Analyzing the way the game is refereed

The greatest game ever played, Sydney 2000, had a scoreline of 39-35. Australia v New Zealand. But then it had ten tries, not nine.

    Tri Nations Game 4 South Africa v Australia - Saturday 13 August 2011 - 3N2011

I read the article and then read the comments. I doubt that there would have been any comments if a G&GR moderator had been on. Nothing but abuse and illiteracy. And I thought the Herald and the Roar were poor, but they read like Dostoervsky compared to this. Its a worry.

    Tri Nations Game 4 South Africa v Australia - Saturday 13 August 2011 - 3N2011

It appears that Deans has caught Hickey's disease. This is defined in the medical journals as an infection which interferes with the body's ability to replace parts of the team that are suffering fatigue or other deficiencies with fresh players who can strengthen the team. What is the point of...

    Tri Nations Game 4 South Africa v Australia - Saturday 13 August 2011 - 3N2011

Some of the Kiwi and Saffer commentators are good but generally they are as bad as ours. There have been a lot of very good commentators in past years who have been able to comment and hide or minimise their bias. Cyril Towers was the first I heard that I really liked, though he and I both...

    Waratahs 2012

Shouldn't that be coaches? Given Bowen's inability to skills coach the backline then if we lost him that would be a major gain. If however we were to lose Foley that would be a massive loss, worse in my mind than losing Beale which I regard as the greatest disaster since the Hindenburgh...

    Waratahs 2012

This is not good news. If Hickey is still running the recruiting (how long can a season review take to do? surely not as long as a season) then maybe he'll offer the third halfback job to Phibbs. Its the sort of back-to-the-future selection he did with Anesi.

    Tri Nations Game 4 South Africa v Australia - Saturday 13 August 2011 - 3N2011

One thing we know for sure - it ain't Rolland. For mine, Barnes, Joubert and Mark Lawrence are the top three and I reckon Vinnie Munro as an outsider. [Mind you, since Mark Lawrence couldn't make the WC as anything I guess he's on Paddy's outsiders list]

Tri Nations Game 5 - Springboks vs All Blacks

Unless Fox have it wrong, there's only a six day turn around after the SA test to the test in Brisbane. If, as I suspect, Henry thinks Australia is a more dangerous opponent at this world cup than SA and wants to establish dominance going in, then he will want his strongest possible team fit...

    Waratahs 2012

On the morning that the sano man came, as kids we were kept inside the house until the outhouse was clear. The gentlemen themselves when they came around could be detected by smell from about 30 metres. As kids we found it funny, but you wouldn't want to be one. Think the portaloo Tooheys ad...

    Waratahs 2012

I thought it was Locky McCaffrey. I'm talking about his brother Miles. Gutted about losing Bennetts. I wanted him drafted in for the bench this year when we were playing Anesi so much. Hickey conservatism means we have lost a potential star.

    Waratahs 2012

Those who haven't used that sort of toilet or had any experience of the sano man cannot have any idea of what is being talked about. Even if we told you, you would not believe it. Its like being born into a world without I-phones - a reversion to the dark ages.

    Waratahs 2012

Rookies: If the Foley rumour is true and I really hope it is, then who should get the other four spots? My suggestions would be: Greg Peterson. I'd like to see him off the bench a couple of times next year to see if he can step up to Super level Lopeti Timani. I'm a great believer...

    Waratahs 2012

Now that Lachie McCaffrey has confirmed he is going to the Force for two years to hold the tackle pads for Pocock, Hodgson, Brown and McCalman the depth in the Waratah backrow looks to be non-existent. We have: Chris Alcock, a fetcher with tackling deficiencies Dave Dennis, a genuine quality...

    Tri Nations Game 4 South Africa v Australia - Saturday 13 August 2011 - 3N2011

That team we had on the partk last Saturday was not the best we have. Not to go into it in too much depth but its hard to get behind a team for this Saturday that you know is going to be less than optimal. I agree this is the match to give JOC (James O'Connor) a go at 12 (actually the game against SA at home...

    Brumbies 2012

He's a prop who is 24 or so. Given that props usually mature much later than fancy backs and are in their prime from 27-30, I would suggest that its a bit early to call. Unless of course he's Deans material, in which case he's much too old for anything but the old folks home.

    Tri Nations Game 3 New Zealand v Australia - Saturday 6 August 2011 - 3N2011

Dad's army in 2003 was not a bad outfit. This NZ team is better, I think and the winning of Bill will be difficult for anyone else. That said, if we can get our front row and back row right we've got the potential to take it away. Based on what I've seen so far, England is a chance too and SA...

    Wallabies world cup squad selection

I agree. Its not the coach's key KPI to tell the supporters what the team strategy is, its not even in the top 100. But I do expect that if I look at the on field performances over a reasonable period I will get some understanding of what we are trying to do and why we are selecting particular...

    Wallabies world cup squad selection

My post was not designed to start a Deans bitch session. I genuinely do not understand the underlying strategy, and the most perplexing part is the selection at THP and 8. Its the same thing I do when a coach does something that doesn't look right to me, I try to figure out what I don't...

    Bokke released for CC rugby

Of that list, Steyn was pretty poor (Lambie played him off the park) as was Pienaar. Aplon and Rossouw looked good, the others looked good in parts but also awful in parts. Without a huge improvement in the next two games South Africa do not look like Bill material.
