Sydney Subbies 2025

Speaking to a young chap on the weekend who is trialling with Gordon Colts. He said there were 150 trialling which surely cant be right but lets assume he is right. That represents is a spare second division subbies club on top of the 3 teams, plus reserves that they need for SS colts alone. When I ask why he wasn't considering one of the div 1 subbies clubs, his response was - I'll go to subbies when I play grade - which I thought was interesting. Perhaps SS colts culture is appealing to a youngster, but jeez its starving subbies of players.
The challenge is for the subbies clubs to make colts appealing.
Gordon run a good program. Been there to see those numbers in previous years and you’ll find a few academy / 1st xv guys bolstering numbers.

Div 1 - ANZAC Day. Ideal for Lindfield ;)

Divs 2+ kick off the week of 18th April, I believe.

Not ideal but it won't be a long weekend due to Anzac Day being a Saturday.

School holidays run until the 19th and with Easter there there just isn't a great option tbh
Another crazy decision if those dates are true. Clubs will struggle with player engagement to start the season and also to meet there requirements with sponsor pubs.
It’s an awkward timing regardless but forcing clubs into a stop start to begin the season or play on a public holiday is ridiculous thinking from Subbies.
Trial- Week off- Trial- Rd 1- ANZAC day low numbers?

Subbies can claim that it’s not a long weekend but we all know that it doesn’t mean guys won’t treat it like one. We all know the issues clubs had playing the day after this year.

If we wait until after Anzac Day to start the season, we're finishing in cricket season.
Div 2+
Rd 1- 11th April
Rd 2- 18th April
ANZAC Day- Bye
Rd 3- Rd 7- 2nd May- 30th May
June Long Weekend- Bye
Rd 8- Rd 11- 13th June- 4th July
Wet Weather- 11th July
Rd 12- Rd 14- 18th July- 1st August
Finals Week 1- 8th August
Finals Week 2- 15th August
Grand Finals- 22nd August

You can add another Wet Weather week in the 1st half of the season but may have to settle for 1 next year given ANZAC Day. An extra WWW would mean GF on 29th.

Division 1 could start on the 18th April with Grand Finals on the 29th or 5th September depending on how many WWW you want. Not ideal week on/week off but Div 1 clubs better suited to manage “odd” schedule.
