Wallabies 2023

Sir Arthur Higgins

Dick Tooth (41)
Is Scott sio a possibility?
I would probably go frost and Skelton w Phillip on the bench. Arnold and rodda options.
I think a mcreight or
Hooper should start when opposition calls for it which is rarer these days otherwise come off the bench when legs are more tired.
I would have Samu Valetini, leota, gleeson and Halloway as main options for back row.
Samu a great 7 option to start with more bulk alongside him amongst those mentioned above.
Where is foketi again?
I think 6-2 bench is always a bad decision .

I was listening to some old music late last night, TISM. Cheering, warming, post debacle pick-me-up. You know, like "Life Kills". A line has stuck with me for some reason...
"It's about time that a rock band spoke
as a matter of fact they ARE a joke".

It's nice to watch some rugger but the quality gap between WB v Puma to AB v Bokke was immense. The RC is becoming as irrelevant as the Kiwi games in Super. Mostly unwatchable to a fan with buy-in to the fortunes of an Aussie team. The season doesn't allow it, but I would love to see us play second tier teams (and beyond Pacifica) prior to hitting the first tier. Or at least Argentina, Wales, Italy as well as Fiji etc. Something to allow some kind of build.

IMO we have missed the best chance to re-develop the pro game around a domestic comp - we would have gone backwards, sure. We are here anyway, aren't we? Honestly, the current system of Super does nothing to improve Australian rugby quality.

Upside: We are blessed with a wildly fortunate RWC draw. Add 1 game where everyone lifts and pulls it together and perhaps the QF beckons. Long straw though.

The systems are all wrong. The Wallabies are not equipped to play the game Eddie had England firing with initially. Our defensive system is obviously not working. We were exposed out wide again. Starting Skelton and Arnold gives you two massive, but slow, locks. Team one with Philip or Swain and keep one on the bench. Our kicking is also not up to scratch. Our discipline is even worse than last year, if thats possible.
Kellaway should replace Wright and maybe bring Fines onto the bench as our second half. At least have him in the squad.
Kerevi looks some way off his best but will get better. Ikitau is a huge loss(hope he is ok) and really exposed the 6-2 bench. We dont need one for a while. Flook is a good option at 13.
We really are not very good right now but are playing a style that will not bring results. Back to the drawing board for EJ (Eddie Jones).

It's hard to say what systems are and aren't working when the Wallabies aren't able to have any field position and ball in that position.

Not sure Eddie will swing the axe BUT the talks will be eviscerating, throwing his headpiece after the stupid shove by Valetini will bring a heap of unwanted criticism onto his head. When are we going to just play footy and forget the stupidity? Wright must be replaced by Kellaway and his future role is winger ONLY.
I know you all fell about laughing at the Tate and Gordon suggestion and even MarkyMark could end up in the centres. After last night, maybe you ain't laughing so hard?

Well, that should tell us something?
It's our bloody breakdown work! If we don't compete, are too slow to react to a player making a 5m drive upfield, {like Skelton did} and we lose the ball then 'lose the breakdown lose the game' becomes a lot more than a work-on.
BobbyV was less than his best, Holloway almost invisible, McRight tried hard on his own. Skelton went well, Arnold good enough. AAA had a good game but Poreki and Slipper were average. Bell looked very good in the tight and loose when he came on. Hope he can start against the ABs. Another game where we just tossed it away through poor discipline.

We've had different coaches with relatively the same players playing with different "systems" with the same common themes.

Are the patterns/systems or lack thereof shit because of the coach, or, are they non existent because individuals made poor decisions which caused those systems to be stressed too often?

Mark isn’t playing in the centres- it remains a senile suggestion.

And your reply is a juvenile reply. Where he ends up either centre or fullback, you don't have a clue. The idea remains valid that a guy like him with his size, speed and strength will not be an outside centre is well within reason. If he ends up playing there you will just be a part of the cheer/jeer squad. Your ability to ID talent is no better than seeing whats at the end of your nose.

Why do you always have to start insulting people who disagree with you?

Mark's defensive efforts last night were a pretty big indication of why he shouldn't be considered in the centres at the moment. We have exisiting and strong centre options who would should use before we start trying to mould a square peg to fit through a round hole.

It’s the individuals.

You can’t deny that between Jones, Cheika and Rennie they haven’t had world class coaching. Reality is the cattle just isn’t at the correct standard.
Physically they are OK. They are missing the basics of playing the game, as they are poorly taught at schools and clubs, therefore they must return to them before anything else.
In 2024, whoever is W coach along with all the Super Rugby coaches need to take all our players back to basics in the pre-season. They must learn how to pass, catch and tackle. Then they need to learn how to win the breakdown, which to attack and which to let go, how to pilfer, counter ruck effectively The finer bits can be done only after they have totally mastered the basics. There should also be a cull of those who can't master these basic skills.
I suggest for the passing, catching and tackling we bring in a good league coach as they are better at those basics than we are.

I agree that the latter part of your post is a discussion. But a reply that suggests it's a senile suggestion is that a disagreement or the start of an argument?

I'm not convinced of this. Our game plan led to 200 tackles v their 80. Minimal possession, again. When the team is in defensive mode 2 1/2 times more than the opposition, the first line of defence is going to be found out more than it would otherwise. That puts more issues in the hands of the back three. It is multiplying the problems.

Mostly Nawaqanitawase defence looked good to me, and key issue where it wasn't, well there was mostly more things going on. Mark has 8 tackles to Wright's 2 and Koroibete's 1. He was working hard enough in comparison, noting the risk of issues when he was working (in this case) 4 or 8 times harder is just obviously higher. Overall he had a reasonable game I thought. I also expect him to build from here.
