Mods - could we please have an IRB icon?

I know there is a Sevens thread somewhere but I can't find it.

Fiji has taken out the Wellington Sevens, beating Samoa in the final. Australia beat South Africa in the Plate final. That's not a bad result.

Australia smashed Fiji in the quarter final of the Vegas 7s, 28-7.

We should be kicking off pretty much now v Samoa.

Whoever wins takes on the kiwis in the final.

We lost to the kiwis yesterday, but only 12-7.

As already mentioned in another thread; Kimani Situati, Ed Quirk and the electric Clinton Sills.

Adelaide Sevens

Australia are through to the Cup Semi Final after beating Fiji 26-22
Regardless of the result, Australia will leapfrog England into fouth spot on the IRB Sevens table

Secretely hoping this improved form could somehow end in Hong Kong glory next week.

Good to see Nick Edwards from the Uni GF side last year playing for the States.

Has Sills been sighted much at the Adelaide 7s?

McCutcheon and Gill also looked alright in the games I saw. I know it's been mentioned a fair bit, but Gill looked a lively sort but looks like he needs to be a little bigger for the S14.

mmm I hope all the other super franchises make this mistake of thinking that he is going to be too small, so they keep there gurbby hands off him.

7s is the perfect game for him at this stage of his development - it will help him a great deal.

But rest assured he is a future gem of Queensland rugby.

He could make it in the S14 on heart but test rugby is another matter. He's only 86kgs with a light frame and will probably struggle to put on much even though he's still only 17. If he weighed the same as McCaw he could have been McCaw no.2 as he resembles the great All Black in the way he plays the position.

Good to see Eddie Quirk playing 7s this year as it is just what he needs. He was a hot head when I saw him play schools rugby. He got a red card once and the first thing he did in the next game he played was to give somebody an unwanted coat hanger across the chops. 7s refs are precious when it comes to rough play and it looks like Eddie has mended his ways.

On the semi-final: it looked like men against boys in both 7 skills and physique but good on them for getting that far as they did in LV IIRR.

Sills is out but he was electrifying early in the year. He's as fast as a greyhound but built like one too. He's still playing Colts as he's not robust enough for grade yet and not really a footie player either. But watch this space.

Keep in mind Gill is only 18 I think. So another couple of years in the gym, and by the time he is 20 should be in good condition for Super rugby.

Possible bolter replacement for Braid?

Australia just got knocked out of the semis by Samoa.

There is no doubt that he is being groomed as the long term 7 for Queensland but he won't be ready to step into Braid's shoes straight away, we will need some kind of stopgap. I wouldn't even mind seeing Quirk there under the new (old) interpretations. But Gill will be good to go on his 20th birthday. The long term Queensland back row if we can keep them is
Quirk, Gill, Shatz.

Also it will be awesome to see the heir apparent to Waughs no7 jersey Pat McCutcheon get some runs either this year or definatley next year. He has been a star in the making for 4 or 5 years and is finally at the weight and playing maturity to step up as a loosie of super rugby standard.

He wasn't a specialist 7 in his younger days as he usually played 8 but he was a bit light for that spot in senior rugby. Uni used him at 7 a lot in 2009 and he looked good in my eyes and obviously to the Tahs mafia also. The part I can't work out is why Chris Alcock (an 8 at club level but obviously only a 7 for Super rugby) got a S14 rookie contract ahead of him for 2010.

I'm assuming that Alcock won't be with the Tahs next year, nor all-rounder backrower Coridas. At last we could have a back up for Waugh in the Tahs squad - and 3 ex-Joeys and Oz schools captains. :) :) :)

What's the go with Coridas? I have never seen him play. but he looks like a prototype number 6. you waratahs mob just can't get enough of those types.

Dunno to be honest. I'm guessing that he hasn't performed well with the Junior Tahs and is being overlooked. Last weekend he got just a few minutes for the JWs against the Runners and I can't even remember him against the Oz Barbarians - though I hardly recognised anybody that night in the driving rain.

He looked good enough for Eastwood last year but he's a bit like the ex-Kiwi cricketer Cunis - not quite one nor the other. He's either to tall for a 7 or to light for a 6 or 8. He looks like a good backrower but hard to fit into a Super XV.

Love the fact the Gill has played Qld 2nd XV and Oz 7s, but won't be able to play premier grade for Sunnybank until June.

Robbie has had a few sessions with Gill over the years through NTS etc. One that stays in my mind was in the middle of a 1 on 1 tackling drill Gill must have missed 10-12 tackles in a row (just having a bad day) but he didn't get frustrated or angry, just kept going. I guess with Deans watching on you are keen to impress.

that temperament combined with Quirk's lunacy - could be the perfect marriage. ha ha.
