The big event was the debut in Top 14 rugby of Jonny Wilkinson for Toulon against Link McKenzie's visiting Stade dF team. He scored 17 points and it was good to see him looking fit and playing fit. He almost lived up to the sickening hype of the Pom commentator, except for a couple of missed shots at goal, a dropped bomb and a beginner's dropping of a pass when he looked up. Welcome back son.

Apart from Wilko,Toulon have signed up a host of new international players including Contepomi, who will be missed by Leinster and scrummie Mignoni, who had a top game before he had to go off. They looked a lot sharper outfit than in 2008/9 even though their best player last season, JvN, didn't play, and nor did SBW or Contepomi.

SdF looked piss poor. JMH, one of the great players in world rugby, has gone to play for the Sharks (in the Super 14, not the GP) and Beauxis, their other flyhalf option last season, had to be rested as the match was within the 8 weeks rest period that the touring French players had to have after the test against Oz. Instead they tried midfielder Liebenberg who played with the panache of a statue.

But in the 2nd half when new SdF signing Dupuy came on at scrummie and Oelschig moved out one to 10, things started to zing. Why Dupuy, poached from Leicester, was allowed to play despite being named on the bench against Oz less than 8 weeks ago, is a mystery. Maybe he didn't get on the park in Sydney. Gasnier played well at 12, though he got little ball from his flyhalf. Amnesia victim Bastareaud came on in the second half and he will remember getting booed when he came on. He is still awaiting a decision on his ban from international rugby.

The score? 22-22 which is not a bad result for Link's side. He's going to have a good team when everybody is available. They will have a good choice of backrowers this year from Leguizamon, Parisse, Taylor, Rabadan, Mauro Bergamasco and Haskell. They have 38 players in their roster and will probably need all of them since they have to play 26 rounds before thinking about finals, internationals and the HC.

Paris have second team now that Racing-Metro is promoted from the ProD2 division. Albi is also back after being demoted because of financial irregularities 2 years ago, but they had to win a playoff game in May (by just 2 points) to do so. Dax and Mont de Marsan are relegated. The promoted teams played each other in the first round and RMParis won away, 13-19, in a a dreary match. The visitors were fortunate that the Albi goal kicker didn't had a good day, but it was a good result for them. They played newcomers French skipper Nallet and Rasputin Chabal. Later Francois Steyn will join them.

Talking of financial matters: just before kick off in the Bourgoin v Clermont game the Top 14 watchdogs advised that they had frozen the licences of 14 new Bourgoin signings. Nor will the club be able to play them until they can prove that they can finance their reported €10.2m budget for the season. Despite this disruption Bourgoin went close but the class of 10 James and Rougerie was too much for them in the 2nd half when Clermont ran in 3 tries in 7 minutes. The visitors won 28-37 with 4 tries. Winger Nalaga, who has been the top try scorer in the Top 14 comp in the last two seasons scored two of them and they were both set up by Rougerie (playing outside centre!!)

****

Top 14 champions Perpignan haven't signed anybody of note. They won 28-20 against Bayonne, who were after Lote Tuqiri, but it was a close run thing.

In another close one Toulouse just got home against Montauban 17-16 on the bell after Puma lock Albacete scored in the corner and Elissalde kicked a clutch conversion. It wasn't all good news for Toulouse as coach Noves gambled on the fitness of flyhalf Michalak, who lasted only 20 minutes before aggravating a thigh injury. The coach blamed the FRU for ruling that his international players had to have 8 weeks rest. Sure Skrela was injured but which of tourists Heymans, Clerc, Fritz, Dusautoir and and Millo-Chlusky would he have played at 10 instead of Michalak? He also blamed the heat.

****

At the other end of the scale Brive smacked Montpelier 30-9. Brive opened their chequebooks to sign up Flutey and Noone this year and they already had Steve Thompson and Andy Goode.

****

Biarritz had a crap 2008/9 season and it looks like another one as Castres, who are no great shakes, beat them playing away. 12-24.

Re: Top 14 starts off

If those are the highlights, I'd hate to see the lowlights. It was league with extra kicking. Rugby needs to take a look at itself.

Round 2
Players and coaches wll be hoping for cooler conditions this weekend as there were temperatures of 37 temperatures during the day at some venues in Rd.1. Toulouse scrummie Elissalde asked a good question as to why games were scheduled at 4pm during a heat wave and 9pm on frozen grounds last December. After his game Chabal said it was weather for the beach. Good points.

Bayonne v SF
On Friday night Stade Français are away to Bayonne who have elected to hold the game just over the border in Spain. They have a big Basque following on both sides of the border and are hoping for a big crowd in the San Sebastien stadium, just 50 Kms away, as it holds more that their home ground. This is the first time that a Top 14 game has been held outside of France, but it won't be the only one this season: Bayonne will play another Basque team, Biarritz, at the same place in Rd.6, and SF are having a home game in Brussels.

Link MacKenzie will have some of his French and Italian internationals back this week for SF now that their 8 week compulsory rest period is over. 3 Marconnet, 10 Beauxis and 7 Mauro Bergamasco will be particularly welcome and their return could make his SF team slight favourites. Bastareaud may get a start in the midfield and that may be at the expense of Gasnier.

