i think the 18's is a good concept, however, it would be interesting to hear from village clubs. Some clubs have a large number of village clubs to recruit players from, but not all clubs have the luxury. What has been the effect on village clubs? Would this hurt their player numbers? Very few would be coming from the schools.

What are the rules for washout rounds where the whole round is washed out and not played?

I can't recall a complete round being washed out and not being played at a later date, but I reckon it must have happened at some stage. With only two rounds to play before finals, there isn't a lot of time available to reschedule any games not played on Saturday.

Usually clubs agree to play the deferred game on a Tuesday or Thursday night, but this close to finals I reckon that there will be some strategic brinksmanship being played in the negotiations around arranging deferred games.

SRU rules say they can cancel a complete competition round in advance in the event of bad weather with the round being declared a wash-out, and no competition points (including Club Championship points and For & Against points) will be awarded to any team in that competition for that round.

This close to finals, a SRU declared washout would probably benefit some clubs, and not suit others.

Tipped 4/5 last week. Manly have now replaced the Beasties as my untippable team.

With the slop about, how many games will go ahead?
Especially important at this time of the year as many ground staff will want to keep their ovals in good condition with the finals coming up.

Round 17 Tips
West Harbour v Parramatta. Should go ahead. Concord is a free draining oval and it recovers well. MP2B are storming home in a blaze of glory and should win by >10 with a bonus point. I can’t see Pirates taking a beating lying down and expect that this will be a very physical battle with Sir reaching into his pocket to Wave the Cheese about on more than one occasion.

Eastern Suburbs v Northern Suburbs. I reckon that Beasties would be hoping to host a semi or quarter Final. The Beastie staff will probably be trying to source an alternate oval somewhere in the East. If it goes ahead, it will be the match of the round. Two big packs of fatties and pacy backlines with the Maddocks vs Clancy battle at 10 being worth the effort to walk the km or two from where you finally manage to score a car park. In the slop, I like the look of the Beasties and have them to win in a physical mongrel game dominated by Maddocks howitzer like kicking game. Beasts by 7-10.

Eastwood v Randwick. To save TG Millner for the finals, this will probably be played on the top field and Randi-wix will be too accurate and clinical, even in the slop. The Wicks by lots.

Southern Districts vs The Bye. Foregone conclusion.

Manly v Gordon. Manly have been all over the show with their recent form. Gordon will be smarting from their thumping by The Corporation and will be out to find some form leading into the finals. MMM may struggle for a venue as the local council are quite precious with the slop and I reckon that the Village Green will be in the running for a semi or quarter final match. If this goes ahead, Staggies superior slop skills should suffice & see them home by 10-15.

Sydney University v Warringah. St Pauls Oval should be OK, but the ground staff may be a little precious about the cricket pitch which will be like an ice rink to play on. The Corporation by 30+.

A year or two back Woollahra and No 1 Oval hosted televised Grade finals, and the surface condition at both was very poor.

Ground staff need to avoid a repeat. They have announced that Grade GF will be at Concord Oval. The other venues are yet to be advertised, but I'd expect Coogee Oval, TG Millner, Rat Park and The Village Green to get a gig.

While the Colts GF will be held in Sylvania Waters, I am not sure of the locations for the Colts Semis or quarter finals. Perhaps the respective highest placed teams will get home ground advantage, or they may be hosted by clubs not getting a Grade SF or QF.

Round 16 reports from the Beasties

Colt's Report Round 16

Ted Pye struts his stuff

Colts games were played last weekend on the scenic, if not small Lyne Park in perfect conditions and Easts were out to turn around the first round defeats in all grades. This they did successfully winning all 3 and gaining a bonus point in all grades.

Thirds were away early and with several new players they performed exceptionally well in the circumstances with some entertaining football running out 22 to 5 winners.

Second grade had the game wrapped up or so they thought early in the second half after a glut of tries before Eastwood struck back and made things a little uncomfortable for Easts.
Seconds finally winning 41 to 29, in the process scoring 7 tries , six of which were scored by the forwards.

Firsts had a real stop start performance, good at times not so good at others allowing Eastwood back into the game at several times when they should have shut them down,
The final score line was a six try 40 to 26 victory.

So with 2 rounds remaining , Firsts consolidated their position as 4th in the competition , Seconds currently 6th and Thirds are 7th.

But it’s all very close and with just Norths and Parramatta remaining victory in both rounds for all grades is vitally important.

The top 6 qualify for the play offs.

This week we are back at headquarters for the games against Norths.
