Just looking through super fantasy stats again and was wondering why Gill has been selected over Smith for the second time in a row when Smith looks to have had the better game against a tougher team? Some stats I retrieved from fantasy super rugby are listed below. I don't have any stats for turnovers forced but I saw Gill get 2-3 against the Force and I think Smith got a couple for the Brumbies. Smith must have had a massive number of offloads against the Sharks as well. I realise Gill had a fine game but Smith showed some amazing diversity in his play against the Sharks.

Gill
Runs 5 for 24 m
Tackles 11
TB 0
Line Breaks 0

Smith
Runs 11 for 61 m
Tackles 19
Tackle Busts 5
Line Breaks 0

Does anyone know of any other decent stat web sites?

A side topic, but it would be really good to get some advanced statistics on rugby so that we had more data who performed best in the most important circumstances and whose actions impacted points scored or defended most.

Paradox - for the poll we as a rule try and choose the best player from each team (in itself subjective) to put to the vote, as each team plays in a completely different context to the others e.g. Gill played in a team that struggled, Smith played in a four try romp.

I don't believe you can judge players by statistics alone - they are only the quantitative side of judging a player but you also need to look at the qualitative side as well.

Wouldn't higher metres per run totals and tackle busts fulfill that?

Wouldn't higher metres per run totals and tackle busts fulfill that?

Consider this scenario (which is a common one) - Player #1 makes no tackle bust or offload but takes the ball to the line, draws in two defenders and puts Player #2 into a hole with a pass just prior to contact - Player #2 doesn't have to change direction to get into that hole.

One of the defenders tries to change direction to tackle Player #2 but only gets an arm out and his tackle is busted. Player #2 runs 25 metres down field unopposed, then gets to the fullback, ignores his support runner and is tackled over the touch line.

Player #1 gets the following stats: 1 run (depending on who is keeping the stats) and 1 pass. Player #2 gets the following stats: 1 run, 1 tackle bust, 1 line break and 25 m run.

The stats say Player #2 did so much better than Player #1 but look at that from a qualitative basis and I'd say the opposite. Given Player #2 only had to catch the ball and run unopposed but blew the opportunity for the team, I'd rate Player #1 as having had the better impact (on a qualitative basis) than Player #2.

That is the problem with stats - they tell some part of the picture but not all.

You're in serious danger of hitting Queensland levels of preciousness here, Paradox.

I don't think my question was precious. I made a point and backed it up with the info I had. Dumbs, rescind that personal attack. ;)

One also needs to be objective and not subjective. Stats at less provide some measure of objectivity.

Appreciate all your work btw.

Paradox, buddy I'm with you.first 70 minutes back after 1 1/2 weeks of training Smith carved them up, pulled off some huge hits, and some great pilfers. Next full game did much the same in an over all dominant team.

Can't wait for brumbies v reds - I think a very fine young 7 is going to go to school and benefit from a master. Smith is a freak and it is great having him back in Australian rugby.

Whether he is picked in the Wobs to play the Lions or not, I think he would bring far more to the squad if he was involved than Dingo does as a coach.

Dave, he can't be picked fpr Wallabies, he is a contracted Japanese players, so unless ARU gets Japanese club to release him.....

Dan, don't forget Eddie Jones has a great deal of respect for G Smith and I'd be surprised if George was asked a few strings would be pulled. Lets wait and see, and whilst waiting enjoy his skills

Gags, the Sharks are a better opposition than the Force though and the Brums were away from home. I've also heard the argument on this board that it's easy to shine in a beaten up team (and thus the reason Chris Latham was Oz Super Rugby player of the year all those times when the Reds were in a rut).

Paul Cully clearly reads my work and it looks as though I was doing Smith a disservice. 23 tackles, 5 offloads, 43 rucks, 17 passes. More offload than Gill or Hooper made passes.

I fail to see where Gill was better than Smith.

No one has said Gill was better than Smith.

The decision was that Gill was the best Reds player last weekend and Auelua was the best Brumbies player.

In the team of the week it was decided that Smith was the best overall 7 for the round.

Couldn't have said it better.

As it happens I agree with you Paradox which is why Smith got 7 in team of the week.

If we don't do it the way bravheart spells out though it's a pain in the arse. You effectively8 have to rank the top 20 odd aussie player performances across different positions and different matches even before it gets to a vote
