QLD AIC Rugby 2025

What an Exciting AIC season this year, a three-horse race until round 4 when Ashgrove blew a strong Laurie's out of the water. Then the final game, WOW I could not be more impressed by the display of rugby on Saturday, two of the strongest sides I have seen these past couple of years and what a finish. Congratulations Padua on such a strong year.

Great game at Banyo alright. The second half had everything you’d want to see.

Padua were controlled and predictably strong in the first half and the MCA boys looked a little shocked at 21-7. But they came out in the second and had clearly decided they were going to turn it up to 11, trust their handling and see if they could go around them - and they did. It was amazing to watch. Elliot Aldridge ran like a 12 all day and Liam Rice was electric, he worried every Padua supporter every time he got the ball. The hits Padua put on in the second half would have slowed any team, but MCA had clearly made up their minds and they were going to red line it to the whistle. I lost count how many times after a huge hit, both players got up and gave each other a pat. I didn’t see niggle in any of it.

MCA looked like they were breaking through when some rare ill-discipline showed in Padua - the MCA Old Boys behind the try line had their highlight of the day when they gave it to Will Ross after his yellow and walking right past their whole supporter group to get to his seat. A second ‘yellow to red’ card for referee talk back shortly after was plain stupid. From here MCA went at the fringes with everything they had. Damon Humphrys kicked over and over to keep them back and MCA seemingly ran it out every time. Their handling was incredible, and they were barely brought down or made the sideline by some of the most desperate cover defence 13 players could muster.

You’ve got to commend running rugby, but if MCA made any mistake it looked to be positional. They came up 10 metres short too many times and it just looked like they were starting too deep and giving themselves too much to do. Fair enough, they did it with ease to everyone else all season.

I think that is a little harsh. I’ve been to a couple of games this year and I see it as pure passion, coaching staff that want their boys to win so soo bad. They ride the highs and lows, and yes sometimes it can see over the top. But to say it’s disgusting would suggest you don’t understand the passion.

Secondly, I’d add as a old boy and a parent at the college currently (not involved in 1st but previously had a nephew play 1st) and who has been involved in other GPS schools, I do think the school does have a problem with the program, but it goes deeper than the people involved in the program. I’d suggest that the school doesn’t value sport as they should. A school of 1500 boys in a town surrounded and known for sport, but they don’t value it. This is not to say there aren’t certain people in the school who do. I actually think that their are some people in the school who are really do see its value, but there’s only so much one or two people in each program can do. The school almost feels more like it’s set up as a participation model rather then playing to win until they get to opens. And I do agree theirs a place in also school for “participation” teams but if you are realistic the A’s and B’s teams in all grades need to be set up to win and the school should be supporting them in every single way to do it. At the moment kids get to opens level and then realise that the goal is actually to win, and then they realise that winning is tough. And if I’m being honest these kids tap out. It’s to tough for them. Small injuries become “big” injuries. And this is nothing against the boys, because this how the schools shaped them, not by any coaches fault but by the school not treating sport with the highest regards.

I know that changes have already occurred this year in the younger age groups surrounding rugby but this will probably take 3 to 4 years to take full affect. Hopefully when these kids (my kid) reaches the opens level they will be hardened. I do have high hopes for the eddies program in the future years. I also have high hopes that eddies will finally come to their senses that sport can mean a real lot to the boys and the culture. I hope that improvements to equipment at the school improves, that the gym is improved, a new hall is rebuilt, and hopefully one day the school will play sports like rugby and soccer out of their own facilities. How good would that be!!

I also think the school is missing out on the opportunity of attracting high quality rugby players to the school with the AIC now offering Rugby League. Like has been said the school does lose players to Ipswich high because of their rugby league program. Now I’m not saying eddies could match this program they have but there is a opportunity to create a rugby league academy at the school, pair up with a NRL or QCup team like Laurie’s have done. Develop relationships that see eddies rugby league players playing at a know league club and then players from that club are going to eddies, and then have coaches from that club help out at eddies. Before you know it you have a rugby league program.term I know they have a relationship with brothers leagues, but as far as I know nothing really comes from this relationship. Now I know this is league not union, but Ipswich is a league town so instead of trying to get these kids and parents of league kids to covert to union. Attract them in with a league program and then introduce them to union. League is massive in Ipswich and eddies are losing out. Union in Ipswich is all but gone. Ipswich rangers is going down hill and don’t look like improving. The old saying if you can’t beat them join them.
100% agree sport can be a bigger focus at St Edmunds And also working with league kids instead of making them choose.

Sorry I’ll have to disagree and emphasise again the coaches act disgustingly towards the players. This is not passion. This is a bunch of simple minded adults, who from seeing their actions have very little to no rugby IQ as well. I believe things should be changing soon with word the head coach is not continuing. This will be the best change to St Edmunds rugby program.

We can only hope the coach that’s brought in has fresh and positive approach to rugby and has the ability to look at the develop of players from the younger year levels. Plus having a great connections with his team.

Did St Eddies used to be a great Rugby program, or have they just recently been down in the dumps?

Another question, has the introduction of league diminished the prestige of the rugby union comp?

Which programs are the strongest in AIC?

One of the best things about AIC compared to other comps is that the strength fluctuates frequently between all of the schools - good cohorts organically come through at varying times improving the chances of different schools winning the comp.
In answering the question about programs, again, it fluctuates a bit. My own view is that is a consequence of movement of strong head coaches and DOR's. I think that at the moment results show that at the open level, Padua and Lauries have been at the top of their game for a while and Ashgrove are back in that mix.

I ventured out to the game on the weekend, mates brother was playing Firsts. I was over near the grandstands and the coaches were over the other side. Failed to see anything ‘disgusting’ do you have any examples? At the moment it’s coming across that you have a real personal issue with the coaches. If he was that much of an issue why don’t you submit a complaint directly to the school. it’s just coming across like you hate the coaches. You must have been under a rock a couple of years ago when the same coaches took them to within 5 points of a Firsts premiership. Sounds like someone who lacks rugby IQ because they have never coached at a decent level in AIC rugby.

No personal issue with the coaches at all champ. Just their behaviour towards the players in the team. Rugby IQ might be in question if you think the coaching was the major reasons for the success you state from a couple of years ago.
Players or parents are afraid to make complaints against staff as this is usually followed with the student being victimised by a lrager number of staff. You may want to look into the schools handling of the supposed “List“ that was circulated around the school.
