O'Neill wants ARU to consider another World Cup bid
ARU chief executive John O'Neill has urged the national governing body to seriously consider bidding for the 2023 or 2027 World Cup.
The ARU decided against bidding for the 2015 and 2019 cups, which will be hosted by England and Japan respectively, because of a financially prohibitive pound stg. 80 million ($120m) guarantee demanded by the IRB.
But O'Neill said the Australian government's financial support for FFA's unsuccessful bid to host the soccer World Cup encouraged him to think the ARU would receive similar backing.
"We considered a few years ago whether we should bid for 2015 or more particularly 2019," O'Neill said. "One of the reasons we didn't submit an expression of interest was we looked at the minimum guarantees, which were around pound stg. 80 million, required by Rugby World Cup Limited.
"The ARU board at the time didn't believe it had the financial clout to provide such a guarantee and there was no indication from federal or state governments that they would come to the party with anywhere near that sort of amount.
"Well, the reality is we were co-hosts of the World Cup in 1987. We hosted a great World Cup in 2003. "It is an event we could do extremely well."
O'Neill, who is a director of Rugby World Cup Limited, said Australia would need to start preparing a bid as early as 2014 or 2015 for a decision in 2017.
