After Round 4 the official top eight is:

1. Chiefs - New Zealand Conference leader, 19 points
2. Jaguares - Africa 2 Conference leader, 14
3. Stormers - Africa 1 Conference leader, 13
4. Brumbies- Australia Conference leader, 10
5. Crusaders - Australasia Group wildcard, 16
6. Hurricanes- Australasia Group wildcard, 15
7. Lions - Africa Group wildcard, 14
8. Blues - Australasia Group wildcard, 6

If the teams were to be ranked by table points only with points differential the first tie-breaker, the order is:

1. Chiefs, 19
2. Crusaders, 16
3. Hurricanes, 15
4. Jaguares, 14 & PD of +45
5. Lions, 14 & PD of +40
6. Stormers, 13 & PD of +51
7. Sharks, 13 & PD of +28
8. Brumbies, 10

Blues (6 & PD of +10) would be 10th behind Cheetahs (9) & and ahead of Reds (6 & PD of -37) on points differential.

Further evidence of the failing conference set up atm. Maybe the message will get through some thick heads at the SANZAAR level before they make any more decisions. Good to see the Jaguares delivering on their promise so far this year.

They should institute the Random Munted Team Sympathy Wildcard at the end of each round so that one of the shite teams is in the top 8 and gets to be happy about something for a week.
Or they could just call it the final Australasia group wildcard.

Whoever designed this system was surely using hallucinogenic substances at the time.

Bookmarked for when (if?) the RMTSW is claimed by the Waratahs :)

On the topic of rankings, someone on Reddit has applied the IRB rankings formula to the entirety of Super Rugby.

Some scary picture starting to emerge.

The Kiwis have scored more bonus point wins than anyone else.

The Hurricanes defend just as well as they attack.

The Highlanders are the only Kiwi side with a negative points differential.

No Aussie side has scored a bonus point win thus far.

So based on points on current overall ladder the leader of Aussie conference the Brumbies would be equal 8th with the Blues. Ouch (for ARU).

Top Aussie side on a real log will be in 10th spot even if the Waratahs were to win against the Crusaders.

Big problem for the "Points For" column.

Wouldn't be taking much notice of the Stormer PD. Their only tough match has been the Jags.

Well it patently does exist because it's right there in, literal, black and white.

Yet they don't refer to it on the Super XV website, or the SANZAAR website, or the Foxsports Rugby website for that matter. But if it makes you feel better.....

"Overall Combined Super Rugby Standings

"Note : The Overall Combined Super Rugby standings table is not an officially recognized table under the current format. The new Super Rugby format uses the Individual Group and Conference tables to determine play off places. We publish the overall Combined standings table or ladder as an “extra” indicator of where a team would be on a weekly basis in the overall standings combining the old and the new formats. It is not an official table and is more of a guide to form and where the teams would finish the season and qualify for the play offs."
