Clive Woodward and Rassie Erasmus played tests and won a Rugby World Cup as coach so they must be right near the top of the list.

Scott Robertson was capped 22 times for the All Blacks and has won Super Rugby twice as a coach so that certainly puts him up there.

Brad Thorn and Stephen Larkham both fit the description as players but neither have made it that far as a coach yet.

Surely the greatest coach to grace this country? The man from Melbourne, Ewen McKenzie. Over 50 caps for the Wallabies, then coached the best attacking team super rugby has ever seen. About to coach the Wallabies to a RWC win then cut down before his glory.*

*only slight notes of hyperbole.

He would make the list as a RWC winner and Super Rugby winner. Agreed that he could have done more as a coach before everything imploded. Doesn't seem likely he will ever coach at a high level again.

So what is Ewen doing these days? I know he wanted to drop off the radar after 2014, but has he re-surfaced anywhere?

Remember vaguely someone posting on here that he's in business doing something with the Snowy Hydro Scheme. Could have misremembered though.

EDIT: seems I have, confused my ACT energy plans.
Former Wallabies coach Ewen McKenzie has launched a new project that he says will take 90 per cent of the rubbish sent to Mugga Lane and burn much of it to generate electricity.

The $200 million factory would be built at Ipswich Street in Fyshwick, backing on to the railway line, allowing Capital Recycling Solutions, for which Mr McKenzie is project director, to export recyclables and import extra rubbish by rail.

Watching the Waratahs A vs Rebels A. The centre paring of Moeroa and Walton seems very well balanced compared to Hunt/Newsome.

It may be a season or two too early for Walton, but we may see Moeroa before seasons end.

Walton shows a lot of promise and there was a real hunger in his game. He made a few too many errors which is probably holding him back.

Moeroa shows a lot of potential. He's still in that stage where you can see he's having to think a little too much and is a little off on his decision making. He also lacks a little cohesion. A number of times I felt he was prime for an offload or link play. I think he looks good at this level but against say a good Super Rugby team I think they would exploit some of his weaknesses where it all needs to come instinctively.

It depends what you mean by the term "coach".
Jones had more than enough rugby smarts to guide Manly to a grand final and victory over the Mark Ella-led Randwick juggernaut in 1983.
He also knew that at the international level he needed more technical expertise and therefore recruited Alec Evans.
Jones created strategies and tactics that Evans and the players put into detailed practice.
That's coaching.
It's the same in 2020. A Head Coach and numerous specialist coaches for all senior teams means the coach has to strategise and coordinate. That's coaching. Jones was extremely successful at it.

I feel like you boys need a new thread about coaches.

With regards to Tahs I'm interested to find out how bad Simmons and Gordons injuries are. I think Hanigan might be needed sooner than later.

Ok, my quick thoughts from the Waratah A's game;


Scrum looked good. Shape was a little scrappy. LO functioned well. Maul setup needs work (actually maul work in general needs to improve). Lots of field possession but more errors than you’d like. A little disjointed at times.


- Moreroa solid in defence. Some really good hits. Couple of poor passes. Ran a nice line to score. Keeps looking better but still not the finished product for me.

- Harris still looking good. Some nice defence. I think he will be a good future prospect. Hope he gets a run this season.

- McDonald took some good options but a couple of really poor passes. Be interesting if he will get a run with Gordon's injury.

- Walton ran some good lines. Seemed to picked up an injury/strain but was able to continue. He's starting to impress me. Made less errors this game.

- Mason some nice little kick passes. Goal kicking generally good (besides his last). Was solid without being exceptional.

- Tafa some nice carries and meters made. Not as dominate as some of the previous games. 

- Donaldson some nice runs to space in wide channels. Kicked his goal kick.

- Tizzano continues to look good. I really rate this lad. I think he's going to be a really solid future player.

- Lisala looking promising. Lost ball in contact but looked good ball in hand with some space. Probably wasn't brought into the game as much as he could have been.



Rebels offside a lot which killed any momentum. Lots of scrums. Honestly they never really looked like scoring. I'd be concerned about their squad depth. On the positive some of their defensive work was good.



I continue to be impressed with this initiative. The boys need the run, great opportunity to develop up 'n coming referees and for the coaches to evaluate how their players are really progressing.

A lot of the Rebels squad are crocked, too many actually, but that’s a separate issue. Only 5 of the named 25 are actually in the Rebels. edit 6 actually, all forwards

Fair enough. I'm not as familiar with the Rebels extended squad to know who is truely in or out atm. If as many players are crocked then depth really is a concern this year. I'm aware Tuttle, Tupou and Hodge are injured. I assume Jones and Potter mustn't be right. Who else is missing atm?

Still a good chance for those clubland players.

I found Rob Penney's comments about clarity of message and language interesting in the post Lions game press conference. Interesting thing to think about for all the budding coaches around the importance of things not always being interrupted how you believe they should and the need for a common language across the squad.

I'm enjoying some of the honesty and little tibits we get from Penney vs. Gibbson.

This game v the Chiefs has really shown what an utter failure of recruitment the off-season was. How much money was freed up by losing Ashley-Cooper, Phipps, Rona, Foley, Kepu and Latu? Where did that money go? It's not enough to have three teenagers who are talented *for their age*.
Right now we have a bad team that's poorly coached.

A lot of the possible talent was locked up in other clubs by the time Penney got ahold of the reigns so it was a bit of a case of plugging the shortcomings this season and blooding the youth.


I disagree about the coaching. The players have to own their performances. I think for the squad they have, their style of play with the offloads and fast interplay is a reasonable one. The forwards need to have the right attitude up front to help set the platform.
