Sydney Subbies 2025

And yet we used to play 18 game seasons with barely a week off and we all survived.

Well there were long weekends and wet weather weeks, but sure.

Very different landscape back then. We had 6 divisions of mostly 10 clubs each and rugby was riding high across the land.

Of course prior to 2014 money was involved so that might have been a factor for some.

I personally have no interest in an 18 game season anymore. Could just be because I've gotten older but the rigours on the body of an 18 game slugfest doesnt appeal to me like it used to. 14/15 seems like a reasonable amount and reflects on the casual, non-professional target audience of the competition as a whole. Each to their own though, and salute to the hardmen of yesteryear.

Div two tips

Briars v Forest
Forest seems to be on a little slide, they’ll bounce back this week with a close win over Briars. 24-19 Forest.

Irish v Pats
Pats put up a good fight last week, I think they will push Irish here but just fall short. 19-17 Irish

Shammies v Uni
UNSW have lost a few troops according to team sheets. Notably their 15 who has been their best all year with a nasty injury a few weeks back, will be hard without him. Any word how long he is out for? Shammies win but only just - 30-28

Each to their own. 18 games really wasn't that much, but we need to let the north shore kiddies have their ski weekends now, don't we?

I don't think money filtered down far. I'd love to see some research on the link between the move to shorter seasons and the drop in player numbers. Preseason is longer than the season now. Who wants that?

Yup. Not a fan of rugby lite.
Only concern for 18 week seasons without breaks is if you have a partner and/or family. You take say 3 Weeks of trials, 18 week season, 4 weeks of finals. there is 6 months of the year that you are gone. Working Monday to Friday. Saturday leave the house in the morning - Rugby all day. Straight to the pub after. Home at 3am. Sunday all day hungover on the couch. Leaves little time for them.

Few big match ups in Div 1 this week with Colleagues v Hunters Hill the headline. HH have been cruising so far but a trip to Woollahra against an in form Blue Giants might be the first hurdle.

Drummoyne will be looking the even the ledger against Newport as both clubs will be scrapping to take away whatever they can.

Blueys & Waverley is always a big day - if Waverley and Colleagues win it will continue to extend the top 4 lead but a Blueys win will tighten the log jam. The race to finals will be elite.

Mosman to make light work of Lindfield at Rawson.

Mosman Vs Lindfield - Mosman should win big in this one. Final score 48-12

Drummoyne vs Newport - Have Newport winning 34-17

Colleagues vs Hunters Hill - Match of the round, colleagues get up 29-28

Blue mountains vs Waverley - Hard to go past blue mountains at home 32-28

Div 5 tips:

Renegades v Epping - we've got a stack of injuries and absences which will hurt us. I think Epping are good odds to get their 2nd win over us for the year. And I don't tip against the boys often :)

Redfield v Maccabi - it'll be a good game for the most part, but once that Redfield backline breaks through it is unstoppable.

Harlequins v Raptors - Quins at home will be stronger than they were in the R3 fixture, and should be able to shut down Raptors' big ball runners. Raptors will be flying high after a good win over Valley.

Canterbury v Hawkesbury Valley - a bit of a blip last week for the river men, which I think will be ironed over at Wills on Saturday.

Newport had their chances against both Waverley and Colleagues but some heroic yellow cards killed them. Hopefully some injury returns this week will see them sneak over Drummoyne.

Big round in div 3 with every game being a matchup between two teams next to each other on the ladder.

Beecroft (1) V Hills (2) - Match of the round. Is an interesting clash of style, Hills do their fundamentals well, especially at set piece, at the breakdown and with the boot. Beecroft have a star power in the backs and look to overwhelm with their attack and some key ball running forwards. I expect it to be a close match with Beecroft having too much firepower to stop. Beecroft by 10.

Knox (3) v Hornsby (4) - Knox's close win over hills last week continued their dominance in the division over every team not name Beecroft, I expect this to continue against Hornsby's who's ladder position is flattered by a double point win against LCOI and are about to enter a stretch of games against the top teams. Knox by 17

Blacktown (6) v LCOI (5) - This may be last v second last but i don't expect it to be close. If LCOI if play similar to last week they will put a big score on Blacktown who maybe targeting this game for a win but ultimately are struggling in this division. LCOI by 25

I was wrong Petersham is the real deal. Big wake up call for UNSW. Drummoyne will be breathing easier as well after that result today.
Hills coming from the clouds to take down Beecroft will be there wake up call after some close ones.
