    Broadcast options for Australian Rugby

Does anyone know how the FTA A-League soccer game on Friday nights is rating? I know there are plenty of soccer people who think that FTA exposure of the A-League will send it into the next level of popularity - not unlike our thinking on rugby.

3rd tier is back in 2014 [Discontinued]

When Izzy signed with the Waratahs, there was some talk in the papers that he was not keen on being used as a marketing weapon by the NRL against AFL in western Sydney, which had led him to seek other options. If that's the case, I could believe that he was not keen on being used as a marketing...

    Wallabies have a drinking problem?

Hang on. Are we basing all this "senior Brumby" talk on a so-called tip from Grumbles? Tell me you're not.

    Artificial rugby pitches

Or you could set up the stadium up so that you roll the grass field outside between matches: (University of Phoenix stadium, Glendale, Arizona, US)

    Scotland v Australia, Murrayfield, 5am 24 Nov 2013

Link's talkin' straight this week: in this article, he says if you're an incumbent Wallaby and you decide to chase the money in Europe, you're dead to me. Dead. However, if you weren't an incumbent and leave for overseas, you'll still have a place in my heart...

    Wallabies have a drinking problem?

Adam Ashley-Cooper's mum says Wallabies star wasn't drinking excessively Wow, as if his reputation hadn't already taken a pounding this week.

Is the TMO no longer required?

Yes, I agree that the ref should have the final word, and use the TMO for advice only where possible. But the ref needs to be clear in what he asks for - either to see a big-screen replay to use for adjudication (preferred), or for the TMO to review and assess by himself. Asking the TMO to...

    Any lawyers here?

I'm no lawyer, but I would have thought there would be some agreed pay-out figure for early termination in a contract like Link's. If he was dumped (which won't happen, and shouldn't - the fact that Spiro is floating the idea only confirms that), he would pick up another job within weeks or...

    Clyde Rathbone

Daz, thanks for your perspective. When I've talked to defence personnel, I've always got the impression that beyond doing it for your mates, there's also a sense of pride in being involved in something larger - upholding the heritage of the unit? or something similar. Perhaps not patriotism in...

Australia Vs. England, Twickenham, 2nd November 2013

For a bloke who's obviously a good politician, Link forgot a key politician's tactic - upon coming to power, declare a massive, unforeseen deficit - budgetary as well as in skills, tactics, etc, that could take years to fix. This would also have had the advantage of being true. What Link is...

    Clyde Rathbone

Aahh - and here was I thinking how gracious they were. The right to citizenship by birth is captured in their Constitution, though, I think.

No automatic citizenship on birth here, HJ, I was discussing that recently with some American friends. I was a little surprised as my daughter has dual citizenship after being born in the US. Apparently not automatic in the UK either.

Is the TMO no longer required?

I've disagreed with your previous points Muttonbird, but have to agree that this example was a mess. Once Clancy asked the TMO for a decision, he should have shut up and waited for that decision. What if the TMO had said "actually, I think it was obstruction"? A mess. The on-field ref needs to...

Australia Vs. England, Twickenham, 2nd November 2013

Can you name a player who has taken less than a full season of play to get back to good form after a knee reconstruction? I don't doubt Pocock's commitment to rehab, but history shows it's a long way back.

    JOC (James O'Connor) Gooonne

Yes, it was striking that the Rebels kicked him out whilst trying to retain KB (Kurtley Beale), who had a longer list of serious issues, both external and within the team. It's got to be that he just isn't a team man, a negative influence on those he is around, even whilst his on-field form is good.

    Clyde Rathbone

I don't like what Clyde said, but in his case, I can definitely understand it. He made a tough decision in leaving SA, and has copped plenty of crap for it. I can't imagine he had a particularly good view of South African patriotism when he was standing near the sidelines in some of those tests...

Is the TMO no longer required?

Perhaps I'm just being contrary, but I also disagree with this point. I actually think it is better for the spectacle of the game, and for the accountability of the officials, for us to hear the discussion. The less we hear of the officials, the more we will be left to speculate, and that won't...

Is the TMO no longer required?

What I'm saying is that a fixed camera, usually on the half-way line, is not a good way to rule on forward passes. If the ref is happy with the pass, he should tell the TMO that, because the ref should be in a better position to rule on it. This change brings more power back to the on-field...

Is the TMO no longer required?

If close inspection is required for a forward pass, then I think the TMO/ref on big screen review should let it go. It is so hard to accurately judge a forward pass from a replay, the TMO should only penalise the most glaring examples.

Is the TMO no longer required?

Wow. That's a significant change to the Laws? How do you feel about southern hemisphere forwards first trialling the new scrum laws in test matches, then?
