Bledisloe #1 New Zealand vs Australia, August 7 2021

Sorry to disappoint you but there's not going to be neutral referees flown in while the current quarantine situation exists in Aust and NZ Having neutral officials for sporting matches would be a long way down the list of priorities for any government at this point. New Zealand v Australia...

Agree, but alas the time to be doing this stuff was after Rio with a gold medal in our cabinet instead of playing catch-up now.

Especially when at least two members of the squad openly said that they were using the Olympic 7s as a trial for an NRL contract. https://www.smh.com.au/sport/miller-time-how-a-gold-medal-could-lead-olympian-back-to-league-20210717-p58ak9.html

    Olympic 7's

Although the same culture seems to have permeated the Wallabies with 3 players stood down for similar behaviour. Culture starts at the top and develops over time. Australian rugby has had a culture of entitlement and non-accountability from board level down for some time. If administration...

    Australian Rugby / RA

PRESS RELEASE Rugby Australia have just announced "Mission Accomplished" Two Years Ahead of Schedule. It was 2003 and the Wallabies had contested three out of the first five RWC finals, with victories in 1991 and 1999 and the game was awash with money, media coverage and a growing player...

    Shute Shield 2021

I suspect that it's difficult, if not impossible, to control where amateur players go. The only solution which I can see is for the NSWRU and/or RA step in and provide support to clubs like Parramatta and Penrith so that people have no motivation to leave.

    Shute Shield 2021

It's a major problem and one which the SS clubs in question simply can't solve on their own. At a time in history where brand recognition is everything, I'm not sure that dropping the name Parramatta for the WSTB was the right way to go. Whether we like it or not, the names that the punters -...

    Shute Shield 2021

We definitely can't compete head on, but I would simply like us to provide and decent option for all kids - particularly those who started in rugby. Nor could rugby ever have 9 pro or even semi-pro teams in Sydney, but having by having just one we effectively deal ourselves out of the game...

    Where to for Super Rugby?

I'm talking trend lines, not one off up-ticks, so 2011 is actually the perfect example.:) I think you'll find that the statistics support what I have said. As the proponents of Super Rugby have decreased in number they've become more fanatical in their support of a concept which has had its time...

    Where to for Super Rugby?

But you see Dave, these two issues are related. ARU and the RA put all their eggs in the Super Rugby basket and neglected to invest resources in fostering the grass roots. The fanatical devotion to Super Rugby in the face of declining crowds, TV audience and media coverage has made this even worse over the past...

    Shute Shield 2021

Sadly I suspect that many would see league as a better option for their ongoing development. I would imagine that more than a few of the Penrith and Parramatta kids would be either in or trying to get into the Panthers or Eels league academies. Even in the Manly area there's 2 or 3 kids who...

    Where to for Super Rugby?

I strongly doubt that a significant number of people ever travelled internationally to watch Super Rugby teams. There are a significant number of Kiwis living in Australia who historically went to Super Rugby games in the past. Strange that other sports have seen a resurgence in crowds since restrictions have...

    Where to for Super Rugby?

But is anyone other than the rusted on uber-fanatics watching what is on now? See Super Rugby crowds in the attached. https://www.austadiums.com/sport/comp/super-rugby/results The Reds and Force crowds are ok, but not much evidence of resounding support elsewhere. The poorly performing Canberra...

    Shute Shield 2021

Junior State Champ results show a good spread throughout the clubs - pity this isn't replicated in the SS 12s - Warringah 13s - Parramatta (WSTB) 14s - Penrith 15s - Manly 16s - Gordon 18s - Randwick

    Where to for Super Rugby?

They won't go for an open borders policy for 2 reasons: 1) It would dilute the distribution of their playing talent beyond the 5 NZ franchises. This would have the same impact for them as increasing the number of NZ teams. People would have noticed that in all the Super Rugby expansions over the...

    Where to for Super Rugby?

5 x Aussie teams and 10 x Kiwi teams. Top 2 Aussie teams and top 4 Kiwi into challenge series for the A Division trophy Bottom 3 Aussie teams and bottom 6 Kiwi teams into a bowl competition 1:2 ratio maintained. Assuming that people want a TT competition that is. But you see the Kiwis...

    Where to for Super Rugby?

Excellent analysis as to why a TT super rugby competition is bad for Australian rugby. Crowd numbers in NZ down by 25% from SRA to the TT version The Kiwi sides want it (TT competition) for reasons that are not necessarily conducive to the health of Australian rugby. In fact, they want it to...

As will those who were ridiculed for suggesting that SRA was a far superior competition to SRAu. ;)
