    Melbourne Rebels 2024

Oh I don't dispute that. In an ideal world we have our own domestic comp. But we don't live in an ideal world, particularly when it comes to rugby.

    Melbourne Rebels 2024

Yes the upshot of that is that some games would have to be played in Melbourne. I get that not having one 'home ground' is an issue for both bands of supporters, and that both would want in their city. There is no simple solution but the objective is to grow the game in both areas, so whatever...

    Melbourne Rebels 2024

I don't want either to go, but what I was referring to is what you allude to in your last point. In the event that the Rebels are wound up, Victorian rugby players still require a professional pathway. They could just be scattered around ad lib but the obvious solution would be for the...

    Melbourne Rebels 2024

I still see this as a campaign to get the Rebels under RA control, pure and simple. The fact that RA allow Tupou (They pay his top up) to come south means they see a future in Victoria. There is absolutely no commercial sense in the RA trying to cut off (at a minimum) 25% of their market? Agree...

    Super Rugby General Chat

We are talking about 2 completely different things here. You are talking about a full merger of state/territory unions. I'm referring to an alliance with regards to player pathways/development as the catchment to service one professional team (in the hypothetical event that the Rebels cease to...

Well just look after your own as they are currently then, and we're both happy.

    Super Rugby General Chat

Regardless of that....so you're happy to expand the ACT catchment north to proper NSW rugby heartland, but not south to the whole of Victoria? (this is all hypothetical mind you)

    Super Rugby General Chat

More like there were more clubs than just Orange Emus and a few southern one team clubs forming part of the voting process.

No. Hooper went to school in Bathurst and Staniforth in Orange then Parramatta for a start. I'm sure there are a few Canberrans in there. That doesn't alleviate what I am getting at - I'm not being at all critical of either their pathway or their player development. What I am being critical...

    Super Rugby General Chat

I would understand your cynicism if the ACT/SIRU catchment produced more than a handful of its own professional standard rugby union football players per 4 year cycle. Edit: produced = played junior rugby there.

I agree, I can't see the Brumbies being cut. From what we have seen so far (financially), it would more likely be the Rebels......and it would then make more sense for Victoria to be absorbed into the Brumbies catchment rather than some half baked JV with the 6th NZ team.

'union fans in Australia'. As opposed to Australian citizens who are union fans'. Edit: I've just realised this is the SU\uper Rugby thread so I assume you're pointing out the dominance of Reds supporters.

    Australian Rugby / RA

I didn’t direct anything at you, it was about the general tone of the thread. We don’t know if we have the right people in charge or not, I’m prepared to give them a bit of time before making judgement though. The decisions and strategies so far seem to be a bit more equitable than those of...

    Australian Rugby / RA

Yes I think the holiday alcohol consumption 'hang-xiety' is causing a bit of an exaggeration. The code is not healthy here but it's not dead either. The right people with the right solution can revive it, we just aren't sure who the right people are and what the right solution is.
  15. KOB1987

    Australian Rugby / RA

I think rather than a full merger of league and union a more logical shift would be to be able to select players from both codes to represent at national level. This would require some rule changes so that the players can readily shift between the codes, and would primarily, if not exclusively...

The one and only Wallaby Coach thread

Happy new year everyone, back from my self imposed semi ban. I saw the article pop up on my feed yesterday and immediately thought of both of the comments above. Joe Schmidt is our man.

    Melbourne Rebels 2024

So if hypothetically the 'catchment' of Victoria were put up for tender you don't think the Brumbies would express interest in it? You know more about the politics than me but it seems a no brainer. Note, this is different to an enforced merger, I get the opposition to that. Edit: be careful...
  18. KOB1987

    Melbourne Rebels 2024

Without referring to it as a merger, if the Rebels do fold it would be pretty logical for the Brumbies to absorb Victoria into their catchment. You are obviously opposed to the Brumbies being anything but Canberra and the southern half of NSW but rugby in Australia is at a crossroads and needs...

    Aussie Player Exodus

OK my bad, I thought they did. However he has citizenship somehow obviously, perhaps one of his parents was also born there, that qualifies him.

Easily if he happened to be born there
