And here's some confirmation well after the fact that it is: https://www.rugbypass.com/news/the-australian-lock-that-the-hurricanes-signed-out-of-mlr-in-america/ It'll be good to see how he goes, he could be a good candidate to bring home once the cane's have put a bit of polish on his game...

    Aussie Player Exodus

He has had a pretty indifferent season as far as I'm aware, struggling to find form after injury. Hopefully the English establishment have already settled on other wingers.

Brilliant solo try from Louis Lynagh as part of a double for Quins this weekend: https://www.rugby.com.au/news/lynagh-shines-for-quins-in-europe-with-great-solo-try-2024121 Great timing for him to find some form if he is indeed planning on coming to Australia as rumoured.

There's plenty of talk of private equity so I imagine they want to get that sorted before going down that path. It does shape as a bit of a storm in a tea cup compared to the tahs (5 million) and Rebels (9 million) having much larger debts to outside entities.

Being in debt and posting a profit are not mutually exclusive. Edit: for a bit more detail it was $279,952 debt in the most recent annual report (2022), with $250,000 of that being a QLD Rural & Industry Development Authority Loan, which is a locked in low interest loan repayable over 10 years...

    Queensland Reds 2024

There was a codesport article a month or so ago about other players the NRL might be targeting after Nawaqanitawase that I think mentions him, but I haven't got a subscription so I don't know if it was because of specific conversations or just that he'd be a likely target.

    Queensland Reds 2024

I think it might actual be - it feels like there has been a big up tick in content this pre-season with a posts highlighting the individual players and a few players posting the professional photos from training as well. Petaia was also put up for media the other day (before any NRL rumours) and...

I thought Petaia did his best work when he shifted back to wing to be honest. Certainly Petaia wing and Campbell fullback feels like a better use of their talents than the other way around. It'll be interesting to see what ideas Les Kiss and Schmidt have for Petaia, it might be that there are...

    Wallaby Eligibility

I've updated this list for this years squads, mostly based of off wikipedia and all.rugby. Also removed a few foreign players who are no longer in Australia.

Yeah, I imagine it was probably a mutual decision to make sure it's locked up through the Lions series but with a chance to reassess afterwards. There's a hell of a lot to happen between now and then in Aus rugby, so I can see both parties preferring that time frame.

    It's official: https://www.rugby.com.au/news/who-is-joe-schmidt-wallabies-coach-rugby-australia-ireland-lions-2024118 Signed on a 2 year deal.

He didn't at Ireland, and he should've had more than enough exposure to us recently to know he can't just try to do the same things as New Zealand (or Ireland for that matter) here, so I think there's a pretty good chance he'll look to build out a game plan and style of play suited to what we have.

    Queensland Reds 2024

Yeah, stand down period served as of November last year. That said, I think he also qualifies for Samoa (via his mother) and possibly Fiji.

With Gilmore having been in charge of Australia A the last couple of years I imagine he's high up on the list.

That might have been the case if he was succeeding Rennie, but after Eddie I think the peacocks have already been plucked. Bigger question might be how centralisation/alignment fits in and what Schmidt is looking for there.

SMH have it too, sounds like a done deal https://www.smh.com.au/sport/rugby-union/schmidt-set-to-replace-jones-as-wallabies-coach-20240118-p5eycl.html

If the tahs change I wouldn't be surprised to see them go with a new, longer term captain, bypassing Porecki - Bell or Hanigan, maybe Foketi as an outside chance? Going from Gordon to Porecki feels like a bit more of a lateral move given they're similar ages and career stages, and I worry a bit...

Biggest question is probably whether or not Les Kiss wants to keep going with the dual captain model, it has worked well so far though, particularly with one of them injured and free to take on a lot of the media duties the last few years. I do feel like I've heard a lot of positive mentions...

Proper, full competition season launch in Auckland next month: Feels almost like a first for super rugby, I can't remember the last time the season launch was all the teams represented together at once, rather than seperate ones for each country.
