Super 14 2008. Brumbies vs Cheetahs, score & review

Brumbies 29 – Cheetahs 23

Laurie Fisher might not feel quite so happy about it, but the loss of just about every skerrick of experience from the Brumbies backline this year through retirement and injury, is probably one of the best things that could have happened for the distant future of ACT and Australian rugby.

By the end of this game there were two 18 year olds straight out of high school on the park for the home team as they racked up a bonus point win today. When Gerrard left the field with a pulled hammy, there must have been 20 S14 caps between the whole backline. Sure, they make naive mistakes all over the shop that experienced teams will crucify, but the raw pace and dynamism that they show on the ball probably even shades that of the more structured Western Force.

With Mortlock, Ashley-Cooper and Fairbanks all injured, and the inside centre role for the Wallabies a problem, its fascinating to see the fast feet of George Smiths younger brother Tyrone and the dynamic running of Afeaki making holes in defences.

This ability to break the line eventually won through for the Brumbies today. However, the line-out was a shambles and scrum rickety. Also disappointing was the reticence or inability to finish moves. Countless times the baby brumbies would make a break in open space for an outside back like Playford or Fainifo to get chased down. If a winger can’t put these opportunities away, who can?

And oh yeah, when is Steve Walsh going to realise that the game isn’t about him?
