The Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) ... has made the decision to cease the Men’s Sevens programme following the conclusion of the 2024/25 season.

... This announcement follows the release of the IRFU’s financial results last November, which showed a €18 million deficit for the 2023/24 season.

... As part of its ongoing efforts to manage this deficit and secure a sustainable financial future, the IRFU has been reviewing all of its programmes to identify areas for optimisation and prioritisation.

Not overly surprising given they resisted setting one up for a long time.

Regardless of that, it’s not great when a global rugby powerhouse decides to cease funding a program which is rugby affiliated.
I agree. I was just pointing out that given they came late to the party regardingv7s having resisted the move the IRFU making this move isn't too surprising.

GB should never have been a thing but Argentina losing players to XV's, unless it's temporary, is worrying.
Really doesn't seem much point keeping a Great Britain team if they don't get Olympic funding.....

"GB7s does not receive central Olympic funding, unlike many other unions it is competing with, and we believe the model the series is run under could be more financially effective for individual unions," added O'Shea.

May be they were hoping to use 7s as a spring board to contracts overseas that haven't eventuated. Coupled with the landacape in terms of competitve professional Rugby evolving in Argentina and South America allowing them to explore opportunities domestically.
