Any corroboration with this version of events? Or too many XXXX Golds?

I read that Beale said after the match that while he was in the right position, he was in two minds to call for the drop goal or not. Said that if he had his time over, he would have been a bit more forceful and decisive in calling for it.

Can't remember the article. If I find it I'll post a link.

Given how Joubert had been very strict on the defending team in rucks all night, I certainly would not be blaming anyone from the wallabies camp for choosing to play for the penalty. If anything, they get a plus next to their name for thinking so logically after a tiring (and friggen HOT) game. Negative play? Yes, but given the information they had at the time it was perhaps the correct choice? Strictly speaking, both choices (play for penalty or go for field goal) were tried by the two teams on the night and both failed to break the tie. Therefore were both choices wrong? Maybe one of the teams should have gone for a try instead :p

Daz, I pretty sure I heard Beale say that in an interview too, so if we both say we saw or read it we couldn't be wrong, could we???

He said at the presser that he thought they had gotten good pay through the middle so was keen on doing that. Sharpie and Dingo both said they backed that call.

There may have been another interview, but that came from his own mouth.

Beale and Harris were moving in and out of position, looked like they weren't quite sure what they wanted to do. I suspect it is true that Sharpe wanted to work for the penalty, but the execution sucked - compare to nz who kept the intensity up and probably could have just about scored a try if they wanted.

I still think Tapuai is a better 12 than 13 and he should swap with McCabe. I'm happy with Beale, Tapuai & McCabe but we just need more speed outside them. Harris had a great game but we really need the speed of JOC (James O'Connor) coming in from 15.

Speight is apparently eligible now.

He should take up the ring wing spot.

I was in section 311 right behind those posts and your Dad's assessment is quite correct. All around me thought Aus would align for the obvious drop goal tactic to win the match but to me it looked as though they either never seriously considered it, or were overcome with indecision over it. Assuming winning is important, it was a major lapse in on-fleld smarts and leadership IMO, and possibly coaching as every team should actively prepare for the drop in such late-game scenarios - umm, it's a match winner as regularly proven........November 2003 anyone?

No doubt this non-choice will be enthusiastically put down to 'we're developing and learning as a young team with many new players' theory, recycled as it is in Version 2.0 from late 2009/10 when we began the inexplicable failures of that period and poor technical and tactical skills were recycled into forward projections of hope and glory to come in future years, with no one ever held responsible for anything except excuse generation. "Guts and character" seems the new black that will carry us on to greater things just ahead as we grow and progress.

FWIW, Taps has consistently played better at 12 than 13 for the Reds and in that setting he's said himself that he's a better 12 than 13.

Right call to go for a penalty but wrong execution. They should have been looking to recycle faster and get the abs on the back foot to force them to concede a penalty. Instead they ambled around at every ruck and made it too easy to defend against.

Astonishing to watch 20+ phases of ABs diving back on side and doing everything physically possible to ensure no penalty. Proof that they know the laws and that they have the intelligence to apply them when absolutely needed.

I reckon that 4 minutes of rugby should be the benchmark of how rucks are supposed to work and any player that doesn't move with that alacrity to get out of the way and onside in the first 78 minutes is obviously due a penalty.

I must be feeling my age, as it's taken until now for me to discover this bloody thread! I put two comments on the MOM thread an had one deleted and was verbaled by barbarian (deservedly, I guess) for the other!!
Needless to say, I haven't read the previous 32 pages of posts but will do so in next 24 hours.
Mrs Doug and I enjoyed the match because we enjoy watching a contest. Would much rather watch the Wobs draw 18-all with The Blacks, than watch an NRL Grand Final with a 40-0 result with plenty of tries, so I agree with Jamie Pandaray's comments and not Dean Ritchie's!
I assume there are plenty of comments re how well our scrum held up within this thread?

We even left our Granddaughter's second-birthday party early, to drive home to watch our beloved Wallabies!

Agreed, he would seem a more natural at 12 than 13. having said that, he offered more at 13 the other night, than most who have been tried in that position recently.
