Queensland Reds 2025

Major Tom

Charlie Fox (21)
I know that nothing is coming from the Reds, but anyone know what is happening with Matt Gibbon? It would be really useful to have some extra troops over the next 2 weeks to help manage the Drua trip and short turnaround. Unfortunately the injury toll makes it trickier. Daugunu & Henry being fit again would help but would be really useful if 2-3 more of the injury list were close.
What has gibbon even done? Must be a niggly injury.

No. They said cramp - but it looked worse than that. Also, he’d only just come on so cramp doesn’t make any sense.

Cramp? Wouldn't he come back on? Have to say it looked to me like GB had a problem with a leg, more than cramp anyway.

Yeah - I agree. I just remember one of the commentators saying cramp. I assume it was something more serious. Let’s hope not too bad.

This is the quote from Kiss ref Daugunu & Flook

Kiss said Daugunu will miss the Reds’ next clash against the Fijian Drua in Suva but could “possibly” return against the Waratahs on May 9.
Kiss was less optimistic about Flook. “I don’t think Flooky is going to be here for the season,” Kiss said.
“At this stage, there’s a bit of work to be done with that hamstring.”

With Pakeho, Paisami, Flook, Goldsbrough and Henry all genuine centres with Daugunu able to hold that title but also be an elite Winger it's very likely that at least 1 if not 2 of them will go elsewhere. I know injuries happen so it's great to have the depth but it's also a strain to pay guys who aren't going to play.

What would peoples preferences be? I'd think Hunter and Henry are likely to look elsewhere but Daugunu will have offers flying at him you'd think.

Unpopular opinion I reckon but it's time to let Henry go. He might look good for 60mins a year but it's not worth keeping a roster spot for him.

Paisami will probably get a callup from Japan or UK soon and we probably won't match that.

Dre, Flook, Goldsbrough and Daugunu are a good core group if we can hold onto them all for a reasonable cost whilst bringing in 1 or 2 more junior squad members.

Contract status as far as I can tell............

2025 - Daugunu, Flook

2026 - Pakeho, Paisami

??? - Goldsborough (presumably on some kind of deal - academy?), Henry

I guess it all depends on price. If he can be re-signed for peanuts I think it would be negligent not to given he has size and experience, not things that grow on trees.

If he can get a decent contract elsewhere then we would all wish him well.

Pakeho is the future. Outstanding against the Blues and looks a solid build. Daungunu would be great to keep but i see both of them and Goldsborough playing best at OC. Paisami will go after the WC probably, or possibly before as the player market gets crowded after.
Henry would probably be a good fit at the Tahs as he needs a full season or two before a big overseas offer will come in.

He made his debut for the Reds 5 seasons ago and has played a handful of minutes since then. I wouldn't exactly call that experience. I'd hazard a guess that Dre Pakeho has already played more minutes than him in their Reds careers.

I think he would be better off chasing some decent coin if possible, rather than sticking around for peanuts anyway. He needs to maximise earnings ASAP with the way his body holds up.

Henry: 713min across 15 games (avg. 48min)
Pakeho: 411min across 8 games (avg. 51min)

If he's able to string a couple of good performances together at the back end of the season, I suspect the Reds will offer him another year, but can understand if either he or the Reds look to other options.

I just think for both parties it’s time to walk away.

The Reds shouldn’t risk losing one of their established guys to keep Henry and I reckon Henry for his own good should head overseas or interstate for what I imagine would be more money whilst he still can.

Doran is reporting we may see even more forced rests of Lynagh and LSL (Lukhan Salakaia-Loto) - https://www.theroar.com.au/2025/04/...aled-as-kiss-hints-at-changes-for-drua-clash/

I wonder if the Reds have given up going for top 2 and will settle for 3/4 as it'll give them a home quarter? (I'm only assuming as I haven't looked at how finals are structured I'm guess top 6 with 1/2 getting the first week off?)

But would there be more money for Henry elsewhere? I’d say the reasons why the reds wouldn’t pay him that much would apply to most other teams as well. Henry needs a good uninterrupted run without being injured before teams take the gamble (in my opinion)
