South African teams are part of that comp now so will come in via that pathway.
Or not, as is the case this year!

I can't really believe the Euro/SA agreed to this. We are probably going to end up with something like 1 SA, Ireland, England and Scotland teams, 4 French teams, a Japanese team

Plus 2 Australians and 5 NZ teams!

What a tasty final week the schedulers have cooked up, only Tribe v Clan won't have an impact on the playoffs.

Brumbies v Crusaders for 2nd/3rd

Blues v Waratahs loser gets an early Mad Monday, winner gets to sweat on next result

Hurricanes already qualified v Moana who could overtake Blues (& would overtake 'tahs) if they can somehow regroup after Saturday's massacre

Reds v Drua who are gone but could relegate Reds to sixth (but no lower: even a Blues BP win & Reds non-BP loss leaves both on 28 but Reds would have seven wins v Blues' six & that's the first tie-breaker).

FWIW I'm picking a home-team sweep & a finishing order of

1. Chiefs
2. Brumbies
3. Crusaders
4. Hurricanes
5. Reds
6. Blues

sounds pretty fucking sick. Watching Ange’s Spurs got me excited for this type of stuff.

can someone tell me what the make up would be like if it was held this year?

Brumbies v Bordeaux and Crusaders v Leinster gets me going.
Good to see some enthusiasm for it. Over on Reddit the usual hand wringing featuring primarily NH posters is in effect. I know it's the internet and not a reflection of reality (most of the time) but honestly the Rugby fandom is just so negativevand depressing about anything that resembles change. It makes it so difficult to want to engage with when there's constant calls of doom and gloom.

An example is the negativity toward the Champions Cup. For years people have talked it down as being lesser than the Heineken Cup. Turns out after analysis the attendance for it sits at 18k on average (there's several clubs with stadiums 10k or less that drag that down) when compared to the HC of 14k.

Surely the top 2/3 in Japan can compete with 5-7 in Super Rugby.

I’m glad we’ll see more Super Rugby in it but I’d feel ripped off if it was the Top League. Player wise they have them although I do question the intensity.
I'm surprised the Top League are interested at all. A club world championship has nothing to do with Toshiba measuring their borrowed gaijin dick against Kobe Steels imported gaijin dick.

I not sure how comp will work, but in one way think it's pretty good if they can do it. I know some will say yeah/na, and although I not overly excited about the comp at this stage. What does excite me is the chance for rugby get good mileage out of it. I bet NRL boss will be in press rubbishing it etc, as rugby it kind of thing that reminds people what an international game rugby is etc.

I think it's great. I'm guessing given the 8 European/South African teams will come from an earlier pool stage that the world cup part will just be a straight knockout from the round of 16? Or has there been mention of a 4x4 pool stage?

From what I can see this is just first announcement, and they saying more info will come out in summer (I assume that NH summer)

The 8 NH teams will qualify via the Champions Cup pool stage.

Given there won't be an actual Champions Cup in those years it's probably more accurate to call it a qualifying pool stage for the world cup. They essentially have to qualify twice - first by finishing high enough in the domestic leagues and then through their qualifier pool.

Whereas the 7 Super Rugby teams (and 1 Japanese) get to skip any qualifier stage and go straight through to the main draw/round of 16. Nice of the Europeans to officially recognise that Super Rugby is superior and deserving of automatic seeding!

Theoretically agree, but as usual this will all be on euro timezone and any publicity we might get down here will disappear at 3am

I hope not mate, like you I agree with idea, even if I would prefer say only 4 teams from here and maybe 6 from NH comps. Just semantics really, and pleased they actually looking at something.

Certainly a very stark contrast between watching two good teams in this competition (Reds vs Hurricanes) on Friday night followed by two bad teams (Force vs Tahs).

The Force and Tahs both produce some good passages of play and some solid highlights but the periods of errors and aimlessness outshine those good moments. They're teams that can get absolutely toweled up by good teams.

The Reds vs Hurricanes was a cracking match and these are both good teams. The highs are very high and the level of play is consistently good.

The Reds are frustrating from the perspective that they are close to being a real contender but aren't quite clinical enough for long enough.

Would love to see QLD get an clear arvo game.
I was pumped for the Wallabies and Springbok game last year; 2:30pm in August..... The only thing worse than paying $200+ a ticket to watch that Wallaby performance was the overcast skies.

We didn't get a single afternoon game this year at Suncorp for the Reds. Frustrating as I've got a 2.5 and a 5 year old that'd love to go, but getting home at 10pm isn't really doable.

Inspired by the goal kicking chat in the Wallabies 2025 thread

* This year, penalty accuracy is pretty much the same as conversion accuracy for Australian teams, but higher for the rest of the comp.
* Very few penalties are being attempted - on average, the Australian teams are kicking one penalty every 2 games
* One drop goal in the comp all year
* The Reds are very accurate, but they are not recording significantly more points as a result of their superior goal kicking - not attempting shots as a tactic (and getting more tries as a result?)

For context, the 2011 Reds team had 36 conversions from 48 attempts (75%) and 46 penalties (!) at 80%

665 penalty goals in the comp in 2011 v 115 in 2025 (fewer games....but still)
