The rebel Rugby 360 tournament has signed a broadcast deal with streaming giant YouTube in a major development that threatens rugby’s world order.

Code Sports can reveal that not only has R360 got a groundbreaking deal with YouTube, but they are partnering with former US president Barack Obama and NFL legend Peyton Manning in producing the content.

R360 organisers have partnered with Manning’s Omaha Productions, a company that collaborates with Higher Ground Productions – owned by Barack and Michelle Obama – to produce content for streaming platforms.

They’ve previously produced the hit Netflix series Quarterback, featuring NFL superstars Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow and Kirk Cousins.

They will also enter negotiations with free-to-air broadcasters in relevant countries to maximise exposure.

It's gross where this money comes from but fuck me the Saudis have done an incredible job in the sports/culture washing their image. People said it won't work, but they persisted and keep throwing more money at things and it's working.

Sports everywhere, comedy festivals, video games.

I don’t think it’s clear how this is been funded, people are speculating either Saudi Arabia or Qatar because of parallels to LIV Golf, but reportedly UK and US private capital is also another reported source.

As long as it's proper union, I don't care if we pick Wallabies from Japan or R360. To my dumb little mind I see this as a positive. Union, with a large Aus focus, is getting more funding?

Weird timing to start. So it'll be NRL players + union players outside their RWC squads?

Apparently Zac Lomax has signed.

2027 season is reportedly April - September.

So will include players from RWC squads, but if they’re not released to play TRC or July test matches then it reduces their chance they’ll be flown straight in Tier 1 RWC squads.

I dunno, I’m not sold.

it directly overlaps with all domestic rugby played on Australia, and R360 won’t have an Australian team or presence.

So not only will Australia lose players from Super Rugby but also Wallabies matches mid year inbound tours and TRC. So existing products are diluted, and the new product won’t have a presence in Australia to drive growth domestically here either. The one benefit is we might get additional R360 players for the Spring Tour?

How many Australians, outside of Indian-Australians, watch the IPL? It’s not exactly a driver of interest in cricket, yes it helps the players salaries but at least the IPL was done to align with existing cricket calendars
