If Palu isn't available for the first test I wouldn't be opposed to this combination:-
4. Horwill
5. Timani
6. MMM
7. Gill/Hooper/Smith
8. Mowen

Big physical pack and having MMM and Mowen in the backrow makes up for Timani's limitations at scrum time.
I thought one of Timani's strengths seemed to be his scrummaging. He seems to be used less at line outs, although has been taking a few lately so he obviously can do it. Mobility around the park seems to be a problem.

MMM is such a good option as a LH lock as he is still a massive man, and therefore beneficial to the scrum. He is great in the air, does the tight stuff, and allows another flanker in the mix for mobility.

Yeah, but for how long?

You could say the same about Horwill, Cooper, McMeniman, Palmer, Lealiifano and Tapuai.

All of them have proven to be injury prone to various degrees in recent years.

The reality for players like Palu is that if he is fit at the right time and strings together three or four solid games before the squad is chosen he's very likely to play number 8 in the first Lions test.

You could..... But you'd be drawing a fairly long bow. I don't know enough about Palmer to comment on him but with the exception of MMM the rest have had one long term injury in the last year. MMM used to be injury prone but seems to be not so much these days.

Different to Palu in that he seems to be lucky to string together more than a few games without some 'niggle' ruling him out for 1-3 weeks.

You can't avoid or plan for a broken leg, busted knee, broken collar bone or hammy being torn off the bone, but if you're selecting a guy like Palu in your squad for the Lions series, then you must consider the likelihood that he may miss a game or two. If this isn't something the selectors are worried about then that's fine but it's a likely disruption and must be considered.

Not going to repeat what Scoey said because he's exactly on point.

I'd also like to add that Palu is only in that kind of position because of the fact that he is the only person in Australia (as far as anybody knows) who actually fits what you want from an international 8 and has also played a test match before. Has anyone ever thought of trying MMM at 8? I need to watch a lot more of his game film so I don't know if he has the explosive pace but he definitely has the size and the aggression. Either way, having a line-bender who isn't a chronic injury risk would be pretty nice.

But MMM has been a chronic injury risk in the past, hasnt he?

He definitely was, and I've been trying to find out some info on how he went at Kubota but it's hard to come by. Looking at this year in isolation, the old MMM of 5 years ago would've pulled lame already this year. He seems to have turned a corner in terms of his body holding up. Touch wood.

Let's not talk about picking players to play out of position in any Test match, let alone in the most important series for years and years.

Form is temporary, class is permanent.

Sorry I should have worded my last sentence better. Meant for that to refer to both Palu/MMM, not just Palu as it sounds.

It was a thought experiment - not a call to select him at 8 for the Lions tour.

Dennis is an interesting choice for flyhalf?

Still, not as silly as seeing Folau on the wing...

Slim, Slim Slim.

Quade was named after Dennis Quaid.

Yes. Fullback and wing are radically different o_O . Israel will line up against the Lions, and I would say their is a fair chance it will be on the wing.
