Wallabies vs Fiji RWC’07 player ratings

To be honest, Saturday’s was the kind of scrappy effort that left me uninspired when it comes to writing player ratings. So instead, I’ve shamelessly ripped off the anonymous ones syndicated by AAP and stuck on my own thoughts in green. Feel free to take a shot or defend them if they’re yours…

Wallabies player rating from the 55-12 Rugby World Cup pool win over Fiji at Stade de la Mosson:-

CHRIS LATHAM 7.5. Excellent kicking and attacking game. Set up a couple of tries but was also greedy and cost Tuqiri a try. Oooh, poor Lote.

DREW MITCHELL 7. Scored a try hat-trick but was lucky to be awarded one after dropping ball. Still making odd errors. Agreed on the errors. Good gas though – is it enough?.

ADAM ASHLEY-COOPER 7. Solid game in both attack and defence. Always gets over advantage line. Crossed for nice try.

MATT GITEAU 8. Undoubted man of the match. Scored 27 points, two tries and set up two others. Also looked good in cameo at five-eighth.

LOTE TUQIRI 7. Another clean sheet for the hungry winger who was denied four possible tries by the referee and teammates. This must be the Lote fan-club. No-one wants to admit it but the guy’s been a shadow of his former self all season.

BERRICK BARNES 7. More pluses than minuses, including an excellent kicking game and a sweet 32m drop goal. Yeah. Is 7 the default score?

GEORGE GREGAN 5.5. An unhappy match for the veteran halfback who equalled Englishman Will Carling’s Test captaincy record. Obviously not a member of the Gregan fan club. Worst Wallaby on the park? Not sure about that.

WYCLIFF PALU 7.5. Played a barnstorming first half but also let himself down by pushing passes and playing too loose. ‘Barnstorming’ = 7.5?

PHIL WAUGH 6.5. A difficult game to get into and couldn’t take his one and only chance to unseat George Smith. Unfortunate but right for Phil. Smith just too good.

ROCKY ELSOM 7. Was tireless again, bobbing up in times of trouble to save the day as well as break the line.

MARK CHISHOLM 6. Tried hard but things didn’t fall his way. Had the fumbles early. Has the fumbles permanently.

DAN VICKERMAN 7.5. Never plays a bad game. Commanding in the lineouts. Agreed, although shoulder holding him back in the loose?

GUY SHEPHERDSON 6.5. Scrum went well against weak pack but struggled to make an impact. Not sure I’ve ever seen him do much in the loose, but wouldn’t care if the scrum was steady.

STEPHEN MOORE 7. Set-piece work commendable and was busy around the ground. And gets a default 7? What about his 100% throwing?

MATT DUNNING 7.5. Backed up John Connolly’s mid-week rating he was “world-class” with another fine all-round game. Eh? How does packing against Fiji prove ‘world class’? The guy’s good in the loose but I’ll save the ‘world class’ stuff until the business end.
