Lucky that was just a trial game? Seriously - the back row were simply awful - imo Gamble is nowhere near a genuine #7 - Reds Back Row really showed how to play the game. Must be some positives to take away, but struggling to find any :-(

    Australian Rugby / RA

NRL can make it an all year business then, and players can move around - Rugby Union is doing very well in Europe (England and France in particular), but there are English teams under financial duress who could go under (in England - Newcastle are lucky there is no relegation this year).

Can you explain (briefly) what Super Rugby round means? Was this round last night not part of Super Rugby?

5000 at Rebels tonight (which is ok given tix were only available Mon), and 8000 at Force? These numbers are similar to the smaller English Clubs which have small grounds. The OZ franchises will have to reduce their cost base to sustain at these crowd levels.

Let's hope TT hasn't cracked a bone in his wrist - he looked uncomfortable.

There looked to be no discernible game plan from the Rebels - and CG needs to go back to kicking school. That said, Brumbies #7 and #8 were outstanding.

    Waratahs 2024

Reimer was outstanding tonight....I'll keep an eye on him.

Super Rugby will be over by the time this is resolved!

Yes - RA are paying running costs for 2024 - numbers reported by AFR were around $5M to cover the Rebels for this Super Rugby Season.

    Waratahs 2024

Seems to be a fascination with Australia (bar MH) to play oversized #7s - MH himself was overlooked a few times in favour of bigger 7s. England did the same for a while (Chris Robshaw famously wore a 6.5 shirt after one game). Bar FM in the Reds, the other 7s mostly look over-sized /...

    Melbourne Rebels 2024

That is excellent news for The Rebels - might not be such great (financial) news for RA. If they get the $8m claimed to be owed from RA, then the ATO (as long as a payment plan is agreed) will be less aggressive. Still not convinced by the Rebels board as a unit going forward though.

    Melbourne Rebels 2024

If RA get done for that $8M, and with the $5M to keep the Rebels in 2024, and the $5+M for the NRL recruit, that takes them very close to topping out their drawdown.

NRL Story for those behind the paywall: ARL Commission boss Peter V’landys (the horse racing guy) has revealed his masterplan to make the NRL a $1 billion empire as the code celebrates the greatest revenue in rugby league’s 116-year history. V’landys (the horse racing guy) boldly declared the NRL has dethroned the AFL as Australia’s No. 1...

    Melbourne Rebels 2024

The Melbourne Rebels board is making a desperate bid to save the club, seeking an extra 120 days to arrange a debt deal to avoid it almost certainly going into liquidation. Rugby Australia’s legal team has been approached for the time extension, but the governing body has already signalled the...

Right got you - same report says RA have gone through $50m of their $80m drawdown (leaked info?). Not a lot of wiggle room for RA, just as NRL reveal record revenues of over $700m.

    Melbourne Rebels 2024

I guess if RA don't grant the 120 days it signals their underlying intentions? Says the ATO need to sign off also? Can't see why they would disagree if it helps get them paid?

Realistically $12+ million in debt - the directors went in with their eyes open [so that debt can be written off], and the stadium debt may be written off, but the ATO isn't going away. I am not a Rebels supporter, but I don't want to see them go - if they do go, it is edge of the precipice...
