    The Israel Folau saga

Well, that just took the gold medal for intellectual dishonesty in this thread so far. Additional style points for the use of the word "perpetrator" too.

Well, you said "you only think that because people who had contrary views to yours..." so I certainly took it that you were making assumptions about me. But if I misrepresented you, I apologise. I certainly don't want to let a potential flame war get in the way of an actually pretty...

    The Israel Folau saga

And when those consequences are so harsh and so disproportionate that no one else dares to express a similarly controversial view, then freedom of speech effectively doesn't exist. I'm not going to tell anyone gay or straight how they should react to Folau's post. But just because someone...

    The Israel Folau saga

That's rubbish and a baseless slur, but I'm not going to take offence because it sort of backs up what I'm saying about the parlous state of free speech in this country. Defend a homophobe, and you must be a homophobe ... the concept that you can argue for someone's right to free speech without...

    The Israel Folau saga

And that, right there, is exactly the problem. "They have to change or otherwise it'll stagnate and die..." In a truly free society, people should be able to as the saying goes think what they like and say what they think without suffering adverse consequences. I think five years ago, not 50...

    The Israel Folau saga

Well, based on the verdict that's just come in on the Peter Ridd vs James Cook University case we might have more free speech in this country than you suppose. Thank God for that.

    The Israel Folau saga

Well, that right there is impossible to define. "Negatively impacts on others" could mean absolutely anything, and in this day and age it apparently means hurt feelings. The bar has to be set higher than merely offending someone who doesn't share someone's religious beliefs, otherwise we're...

2019 TV ratings and crowd numbers

Oh, yeah. It's the AFL's world and the other sports just live in its shadow. I think we can all agree with that.

2019 TV ratings and crowd numbers

Well, yeah. The top six is all set. Not a great deal of tension for neutral fans. Actually, I was thinking about the shape of the clubs the other day and concluded that only Glory and Victory are in really good shape. Sydney FC's lost their aura, Melbourne City are stuck with an egomaniac for...

2019 TV ratings and crowd numbers

Whatever the future holds for the A-League specifically it's inconceivable that professional soccer wouldn't exist in this country in some form or other, or that it wouldn't be broadcast. It has been quite a strange sort of season in that the top six were basically determined halfway through...

    The Israel Folau saga

Look, it does happen. Christians in Australia lost their jobs because they tweeted that they were going to vote no in the gay marriage referendum. A Christian wedding photographer in Perth told gay customers that he was a no voter so that they had the option of hiring someone else they might be...

No, no and no. Idolatry in a biblical context refers to the practice of worshiping carved or graven images of gods, which pretty much all the pagan faiths did back then. Judaism (which, of course, is the forerunner to Christianity) distinguished itself in the sense that God was never visually...

Hah, the UN is hardly Israel's biggest fan at the best of times.

A team chaplain's not a bad idea, but if you're looking to restore a bit of harmony to the Wallabies set-up I don't think Reverend GetUp!'s the answer.

    The Israel Folau saga

No, it's not. He would no doubt consider it a warning. Misguided maybe, but there's a big difference between warning people of the consequences (real or not) of their actions, and promising to bring those consequences about unless they adhere to what you believe.

Sometimes I think these people have legitimately never read Andrew Bolt - but have no problem whatsoever assuming what his views are and condemning him for those. All very nice and tolerant.
  19. Aurelius

    The Israel Folau saga

Well, it certainly sounds like he was warned so I can't blame them for taking this action. I wonder what good it'll do for the game, though. Were people really going to be driven away from the game because of Folau's social media posts? Will disaffected fans come back because RA's taking this...

Hear, hear. I thin a lot of this posturing by big companies like Qantas is either done out of opportunism or, frankly, cowardice. I don't know what it is in Qantas's case but one thing's for sure, Christians are far softer targets than oil-rich Arab oligarchs.