Bayonne will have Gower, another rested Italy international, back playing 10 and backrower Rémy Martin plays also. They will have to kick for goal better than last week when scrummie Garcia missed 4 out 6 shots. It 's a hangover from last year when they kicked goals at only 53% and missed out on HC qualification on points and against.

This could be the best game of the round.

Biarritz vs Albi

Biarritz suffered a shock loss at home to Castres in Rd. 1 but should bounce back against visiting Albi. Traille will be available for the home team this week but they will still be without stars Yachvili and Harinordoquy.

Clermont vs Montauban

Clermont Auvergne were impressive in Rd.1 when they got going; so their star-studded team should be too strong for visitors Mountabaun, even though Mountabaun were the only team to beat them at home last season. But Clermont already have a big crock list including Bonnaire, Joubert, Baby and Malzieu. New signing scrummie Morgan Parra will probably get his first run for the club.

Mountauban have roster problems of another kind. I reported that Burgoin had 14 licences blocked by the Top14 bean counters and now we know that 7 Montauban licences have been blocked also, because of budgetary deficits. Consequently their roster is stretched thin.

Montpellier vs Perpignan
Montpellier will welcome the return of their captain, flanker Ouedraogo, and they will need all the help they can get. They suffered the biggest loss of Rd 1 last week: 30-9, at Brive, and have troubles up front in set pieces and otherwise.

Perpignan, the Top 14 champs, were off colour winning a game in Rd 1 they could have lost, but it's only a short trip for them and the tight knit team should have too many name players for the home team.

Toulouse vs Brive
Although Brive were the only team to win a try bonus points last week they will not be favoured to beat Toulouse playing away. The home team were no great shakes in Rd. 1, winning away by only one point in the heat, but they haven't lost a home game since April 2008. Flyhalf Michalak is still in doubt for Toulouse with a hamstring problem, but on the other hand: Brive's first pick 10 Andy Goode is still not fit to get on the park.

Toulon vs Racing-Métro 92

Toulon, who could get only a draw at home last week against under strength SF, host the second Paris team, newly promoted Racing Metro, who got up the over new team, Albi, in Rd.1. Both sides will want to score a few more tries.

Toulon's best player last season, Joe van Niekerk, will be back on the park and Henjak is likely to start the game pairing with Wilkinson, just as they finished last week when Mignoni was injured. SBW is still crocked. Toulon should win the battle of the cheque books

Burgoin v Castres

Castres had the most impressive win last week, over Biarritz, and will be favoured to beat embattled Bourgoin, who still have 12 (of 14 originally) unavailable because of Top 14 intervention. But Bourgoin beat Castres twice last year; so watch this space.

During the week there has been more talk about a merger next season between financially troubled Bourgoin and 2nd division Lyon. Both outfits seem to be in favour of the move, and a decision should be made by the end of the month.

Aussie centre Gasnier sparks Stade's first win
(AFP) – 1 day ago

PARIS — Australian centre Mark Gasnier scored two tries as French giants Stade Francais, who had seen some of their squad laid low by swine flu during the week, clinched their first win of the new season on Saturday.

Defending champions Perpignan ended former European champions Toulouse's perfect start while debt-ridden Bourgoin, whose players have agreed to take pay cuts in order to help keep the team afloat, edged Biarritz to move off the foot of the Top 14 table.

Gasnier struck in the 22nd and and 79th minutes as Stade, who were level 13-13 at the break, ran away to beat Montpellier 43-26 with Italian centre Mirco Bergamasco and backrow forward Pascal Pape also scoring.

"Happily, a match lasts 80 minutes," said Stade's Australian coach Ewen McKenzie, who admitted his side are still looking for their right rhythm.

"We conceded 26 points which is not good but scored 43 which is very good. We can score five tries but can lose the ball five times with the final pass.

"We take risks, we like to play with the ball. But you can't play all the time. I'm looking for the right blend."

Toulouse, the 2008 French title winners, were knocked off top spot in a 17-15 defeat at champions Perpignan, for whom centre Maxime Mermoz scored the game's only try in the 63rd minute.

Toulouse are a point behind Clermont, who lead the Top 14 despite being held to a dour 9-9 draw at Brive on Friday.

French international Clement Poitrenaud then added to Toulouse's misery when it was revealed he had suffered a suspected fracture of his left hand in the 33rd minute.

Toulon moved into third spot with a 15-9 win at Albi with England fly-half Jonny Wilkinson kicking five penalties.

Bourgoin, with debts of around two million euros, saw off Biarritz 22-17, a day after players and coaches agreed to accept pay cuts of between 15 and 18 percent in exchange for a desperately-needed cash injection of 700,000 euros from former president Gaston Maulin.

Victory was only assured in the last 10 minutes, however, thanks to a penalty and drop goal from fly-half Benjamin Boyet who kicked 17 points in total.

Racing-Metro picked up their second win of the season, a 18-9 win over Bayonne after trailing 9-6 at the break.

Former All Blacks fly-half Andrew Mehrtens kicked three penalties for the Paris side.

The match between Montauban and Castres was postponed on Friday as six players with Castres were also diagnosed with swine flu.
