Only gets 6 weeks. Bit of a joke really as this is vicious.

I think the TJ (Nigel Owens) pulled a Bryce Lawrence by saying it was a penalty.

From a replay I saw it appears the touchie didn't see it properly and though it was simply a shoulder charge and suggest only a penalty. I can't imagine any official would let that go with anything less than a red if they saw it properly.

How bizarre that he even did that when it was easier to try & put on a legal big hit.

Back in the day when I did my refs course as an adult, the instrutor said 'any trip is a gutless case of cowardice and should be penalised accordingly' meaning immediate red card and ensuing suspension.
That is one of if not the worst case of gutless cowardice I have ever seen on a rugby field and one year would not have been sufficient for mine.

Any official claiming they didn't "see" that properly is not fit to officiate. Between 3 of them surely 1 had a view, if none did then they're all looking in the wrong place. He winds up with the leg and follows through - perhaps he was attempting a drop goal out of the Frenchie's hands?
How that can not be red carded is beyond me. There can be no possible mitigating circumstance in what Flannery was trying to do. 6 weeks is a mockery.

I have the impression that the level of nasty violence emanating from Ireland is starting to match that from France?

It's an interesting one. Quinlan of Munster and Jennings of Leinster have been recently served long suspensions for eye gouging.

Flannery was suspended in 2008 for 8 weeks for stamping a French player. This was eventually reduced to 4.

Aff the Hayes face stomping earlier this year.

The Irish seem to misunderstand trhe "tough guy" concept

6 weeks is a joke for that. 12 at least.

I'm with RW on this one - 12 months minimum. I hope the three officials were raked over the coals for missing that one as well (hopefully stood down from officiating tests in the coming weeks as well).

I remember a French chap (Dominici?) tripping one of the Poms in RWC2003 SF2. Yellow card immediately, no questions asked. The above looks similar but a complete dead-leg attempt.

That was no where near as bad, and it got yellow. Surely O'Brien would have contemplated red had it not been a RWC Semi.

Don't know what was going on with Flannery, surely should have been more then 6 weeks. At least 10 weeks, disgraceful.
