Not many post them. Some teams still produce a program at the games so that might be the best way to find out.

Wow this kid must be something really special, it can be hard for us club rugby types to keep involved with the GPS/AICS scene because games are played on same day.

I'd imagined the first couple of games he might play with Premier Colts before getting promoted to grades. Will be a baptism of fire if he does step right into the Premiers.

If you're having trouble to keep up with prospective club talent coming out of the AIC, make sure to check out our coverage of it this season in the schoolboys section. The latest game we coveref was Eddies v Pat's

I'm going to the Wests V Breakers game on Saturday and I'll endeavour to post a report when I get back on Monday. There seems to be a lack of reporting on Colts games on this site, I would have thought that there would be ample fathers out there reporting and pumping up their sons as this is the last time that it is acceptable to do this before they go into seniors LOL

I've been to a few games this year and the Bulldogs prem colts are going awful. The forwards are not too bad but the backs suck. No cohesion, I don't necessarily suggest that it is the kids fault entirely they seem to lack direction, anyway that's only an opinion from the sideline and is not a criticism of the coaches. I don't envy coaching them, a group of testosterone filled young boys that all think they know better is hard to coach I've been there and it's no picnic.

Seems that most of these boys are first time out of school and are feeling their way and they seem to make a few wrong decisions after the ball gets past the flyhalf. This year will be a learning curve for them and if they stick it out they will be all the better for it next season and towards the end of this season.

The side lacks a couple of big lumpy players in the forwards but although they have some decent forwards and they don't have that much size across the park but they try hard all match. There is no lack of wanting to do better but they have real trouble putting it together. Looks to be what it is, a side that is new to each other and new to working as a team.

Hang in there coaches there is light at the end of the tunnel, you never know this might be the start of the resurgence of Wests as a premiership side it happens every 7 - 10 years if you look back in time.
70s, 80s, 90s, 2005, Wests have lulls then highs it happens this way, they only have to get a nucleus of a young side together with a coach that believes in them and it will happen. I know I've been there since 1970 and watched them get beaten by cricket scores and then a couple of years later win the premiership then drop way down again.

So here is hoping that history will repeat itself and we are on a roll and this is the start of the next tilt at the premiership in two to three years. From little acorns big oaks grow

The issue with Wests is there's no depth. I'm not talking about quality here, more quantity. They forfeited Colts 1 on the weekend. If you can't field a Colts 1 team your chances of playing finals is very low. There are always exceptions, Souths last year. Wests needs to field 3 colts teams and their results will improve.

Where do Wests draw most of there players? A lot of guys from that side of town must end up playing for Brothers or UQ.

UQ pillages the wests juniors. its a self fulfilling prophecy really kids plat wests till 17 and here uni have better under 19s so head over there. Naturally if everyman and his dog go its going to be better than the place their leaving.

over the last few years west have struggled to get 2nd year colts. 2010 being the exception, however the premier grade was so bad that year that every half decent colt played up.

things will turn around i have no doubt they just need to keep that nucleus of lads for next year

Don't know if I completely agree with that. Uni put a lot of effort into recruiting colts to the clubs (all colts not just the top level). They go visit schools and junior clubs to tell them what they are all about so boys can make their mind up where they want to play footy the following year.

Uni have to do this because with the exception of the connection to Kenmore (which is growing really well) and to a lesser extent Taylor Bridge they don't have a junior club. 2007 was the last year Uni didn't go out and actively recruit from schools and they didn't field a colts 2 and came last or second last in Prem colts.

Since then Uni have been extremely strong in colts across all grades fielding 4 teams.
Gps usually pump out 4 teams as well. Wests sits right in the middle of those 2 clubs so its not a shortage of player numbers in the area which is leading to poor participation.

Do you think that maybe Qld Uni should copy Sydney Uni and start a junior club, i.e UQ Junior Rugby?

