref myself you learn to appreciate the stress and fitness that these top guys are under. they are constantly controlling and looking over 30 men who are going at each other. As soon as you lose control of the match it is basically a free-for-all, and that never happens at super level - not because of the players, but because of how the refs handle each situation. Absolute respect for those guys, i never get angry at them

Disappointed to see Lawrence (mark) and Marius go. Marius Imo had a few top quality games last year (Reds V Chiefs comes to mind), and we all know how good Mark Lawrence is. Ian Smith wasn't bad either.

Easy to tell you're a Reds supporter. Said Ian Smith was referee two years ago for the second half when Walshy broke down mid game Tahs vs Reds when the Reds deliberately collapsed the scrum under the posts after being marched 20 metres backwards and refused to rule a penalty try. Last year he was the AR who called a forward pass on a Tah try that Lyndon Bray announced on TV later was not forward. It was right under his nose. He had a history of making wrong decisions that favoured the Reds. Tah fans are very glad to see the back of him.

Agree 100% on Mark Lawrence. As good a referee as Joubers or Walshy, maybe even better. Infinitely better than Kaplan. SA politics did him in. Marius was inconsistent - some games he was brilliant, some games very average.

I am not sure that you can define referees by picking out incidents where they made mistakes as all referees will make them. I also don't think you can use subjective situations like the penalty try that you refer to. I am a Tahs fan and I don't think that they should have received a penalty try in the later stages of that game in 2011.
re Mark Lawrence, he has been a fine referee but I think it is time for hime to go. He will be nearly 50 years old when the next World Cup comes around. IMO he cost himself a World Cup position in 2011 when he had a poor game in the Tri Nations in 2010 - he had the worst game fo the 6 referees used through the tournament. The IRB Selectors basically picked their 10 referees for the 2011 RWC soon after this and then managed them through to the tournament.
re Ian Smith, he had his best season as a referee in 2012 and given that he had improved significantly and that SANZAR had invested him in for a few years, it seemed a very strange time to cut a referee who had now completed his apprenticeship.

Normally you can excuse a mistake or two, but those two decisions very arguably changed the outcome of the games. In 2011, the Reds scrum was going to ground for a lot of the match. Then the Reds collapsed on a scrum about 5 metres out. At that point, given what had happened previously, Horwill should have been warned. He wasn't. The Tahs opted to reset the scrum and the Reds collapsed it to stop a pushover try. Only then did he issue a warning. The collapse was blatant, about 3 metres out from the line. Classic penalty try conditions, but not awarded.

Last year's AR decision was right in front of him so its hard to find an excuse for it and in the context of a game where the Waratahs were clearly on top it ended up being such a bad decision that the referees boss came out in the following week and apologised for it.

As you can no doubt guess, it still rankles.

Because the only reason the Reds won those games was due to Ian Smith. Must be nice to live in such a simple world.

Oh, and when were the Reds marched 20 metres back in that first game you mentioned?

Burgess kicked ahead, Reds grounded in goal. 5m scrum. Two penalties given against the Reds, the second included a warning to Horwill. The second penalty was close to a penalty try, but how many pro refs give out penalty tries for the second penalty 5m out? Also bear in mind that the Reds had just subbed Daley for Sheperdson before that sequence of scrums. Answer to my own rhetorical question: probably none. edit: wasn't under the posts either. Was about 10m or 15m in from the sideline.

You can go back and find heaps of game in which good refs made a bad decision that may have affected the outcome. I suggest you move on.

I like the idea of refcam, though I don't think it will have much benefit for the game other than as a coaching tool for referees. It doesn't give a wide enough view of the game and will be too jumpy to provide a decent viewing experience.

I've had a look at the foxsports clip and it gives a good insight into the speed of the game at the breakdown and gives good detail on what the referee is actually saying to the players.

Surely it will be used for very brief periods when it shows something interesting.

The times when I think it could be interesting is showing a scrum feed and when the referee is dealing with an infringing player.

Showing the referee's view when they're trying to break up a bit of a brawl and admonishing a player and handing them a yellow/red card would certainly be interesting to see.

The three key matches, Highlanders vs Chiefs, Bulls vs Stormers and Waratahs vs Reds, have been allocated three very good refs - Walsh, Peyper and Pollock respectively. All three are likely to be ferocious, especially at the breakdown, and an experienced, accurate referee should be able to keep a lid on any shenanigans.
