Or… Rugby Australia think Schmidt is some Coach God that just HAS to be retained at any cost. I agree, the Head coach should be the man and not have to go running to GOD to see if he agrees. Schmidt has been great, don’t get me wrong, but he’s either in or out in my opinion.

RA frankly came across as desperate in the final stages of the Schmidt saga.

Every media outlet was reporting that Schmidt had decided to leave, but I believe Waugh was still coming out to say they were still negotiating and hopefully he would stay. I think everyone on this forum was in agreement that it was time to just let him go and make the formal announcement.

In fairness there is definitely a human element to this as RA had just come out of their most toxic coaching relationship and finally had some element of success and stability. I can understand why they wanted to really push to keep JS but they’ve also likely overplayed their hand.

No. I'd imagine Les would be enthused, hope so. I'm simply focussed on the Reds. If anywhere else in the world was trying to break into the Kiss contract and end it early, I'd imagine your thoughts might generally be more aligned with my own here. RA are responsible for the situation, and it will inevitably leave the Reds worse off.

I will preface this by saying I was a big fan of McKenzie, and took no joy from his leaving, and I think his record would heave been decent had he stayed. But his win % was 50%.
I think he would have been better with time.
I am guessing though, as is anyone else in this regard.
We have sucked since McQueen.

I believe Dru's "we" was in reference to the Reds and the struggle to get a really good head coach in after Link went to the Wallabies, not what happened at the Wallabies afterwards.

I mean, describing the Reds as "working hard" to get a good HC, when they picked the chairman's best mate for a while, then didn't make a decision with a dual role for a year, then make a decision for a couple of years, only to the pick the under 20 coach because he was cheap, and then get Kiss out of pure luck because his previous employer ceased to exist......

Mate, it’s the wallabies. That is ultimately more important than how the Reds perform, and I’m a Reds man! If Les is picked and he takes the wallabies forward then so be it.

Anything around that mark is pretty respectable.

Look at the best coaches in the NRL currently and its Bellamy at 70%, Robinson 60%, Bennett 60%, Cleary 55%

Only takes 1 or 2 rough seasons to drag it down drastically but if they can get it to work for 1, 2 and go at 80% in those years and win a trophy you're' then a legend and do wonders for the sport overall. The % means a lot less than the trophy cabinet IMO.

The flip-side is coaches rarely last for a long time, particularly out of country. They probably should've been planning for this transition for some time, even without a dip in form they were at increasing risk of losing O'Gara to an international job. But I'm not going to throw too many stones about poor future planning form an Australian rugby built glass house.

This is a non-sequitur. RA are not trying to break into Kiss' contract to end it early. All these coaches have clauses in their contracts that they can end the contract early if they get an offer to be head coach of the national team. Depending on the contract and location it may extend beyond their own nation's national team.

There's no negotiation required by the new employer in this case. If Kiss was trying to be poached by another team (and wanted to leave for that role) then the QRU would be able to block it or only allow for the contract to end on the basis of receiving a payout.
