Stormers No10 back where it started

Young Gary van Aswegen restarts his Stormers career in the same place where it all started for him the first time 12 months ago – in a pre-season DHL Series match against the Lions at Newlands.
Well okay, one thing has changed this year, with the Stormers team sponsors taking over the naming rights of an event that was last year sponsored by Neo-Africa and which this year includes the Cheetahs in place of the Sharks. But otherwise it is a rewind for Van Aswegen, who has been out of rugby since his second serious injury of the 2011 season sidelined him early in last year’s Currie Cup.
Van Aswegen has been back in training and has been looking fit and well conditioned. He will be hoping to repeat last year’s impressive start to his senior Stormers career – he was playing under-21 rugby in 2010 – and thus put pressure on incumbent first choice Peter Grant when he returns from Japan next month.
Flyhalf was a major problem for the Stormers last year not because of the quality players available but because of the unfortunate series of injuries that at one stage saw them turn to their fifth choice pivot at a later stage of Super Rugby. However out of that flyhalf crisis has emerged depth, with Dimitri Catrikilis taking his opportunity to stamp himself on the Currie Cup and he will challenge Van Aswegen and Grant strongly for the right to be the first choice No10.
As anticipated Stormers coach Allister Coetzee has called up a team for Friday night’s match against the Lions that is much stronger than the one that beat the Boland Cavaliers in Wellington a few days ago. Most of the first choice players are back in the mix, although Andries Bekker, Duane Vermeulen and one or two others are still completing their rehabilitation after long term injuries.
An interesting survivor from the Boland game is young lock Eben Etzebeth, which can be seen as just reward for his strong showing in Wellington. Rynhardt Elstadt is still due to return to the playing field after being sidelined since last year’s Super Rugby semifinal, but Etzebeth showed enough against Boland to suggest the two aggressive locks could have a strong competition for a starting place in Super Rugby.
Coetzee wanted to see how Etzebeth would make the step up in physicality in his graduation to senior level last week, and clearly he ticked that box. Now he needs to take a step further by showing he can mix it with Super Rugby quality opposition.
Siya Kolisi and Steven Kitshoff are two other young forwards who impressed in their first season of senior rugby who get a chance to stake a claim by playing against the Lions. Frans Malherbe, who did well against Boland, is on the bench, as is Nizaam Carr.
Prodigal son Joe Pietersen returns to fullback after a year away in France while Bryan Habana joins fellow World Cup Springboks Gio Aplon, Jean de Villiers, Juan de Jongh and skipper Schalk Burger in making their first start of the new season.

Personally I saw last weekend Francis and Coleman for the Stormers but Ricardo Croy look the best of them all, playing for Boland behind a losing pack.

I've commented on the Sharks before but I don't see how they improve, they've had the same type of squad for a few years and have always fallen a bit short. They need a coaching change up, I thought they got horribly exposed in that Currie Cup final.

As paarlbok noted a bit thin at lock perhaps but i think the sharks have the nucleus of a pretty solid forward pack. I'm expecting BDP to have a big year out from under Smit's shadow and the other player who I see standing out another the South Africans is Pat Lambie. He might be able to spark their team. But to be honest I don't know what new talent is coming for the Sharks and they do need a few young guns to add something to the current set up in order to stand a chance of winning.

You act like it's news that Butch is at the Lions...did you forget that he played most of the 2nd half of last years Super Rugby for them? The Lions are a young team and the experience he brings along with the ability to cover 10 and 12 would be invaluable to them.

With respect to Carlos, the playing aspect did not turn out very well (although to be fair to him I think that Lions team would've struggled even with Dan Carter at flyhalf!), but he seems to be doing well with the coaching of the backs and the mentoring of Elton Jantjies, so not too bad an investment at the end of the day.

Kings confirmed for Super Rugby

The Southern Kings’ place in the Vodacom Super Rugby competition in 2013 was reaffirmed at a Special Council Meeting of the South African Rugby Union (SARU) in Cape Town on Friday. Proposals on mechanisms to identity the four other South African entrants will be considered at a SARU Special General Meeting on March 30.
“The decision to include the Southern Kings in the 2013 Vodacom Super Rugby tournament was unanimously confirmed by the members,” said Jurie Roux, CEO of SARU on Friday.
“We will now look at the options to identify the other entrants to the competition, which will include further discussions with our SANZAR partners on the possibility of including a sixth South African team in the competition.
“The Unions will also be making their own recommendations and the outcome of those discussions and other proposals will be tabled for the Executive Council and ultimately a General Meeting to consider.”
