That is hogwash @Inside Shoulder. It is not life after School you are thinking about. It is the prospect of seeing the last school fees invoice that you, and the rest of the parents of the Class of 2016, are thinking about. That is a Life after School worth thinking about.
As always, for many 2016 rep and 1st XV players, next year will be a dose of cruel reality. They will be playing with and against lads a year or two older and more hardened in that time. The older players will have the benefit of an extra year or two of gym work also - applied to an older body. The crowd on the sidelines watching the games will be numbered in the 10's not many 100's, and the likes of the front oval at Rat Park, Latham Park, St Johns College Oval, Keirle Park beckon.
The step from Schoolboy rugby to Colts sorts some schoolboy stars out. The Rock Stars will also discover that some of their contemporaries will be late developers in their Colts years and that some of these will catch up or even pass them in the pecking order.
Until the NSW Schoolboy Association Rep players are named, it can be a little difficult seeing which of them are already in the 2016 Colts Machine playing either a full season, or a moonlighting role when there was no school footy on. While some may change, it is fairly likely that the 2016 Colts Schoolboy players would be registering with the same club in 2017.
The Clipboards will be working their magic at the various JRU and Schools representative tournaments, and the Usual Suspects in Syderney and BrisVegas will be close to locking in a few rockstars for 2017. With a more defined post school Pathway to Gold, via the Junior Gold Cup at U15 and U17, National Schoolboys at U18, Super U20 Championship, and most NRC Franchises running development academies of the like things are looking good for this cohort and their rugby future.
Do forum members have definite information on which clubs the Class of 2016 1st XV and Schoolboy rep players will be going to?
It may also be useful to use this thread to record the movement of boys leaving Heavensgame and choosing to play Fivekick.
The rumoured demise of the Under 20 Carmakers Cup in 2016 failed to eventuate, but times are a changing over on the Dark Side. Will this impact on the numbers crossing to the Dark Side?
Please try to limit the maybes or rumours particularly those with where you name specific players, because these forums are widely read, and inaccurate reporting or rumour mongering can be harmful on a number of levels.
In the meantime, good luck to the Class of 2016 with their final few months of their school journey and their examinations. Enjoy your Rugby but work hard on your plan B. Remember that there are only about 150 professional contracted players in Australian Super Rugby.
The rookie salary in Super Rugby is about $80k, with very few on “big packages” like Israel Folau, Matt Giteau or Quade Cooper. The average professional sporting career across all professional sports worldwide is less than 4 years, and at every moment you are a Patella Tendon injury away from being yesterday's hero.
A trade or professional qualification is for life, and there are plenty of 50-60 year old plumbers, doctors, lawyers, teachers, physiotherapists, scientists, electricians, accountants and IT workers around that have been on packages of >$80k for most of their working lives.