Briefly looked into it a few years ago but fell at the first hurdle as the UNI (not the rugby club) didn't have any available field space for them to train or play on. But with kenmore there is no real need anyway. UQ players go down and run training sessions are very involved with the club across all age groups. Wheather that helps the kenmore boys come down for colts training in future years who knows

Well I was at the Wests V Breakers Game and Wests went down again I think the score was 23 - 3 and although Wests peppered the line in the second half they were unable to convert pressure into points.

The Breakers had some handy players the number 6 was OK and they had some speed out wide that they capitalised on.

But I will concentrate on Wests, Again the forwards did well and were on a par with the opposition. Actually the 7 for Wests had an outstanding game he tackled well and made some good metre in attack. Likewise the 1 and 3 and 4 were really good for Wests. The Wests 9 was the dominate HB in the game but while he gave ball on a plate to the backs they were time and again caught behind the gainline.

Its not that the 10 12 and 13 were bad players, the 13 deserves a medal each time he got the ball he was monstered behind the gainline.

A couple of problems that I saw in the backline play was that the 10 was standing too deep and when he received good ball from the HB his first steps were to run on a 45 degree angle then he passed to the inside centre who did the same then the ball was shoveled out to the poor 13 who got smashed. This went on during the entire match it didn't change during the match.

There was no variation in backline play it just went out along the backline and was so predictable, Breakers defense just slide across and smashed Wests every time.

The backline must use some variation and the 12 must straighten the ball to try to give some variety.
I think that the coaches must come to the conclusion that if it's not working in the back line why not play to your strengths in the forwards. Anyway just a thought.

Another point the Wests HB does the kick off and does it very well with short kicks that have really good hang time, perfect to contest ball but Wests do not run up and contest the ball they wait until the opposition has the ball then tackle them or wait until they make a mistake. With quality hang time ball there is real opportunity to contest the kick off but Wests don't do this.

At one point in the second half Wests had possession through good play and penalties awarded that they had at least 6 plays at the Breakers line from set piece around 10 - 15 metre out and went to the backs every time and never looked like scoring. If that doesn't tell you something nothing will.

Mind you the Breakers played well they had good defence and tackled very well.

Overall a disappointing day for Wests the coaches must be tearing their hair out with frustration. The players are not that bad it's just that they lack confidence and they are so predictable in attack.

Roll on next week and we hope to see some improvement.

I agree wests back aren't performing, with the 10 consistently passing to the 12/13 for crash balls every time. I saw their game against sunnybank and their back 3 had to do so much defense with their 15 making many try saving tackles that if not made the score would have been a lot more

I'll be going to Wests V Sunny Coast at the Kennel and hoping for a good result in both Prem Colts and Seniors. I'll try and report on both next week to stimulate some discussion

A while ago in the seventies a young aboriginal boy named Ella stood up flat in the line to receive the pass from the HB and from then the style of playing attacking rugby changed. Prior to this Fly halves stood deep and attacked from deep within the field of play. In the modern game standing deep is used when the set piece is in action like the line out where the attacking line must be 10 metres from the gain line. Almost all other times the fly half stands flattish or within 2 - 3 metres from the gain line and the backline uses fast hands to get the ball to the outside backs. This type of play allows for switch moves, unders and overs and deceptive running of lines.

I watched the game Wests V SC and even though the HB had a shocker in the first half, and didn't play all that well (he improved in the second half to be back to his best) he was under pressure all the time to to throw a pass that was 15 + metres wide and 12 + metres deep to get to the flyhalf who was positioned to receive the pass. Consequently the backs were constantly being smashed 5 - 6 metres behind the gainline. This has happened in every game that I have been present and hasn't changed. The forwards also attack the line in singles and do not form pods this allows the defending side to get over the ball before our boys can clean out resulting in turnovers.

These are just some of the obstacles resulting in Wests being behind the eightball in this competition. Sunny Coast boys did all the things that Wests didn't do and subsequently won the game.

