Wallabies 2021

The Nomad

Bob Davidson (42)
That group of players has been the source of a lot of optimism judging by the comments here Nomad.

But they haven’t really had much impact as yet. It is actually the guys who are 1-3 yrs older than that group who are really shining at the moment. Guys like Tupou, Swain, Rodda, Swinton, Valetini, Leota,Paisami, Ikitau etc. And most of those guys were Super Rugby squad members and not much more two years ago, with the only exceptions being Rodda & Tupou.

Bell & Petaia from that age group are in the current squad and Wilson, McReight, Lolesio & Lonergan x 2 have all had some valuable exposure but aren’t cracking our best side at present.

The big take out I have from that is that it is really still 2-3 years away from when we should be expecting those guys to be really hitting their straps. On top of the 4 guys above this group includes guys like Hosea, Walton, Harrison, Donaldson Harris, Tizzano, Nawaqanitwase, Reilly and then guys like Gordon, Nonggorr and Flook who are a bit younger again. Of course they won’t all make Wallabies but it’s a refreshing change to think of some of the talent coming through that are getting the time and opportunity to develop properly (hopefully).
Yeah didn't mean they are Wallaby ready , but the pathways are producing the talent, which is cause for optimism.

Of this year's Junior Wallabies squad Nonggorr, Flook , Thomas and Grealy have got time for the Reds; Gordon and Vaihu for the Rebels; Pasitoa and Tom Hooper for the Brumbies. That's nearly the whole backline with Super Rugby experience, just one winger short, could throw Lukas Ripley's name in who ended the year with a Rebels' contract and is only 19 years of age.

As you mentioned Tizzano, Harris, Walton and Angus Bell are only one year older, as are Rory Scott and Luke Reimer who have also played Super Rugby.

Then you get into the Class of 2019 that have had plenty said about them already.

When you factor in the current coaching team , there's lots to be optimistic about.:)

I also have a theory that Japan want their players to have the international reputation, isn’t it all about prestige over there? McMahon is a great
player for his Japanese provincial club but now he is a great player for Australia, so much shinier.
Yeah I think the corporate ownership produces very different organizational goals to the collection of rich private owners you see in France (and England to a lessor extent).

Just having a chuckle after reading an article on ROAR, talking about Louis Lynagh and calling him Aussie Louis even in jest, and asking if Rennie has given up on him? An Italian kid who learnt his rugby in England etc, at least will stop references to England, Scotland etc being poachers you would think.;):)

His dad is Michael, that makes Louis Australian. To be clear, I'm happy for Dan Carter's kid to be called a Kiwi under the same circumstances.

Ok, but why is he not Italian, his mother is Italian and that where he is born. I just find it amusing he is Aussie after not being born here, not having Australian mother, and not living here. I don't have a problem at all if he plays for Wallabies, none at all, but I suggesting it pretty hard to call other countries poachers if we don't apply it to all. Has he even got an Aussie passport? I doubt it. We certainly can't say Eddie Jones is poaching him or anything.

Not sure where this is coming from, no one is calling a country a poacher for picking a player that has been in their system his whole career. Likewise no one is calling a country a poacher for picking up the son of one of their all time greats. No one is even saying he's not Italian.

I think it's pretty clear that he is English, Australian and Italian and all three of those countries have a legitimate claim to him at this point, it's just up to him to decide which one he wants to represent for his career.

Edit: Just on the passport I'd think it's most likely he has an Australian passport along with an English one. For the majority of his life the Italian passport would have conferred no extra benefits while the Australian one would have.

Just killing time with no rugby mate, and not in anyway calling anyone a poacher, just pointing out kind of pointing out we need to stop calling other countries poachers is all.

Though between you and me I have actually posted here I think you should only be able to play for where you reside or born, not where parents, grandparents etc were born. (That is only a personal belief of mine and have posted it often)

Louis is fair game for England...a case of really who caps him first and his preference but yeh we can't claim England poaching here and well within their right to cap him if Louis wants to play for England. A matter of RA / Rennie presenting him the option to play for Australia as obviously eligible for Australia, England and Italy. Poor old Italy of course have no chance and would only have a chance if not deemed good enough to play for England or Australia. Nice position for Louis to be in though to have 3 different countries could play for.

See in NZ John Kirwans son has been picked to play soccer for All Whites (actually one of things that made me notice what I read in ROAR), and this case real similar, he was born in Italy, lives there etc , I actually think NZ soccer has poached him, I not into where parents or grandparents come from, just my personal thing it's where you live or born for me. But all is good not in anyway disparaging RA or NZS for talking of doing the same as what rest are doing.

Can't believe football superpowers like NZ are allowed to bully minnows like Italy and poach their finest talent.

The down side of overseas players

Luckily back row is a position we have stacks of depth in. No specialist 7 cover at all though.

Edit: we have plenty of theoretical depth. Just checked and without McMahon theres only 5 backrowers competing for 4 positions. Oops.

If it's only the Japan game he's out for we'll get by, Samu is adequate coverage there. If it's longer they'll probably fly McReight in.
