U16s - does it provide much colour two years on for Opens? With fellas developing, injuries new joiners and the year below playing in Opens as well.

The U16’s in 2023 when very few from the schools played up in opens (maybe joeys had a couple and view). The table below: View on top of both A/B’s and the rest super close except New’s B and Kings dominated U15’s.

When teams announced would be good to see where they came through the ranks! wonder if any moved from B’s or below to 1s! I am sure there are a few.View attachment 21743

Riverview appear to have a dominant 16s age group. In reality they had multiple boys from the year above come and play down in their respective age group because they were young. Can't see them being anywhere near as dominant this year...

While I admire schools that aim to put a straight yr 12 cohort in their premier team, I come from the old school of thinking which is thus.
"If you are good enough then play in the top team."
I know Joeys started to select yr 10 boys to play two decades ago and since then there have been many.
When you select yr 10 students into the senior teams that will of course leave a hole in that cohort.
Since Joeys have been uplifting under 16 players, the 16A's have not been as competitive.

#FUN FACT. Maurice Whelan played in the Joeys 1st XV for four years starting in yr 8! (High school was only 5 years then)

Whay year Joker roughly would have that been? I know Kenny Catchpole played in year 9.

The greatest Joe Boy athlete is Jim McCann
A Manly lad who almost ended up at Waverley!
Thank goodness his mother had the final say.

He won premierships in the following

Rugby. 1955, 1956, 1957 (GPS 1st XV in all those years as well)
Athletics 1955, 1956, 1957 (two schoolboy WORLD records that still stand to this day. Long jump and 4 x 100yrd relay)
Cricket 1955

A once in a lifetime athlete but as well a wonderful, humble fella.

Here is a report from 1957 of this race.

Jim McCann, the star of St Joseph's College, again stamped himself as the greatest schoolboy athlete in Australia's history. Last year he won four events (counting the relay) and set a record in each; this year he won five events and bettered three of the records. It was an amazing performance: a feat of endurance and ability that no schoolboy had ever done before, and one that it is hard to imagine happening again.

He started his epochal day with the 220 yards event. This was to be a titanic struggle with Don Bursill (S) who had been running outstanding times for this distance. The race was run into the teeth of the strong westerly. Jim hit the lead early, but against the strong wind the strong-running Don Bursill started to overhaul Jim in the final fifty yards. By sheer strength Jim managed to hold him off and break the tape about 1 yards ahead. The time of 21.8 was magnificent considering the adverse conditions.

Why is Shore so high? All there results in the trials this year have been very disappointing. A loss to Cranbrook that both Newington and View pumped.

I don't think S.C.E.G.S's results have been reflective of what we know they are capable of. Bassingthwaighte, Callaghan and Wendt all still to return, I can definitely see them being a force when fully healthy