Sadly this was one of the sides worst performances this season I would hope that some lessons can be learnt from this game and in the subsequent games the boys can improve. Otherwise it will be a long long season

I know these Wests players are mostly first time colts players but they must learn the basic principles of the game to at least be competitive in a match. Nearly all of them them would have at least played rugby at school and have learned these basics so it is mystifying why they are not using these principles now.

I feel very sorry for them and their coaches it must be hard to swallow being beaten each week and their confidence must be at an all time low.

After last saturday I have new found confidence that Wests Prem Colts will win a game before the seasons out.

I care not about the score on the weekend but I was pleased with the way the Wests prem colts fought out the game.

Even though they were outgunned there was a new found sense of grit to their game.

Their captain who has been the HB, flyhalf, fullback, and now switched to inside centre to fill the gap, gave the team a lot of toughness in the backline that they had not had before. The flyhalf had a good game before he went off injured.

And although Wests had players out in vital positions because of Uni exams they all put their hand up to be counted.

Special mention of the TH James Stewart he held the front row in the set piece and played the house down around the park. I look forward to seeing him in Senior ranks next year so too the Captain of the team both these boys go to seniors next season.

The game was as expected with Wests holding Brothers for the most part until they ran out of numbers and Brothers made the extra man. Lot of work by the 6 Ben Hynes for Brothers, he looks to be a star in the making.

Brothers are a well drilled side and look to be the finalists for this season.

Responding to the request of The Oldest Rat, i have signed up and am a first time poster, so here goes! Seen most of the prem colts teams go und this year, so was surprised to see Norths topple Easts. In saying that they have some good ball running forwards that spark up close to the try line. Brothers are the team to beat for sure, no 10 (P James?) is a star of the future with a big left boot and plenty of composure and the Souths side is well drilled and hooker (feleti?) was a standout when I watched them. Uni can never seem to get the same team on the field consistently, with 3 or 4 being taken to fill injury holes in Prems, which makes them a bit hot and cold. No 10 (dalgleish) looks the goods, but Scott Gale isn't anywhere near his best this season. I will try to comment weekly.

The Oldest Rat hard to see Wests get a win while they can't seem to score points. Teams need to score around 20 points in a game to be in with a chance and the Bulldogs average just over 6 points a game so far. It would be interesting to see how they would fair with Green playing for them as I expect he would have a big impact at this level. Not going to happen though.

As I've mentioned before it is hard to win Premier Colts games without a large number of Colts players. I see Wests Colts 1 couldn't field a team on the weekend for the second time this season. They need to push for 3 colts teams next year if they want to rise up the ranks.

Thanks guys for your input and welcome Tight loose for your first post.

In answer to Jets post I agree with your assertion that you need to score points to gain a win. The team has forgone easy penalties shots to concentrate on tries. Sadly they do not have the firepower to get over the line. By this I mean that they do not have the numbers of good players to get over the line. They have a few very good players but not enough to sustain pressure on the opposition.

And you are right you need a lot more players for a base to start with. I believe that the Pres Tony Buckley has an urgent agenda to remedy this problem and hopefully we will see a lift in numbers next season.

Plans are in place to recruit numbers during the off season. I think that the message at Wests is that to strive for good competitive colts teams is the basis for a good solid club performance all around.

Lets hope that the plans that are in motion achieve some pleasing results.

For me this year it has been quite evident who has put the off season work into colts. Getting the right Coaching Team is key, coaches who are going to, 1. Put in all the work identifying and recruiting players and
2. Follow up by running a good rugby program and setting up a good culture. Teams that have clearly done this are Uni, Brothers, Souths and Sunnybank, who are seeing success in not only their top teams but down to colts 2. I have watched most teams play this year but the aforementioned teams were very professional outfits, from their attire on game days to their warm ups and the way they play their football. Particularly Uni and Brothers. Oldest rat I think for Wests to revive their colts they need to start with getting the right coaches who kids are going to want to play for.
