OK - that makes sense - the 2001 (or 2002) teams had a very different (& successful !) pattern to the last 5 years ...

TheBigDog Having watched the Ashgrove teams from 1998 to 2006 (ish) I would be VERY surprised if it were the same coaches and methods now? The teams around 2002 (?) to about 2006 were VERY disciplined and structured ... something not evident to me recently .... but maybe I am wrong?

For history devotees I will reply to this one, though as per my earlier posts, all of this is third party stuff based on conversations with others ... I believe Ashgrove first approached GPS for membership back in the late 1970's. Those elderly folk like myself would remember that Ashgrove had...

While I am on a roll I will respond to this one too! ... I would very much doubt the AIC Headmasters would ask Downlands to join AIC ... it would be up to Downlands to come to the AIC and request membership. There is a lot of pride and image at stake at that level. I don't know what conditions...

I will take your word for it on the guy's name - it was an incredible kick - as good as anything you would see at ANY level of the game really ... he was a pretty neat player from memory. They were two very good teams going toe to toe though like most finals, defence was more prominent than...

    AIC Rugby 2012

Yes I was there and remember that ... though I was not sure if Eales was cpatain of Ashgrove (but I am sure you would know) ... Cannon was a wonderful schoolboy player of course and that was a very good St Laurences team ... I also remember in 1989 (I checked - as per my previous post) when...

Yes yes ... old farts like me are a dime a dozen I guess !! Got a lot more stories I could tell but have to consult my lawyers first ..

This is all second-hand and should not be relied upon in court .... but I was told .. There was a history over several years in the 1990s where smaller schools in the TAS had the numbers in the vote and kept blocking or changing things their way in TAS sport. A small group of sportsmasters...

I recall that TAS became a mess in rugby. St Laurences and Ashgrove 3rd XVs (I think?) played as 1st XVs in the Red (second division) to get more games. I don't think they appreciated other schools 1st XVs in that competition claiming "victories" over them in newsletters or in the press always...

I don't know about the Iona / Ash "bloodbath". I think Eales finished school in 1987 but not totally sure? I know Ashgrove did not win the Premiership in the year he finished and that St Laurences were champions that year. I think this is also in his book? Certainly I recall that finals did...

League was the original football code in the very early days of TAS (early 1950s). Then TAS went to rugby and then sometime in the late 70s or early 1980s they began admitting other schools until it became the two tier competition Blue (First Div) and Red (Second Div). Some schools (Ashgrove &...

Actually I think Ashgrove 06 team was not all that talented I think however they were unbeaten because they were very disciplined and just strangled other teams. The Ashgrove 05 team were very good - they had a big and very well drilled set of forwards and slick backs. They supplied the entire...

    AIC Rugby 2012

I am led to believe by someone who was involved in the beginnings of AIC that Downlands were offered a place but that the then Headmaster decided against it for whatever reason. I am not sure what approaches (if any) have been made to them since however I am pretty sure that the AIC heads would...

Best teams Last 5 years - Villa 2010 Last 10 years - Ashgrove 2005 (would have comfortably beaten Villa 2010) Since AIC began - Ashgrove 1998 (would have beaten both of the above by 20+ .... 5 Australian Schoolboys in one team)

I am surprised by the Ashgrove v Eddies result however credit where it is due and Ashgrove carried the day. I only saw Ashgrove the day they played St Laurences and from the sounds of comments on this forum they had some players out injured that day? You have to hand it to Ashgrove teams, they...

    AIC Rugby 2012

Villa v St Peters - Villa by a few, St Peters bubble to burst with a few injuries Iona v St Pats - Iona win at home by more than 10, St Pats away and the emotional drop from last week Lauries v Padua - Lauries by more than 10, Padua not much left to play for Eddies v Ashgrove - Eddies by 7 at...

    AIC Rugby 2012

Some of the posts on here re AIC selections are dreamers ... I am old and have seen this stuff for years ... if St Eds win the comp (as I expect they will) they will get the most players in AIC selections (combined I & II), if Marist & St Peters finish second they will get about the same number...

    AIC Rugby 2012

Though I am not fan of Ashgrove (as earlier posts attest!) I think that Ashgrove will have a few in AIC I .... eg the 10 (Knox?) is a good player ... I was not aware he is a half and I also heard the current Ashgrove 9 (who is VERY ordinary) is the son of one of the coaches ... bit hard to work...

    AIC Rugby 2012

Yes I will agree with that ... Ashgrove did defend tenaciously so full credit to them for that ... It is just that I am accustomed to Ashgrove teams that appear well drilled (and this side did not) and with real sting in attack (and this side did not) ..

    AIC Rugby 2012

Maybe a bit harsh however I don't know of injuries and so on, I am just calling it as I see it. I guess I am just used to seeing the Ashgrove teams from about 1997 to 2006 and most of those teams would have thrashed the Ashgrove team I saw yesterday (and St Laurences too).
