Timana best back? Anyone know how many games he actually started?

HSBC Waratahs No.8 Wycliff Palu has won the Matthew Burke Cup for the second straight year after being voted the NSW players' player of the 2009 Super 14.

Palu received the award from Matthew Burke at the team's annual presentation in Sydney last night.

It is the first time any player has won the award twice since its inception in 2004.

Palu started the season on the bench against the Hurricanes after recovering from shoulder surgery in the off-season. He then went on to poll votes in 11 of the 13 matches throughout the course of the year, receiving the highest number of votes against the Brumbies in round five and against the Sharks in the penultimate match of the season.

Palu finished on 210 votes ahead of Phil Waugh on 177, the NSW skipper picking up the Best Forward award for the second straight year in addition to the same honour in 2005 and the inaugural Matthew Burke Cup in 2004.

Forwards filled the top five spots in polling, with Timana Tahu's form at the back end of the season driving the second-year centre to the Best Back award.

Lachie Turner polled the most votes in a single match with 53 against the Stormers, in a game which saw 15 of the 21 players who took the field receive votes.

Tahu was the only other player to notch 50 votes in a game which he polled against the Cheetahs in the opening match of the South African tour.

Prop Benn Robinson - who finished third overall - was the only player other than Palu to top the voting in more than one match, receiving the highest number of votes against Chiefs in round two and the Crusaders in round six.

Will Caldwell capped his best season to date by finishing fourth overall, receiving the most number of votes against the Bulls in round nine, and was one of only two players - along with Waugh - to receive votes in every match of the season. It capped a great year for Caldwell in which he also became the most capped NSW lock of all-time.

Each player in the 22-man match day squad submitted votes on a 3-2-1 basis after each round to determine the overall result.

It's what I've been saying all along. The Tahs don't know what they're fucking talking about.

1st Wycliff Palu - interesting, but fair enough
2nd Phil Waugh - fair enough
3rd Benn Robinson - thought he may have won, but fair enough
4th Will Caldwell - hey another forward, fair enough
5th Tatafu Polota-Nau - and another forward
6th Timana Tahu (Best Back) - played off the bench 6 times, started 7
7th Sam Norton-Knight - ended season on the bench, 2 reserve runs, 10 starters
8th Luke Burgess - was benched twice, started 11
9th Lachie Turner - solid
10th Daniel Halangahu - started on the bench, 5 reserve runs, 7 starts.

But a big ups for the Tah forwards who were the ones who were really meant to struggle this year without Vickerman, Elsom, Dunning, Kepu and Lyons. Well deserved recognition.

They got the top 5 right but I would have swapped the positions of Palu and Robinson. It's good that Ducker Caldwell got mentioned.

Hard to say who was the best back but I would have never picked Tahu and (sorry Scarfie) SNK 2nd.

Tahu lost too much ball including going to ground and trying to give a miracle pass, an as for SNK: I though he was down on confidence this year. When he came of the bench against the Lions just about the first thing he did was to challenge the line in traffic instead of passing. As soon as I saw that I knew he would find his tackler beautifully and probably lose the ball - and I was right both times.

It was typical.

To be fair: he's a good long range kicker including being pretty good with his "other" foot - and is pretty good taking advantage of open play situations both in running and setting up players backing up, with long passes if needs be. He's a bit too straight up and down for my tastes - like a fast bowler who can't swing the ball.

Good that Hangers got a few votes despite starting the season on the bench. He's signed on for another year; so I hope that the combination with Beale at 12 can continue next year.

I thought Norto was superb in the first half of the year and clearly the Tahs best back. Didnt finish the season as well as he would have liked but given the lack of consistent performances from the other backs Im not surprised he is in the top 2.

Think it was great Caldwell featured and I really hope he challenges for a Wallaby spot, especially if Horwill doesnt return to form soon. He has probably racked up more minutes in the last two seasons than MMM and Heenan did in their careers.... combined.

Player votes always throw up some interesting results. Im actually pleased to see Tahu get votes which suggests he has been accepted into the group. Caldwell and Waugh obviously had a deal to vote for each other in every game or simply voted for themselves.
