Brumbies v Reds Super Rugby round 14

I didn't see any problem with Walsh tonight. Both teams were pushing the boundaries (as you'd expect in such a crucial match) and Walsh could not just ignore the infringements to try and make it a more attractive game - that is not the role of the referee. Walsh enforced the laws and the...

    Hooper vs Gill

For me it was Gill tonight but I had expected Hooper. Then watched Pocock in Force v Lions and just reaffirmed how good he is and that whilst both Gill and Hooper are good, if Pocock gets injured the Wallabies will take a bit of a hit.

    Tapuai to Melbourne?

Don't see how the Force can recruit whilst they don't have a coach signed.

Brumbies v Reds Super Rugby round 14

Hooper has been given an off field yellow card - no suspension so Gill v Hooper is on.

The light hearted history of rugby!

If you want to know more about the history of the game, I suggest a book called "A Game For Hooligans - The History Of Rugby Union" by Huw Richards. It gives you all the detail as summarised by Lee and much, much more. I learnt so much and it was a great read.

    Specialised Coaching

The sort of specialised coaching I think is valuable for club players is: Scrum technique Lineout throwing Lineout technique Half back passing Kicking These are areas where you can often find an ex-player to come down one night a month to work on with small groups of players at a time. This...

    Specialised Coaching

Coaching a team takes a big time commitment, one that a lot of people can't accomodate. It's sometimes easier to attract an ex player as a coach to work with a group of players one night a month on specialised skills e.g. halfback passing and play. That reduces the time commitment for a coach...

Rebels v Blues, Round 7 2012, AAMI Park

Really enjoyable game. Rebels defence is starting to show good signs. Scrum is a real worry though - Blake is setting up far too high and from there it's impossible for him to get low enough to compete.

    Rugby Coaching

The IRB have launched an updated coaching web site http://www.irbcoaching.com/ - I had a look at some of the content this morning and it's got some good resources - worth a look for coaching of all ages

    Backplay

RB - yes I'm a coach and I use the same running lines described here - I think they are part of most coaches play book. Is there anymore to know about running lines? Yes, we could go on for pages and pages and hours and hours. Just because it works on TV doesn't mean it will work for your...

    Backplay

Here's the Waratahs using Blocker last weekend against the Force. A2 (Barnes) and A3 (Horne) run the more aggressive lines I outlined above and it worked as Barnes gets outside his defender. If the ball had gone to him it would have been a try in the corner for the winger outside him...

    Backplay

That's a great clip and at 1.50 there's a good example of a "Blocker" with the more agressive angle I showed before and the front runner receiving the ball as A3 stays wide.

    Backplay

Depth and timing are more important in attack than any other factor. With depth and timing you can run a straight line and still beat a defender. With all the angles in the world, if you don't maintain depth and get your timing right, you're wasting your time.

    Backplay

Nothing wrong with the options you've shown but they are fairly conservative. If you're faced with the defence of a professional team this may be all you can achieve but if you're faced with an amateur team defence my experience is that you can get two defenders to follow one attacker by...

    Backplay

RB - here are some simple diagrams of the running lines (excuse the scale). First an Unders (which as you say targets the inside shoulder of defenders). If A2 runs an Unders line slightly ahead of A3, then D2 may move with A2 exposing a gap between D2 and D3 that A3 could exploit also running...

How useful or accurate are player stats

brumsfan - agree with your sentiments - here's an article I published last year on the same subject http://www.greenandgoldrugby.com/video-statistics-how-accurate-are-they/
