I understand New coed strategy will be similar to Barker. Overall increase in size of cohort with a modest decrease in males. The bigger risk to the rugby in the school will be the choice to not send them there at all given the change from single sex.

Short comment on the rugby and coed issue. Position will vary between schools. Tas operates in a highly competitive market for both day and boarding. Lacking big wait lists school growth has been slow with spare capacity. Girls have grown without reducing space for boys. Increased girl numbers have been critical in supporting and growing boarding part of the schools competitive advantage. It's still a boarding school. On girls and rugby, tas made the decision from the beginning that rugby should be a girls sport. That's critical. By the way, did you know that there is no where on g&g that you can discuss girls rugby?

Jim, what's the feeling around New England about the futures of NEGS and PLC. I was discussing this with a group of TAS mothers at Hunters Hill some years ago when one of them reckoned TAS going co-ed would eventually lead to the demise of one of the girls' schools. Armidale has gone from two girls' schools and one boys' school to 2.5 girls' schools and half a boys' school. Similar equations have resulted from Oakhill, Cranbrook and Newington going co-ed. I don't understand it.

Agreed - and I would add that I would be very concerned for my daughter if the only reason the school accepted her enrolment was to modify the social behaviour of the boys.

... oh and why aren't all the girls schools rushing to go co-ed?

... and whatever happened to the 30 plus years of research telling us that boys and girls learn differently and have better educational outcomes if they stick to single sex classes?

Anyway - I'll pipe down now :(

It's certainly placed pressure on plc and negs. Both schools came close to closing some years ago because of the combination of demographic and cultural change. Both fought back. They are doing so now with new approaches. My feeling is that both will survive. On tas and boys, coed has increased the number of boys at tas

I agree Joker. At Newington, not only will the pool of players shrink, but they will have to share the energy and just about everything that goes into sport and the school as a whole. There won’t be the same morale and culture for the boys 1XV, to account for this I fear we will see more ‘shopping’ to preserve this, perhaps at the cost of depth.
