Wallabies 2020

Up the Guts

Koroibete will start at 11. 14 really seems to be firming to Wright vs Daugunu which I’m very happy about as I had them down as having the most potential at the start of the season and they are realising it. I’m content with either at this stage, looking forward to their clash in Reds vs Brumbies.

It’s just so good to see Wright playing so well, so quickly.

I must admit when he signed I didn’t know him, but his story & highlights from Joey got me very interested.

Shows how good he is, that he is already at the top of our game in 12 months.

I like that Wright has some ball skills + is on the wing. Think we have too much of a tendency to try and move anyone who can catch and pass further in field.
Adds a lot in the wider channels

Wright was impressive last night, showed the full range of skills. His running is electric, great footwork, has a passing game and even showed a long boot on a couple of occasions to.

First things first, we need to see Wright in the 33 man squad. For all the 'newbies', to be honest I don't expect them to get a HUGE amount of game time in the 4 game Bledisloe series. I would expect to see them get their runs in the RC.

Hk: Fainga'a, Uelese, BPA
Prop: Sio, Slipper, Ala'alatoa, Thor + (HJH (Harry Johnson-Holmes) or Faamausili)
Lock: Simmons, Philip, Blyth, LSL (Lukhan Salakaia-Loto)
BR: Swinton, Valetini, Wilson, Naisarani, Wright, Hoops, Samu
HB: White, Powell, Mcdermott
FH: Lolesio, To'omua
C: JOC (James O'Connor), Hodge, TK, Petaia
OB: Banks, DHP, Wright, Daugunu, Koroibete

Note- Would expect to see 1 more centre in the squad most likely at a BR's expense.

Simone has been going really well for the Brums. I was impressed with his all round game last night, particularly his kicking. Would be an option as an additional centre, for mine would be in front of Hodge.

After losing players like Kerevi, Folau and Genia (in his prime), our backline has been solid unexciting. DHP & Hodge aren't game changers.

But it looks like we have some serious x-factor potential on the horizon. I know they won't all work out but it's exciting to think about. Our backline at RWC23 could be:

9. McDermott
10. Harrison/Lolesio
11. Koroibete
12. Kerevi
13. Petaia
14. Vunivalu (I think he's eligible as of 2021, moved to Melbourne in 2016)
15. Sua'ali'i
23. Maddocks/Kellaway/Wright/Daugunu

All of a sudden with the emerging players coming through, the rumoured 800k for Vunivalu doesn't seem like money well spent.

I'm quietly shocked to see anyone suggesting O'Connor for higher honours this season. All I can recall since lockdown is him fluffing his lines, ballsing up regulation clearance kicks and throwing intercept passes. He's dreadful. I'd pick Godwin, Simone, or almost anyone else ahead of him.

I think Prior's name should be in the mix for HB's....

I’d definitely have Simone in my squad at the moment.

I think Harrison is a terrific prospect, but I think the last two weeks have shown he needs more time in senior rugby to be considered a Wallaby candidate.

With Lolesio injured, I don't think Harrison can be left out. The only other contender is To'omua, and he's a stopgap at best, so somebody young and promising needs to be on the bench.

Can see Simone making the squad to give more cover at 12. Would be instead of Swinton who has really only put together one dominant performance.

Maybe a long shot but on form last night and in preseason Keunzle will overtake the other young contenders by the end of SRAu.

^ Hard to believe not long ago we were moaning about lack of talented 10's coming through Noah and Harrison on the way and now BK showing potential...early days for BK but he did well in his first run on game.

He’s one of the most talented backs we have, defends well, has a good kicking game and has passed the last or second last pass on a good number of the Reds tries plus sparked a good number of breaks. He’s not in career best form but I’d be astounded if he isn’t in the squad and pretty surprised if he isn’t in the 23. Personally I’d have him at 12 (despite the form of Simone) with To'omua at 10. I would still have him as an option at 10 simply because I think we need an experienced head there and give the young guys a bit longer to get up to the standard required.

Gee Andrew Kellaway's stocks have dropped. He was killing it pre-Covid but hasn't been a factor since. Many were picking him in their Wallaby squads at least, but it's hard to make a case for him at the moment. He's been leapfrogged for sure by Wright
