    Melbourne Rebels 2024

NRL Story for those behind the paywall: ARL Commission boss Peter V’landys (the horse racing guy) has revealed his masterplan to make the NRL a $1 billion empire as the code celebrates the greatest revenue in rugby league’s 116-year history. V’landys (the horse racing guy) boldly declared the NRL has dethroned the AFL as Australia’s No. 1...

    Melbourne Rebels 2024

The Melbourne Rebels board is making a desperate bid to save the club, seeking an extra 120 days to arrange a debt deal to avoid it almost certainly going into liquidation. Rugby Australia’s legal team has been approached for the time extension, but the governing body has already signalled the...

Right got you - same report says RA have gone through $50m of their $80m drawdown (leaked info?). Not a lot of wiggle room for RA, just as NRL reveal record revenues of over $700m.

I guess if RA don't grant the 120 days it signals their underlying intentions? Says the ATO need to sign off also? Can't see why they would disagree if it helps get them paid?

    In the fully paid squad?

Realistically $12+ million in debt - the directors went in with their eyes open [so that debt can be written off], and the stadium debt may be written off, but the ATO isn't going away. I am not a Rebels supporter, but I don't want to see them go - if they do go, it is edge of the precipice...

"Club Statement from CEO Wed, Dec 20, 2023, 4:22 PM https://twitter.com/Melbournerebels In response to recent negative media coverage originating out of Sydney, the Melbourne Rebels wishes to address the speculations and set the record straight. Despite the unfounded speculation circulating in...

    Waratahs 2024

Heard there are more leg injuries - to some of the Academy players, someone in the office saw the game and said the starting #8.

Phil Waugh's problem is simple incompetence - the Peter Principle, where he skipped a few steps.

    Waratahs 2024

A decent number of NSW Pathways / Academy players in that 'A' Team - many of them wouldn't get into their Club's first grade side.

    Melbourne Rebels 2024

Agreed - and the Brumbies have a talent [no pun intended] for spotting ability (especially ability that NSW refuses to acknowledge); they showed that skill recently when their U19s beat NSW U19s twice with NSW recruits. They will need more funding to achieve your suggestion, but those boys in...

    Melbourne Rebels 2024

Just listened to that interview - kept saying he wants to 'connect with the community'; wouldn't answer the Rebels alive/dead question head-on and sidestepped into sayng he hoped they have a strong 2024 season!

So RA receive $29m annually from Stan for the rights to broadcast Super Rugby, but that requires 5 Super Rugby franchises in Australia? That deal expires at the end of 2025? I tried to find out the details on the other broadcast deal thread, but got lost in all the posts to be clear. Do RA Australia need to...

    Waratahs 2024

Should be a comfortable win for Waratahs A on that basis then.

    Melbourne Rebels 2024

From the AFR: "The Rebels are still expected to compete in this year’s Super Rugby season, which starts on February 23. Rugby Australia is planning to pay the costs for this season, which could be up to $5 million." They have retained 17 High Performance Members - seems high in the first place.

Even operating with skeleton staff, and basically no income, will 2024 not just add to the Rebels debt - then PWC might advise winding the operation up? A couple of injuries to key plays could cause havoc also.

    Waratahs 2024

Be a shocker if a Shute Shield mix-up team beats them though - even if the Waratahs is full of Academy players, it won't say much for the pathways system.....fingers crossed.
