Should we add club rugby to the schoolboy forum and call it Grassroots?

Hi guys,

New comer to the forums here and I wanted to make a suggestion however the suggestion box doesn’t seem to be working so I'll write it here:

Sub Topics. They're desperately needed! I was trying to look for club rugby threads and had to click through 10+ pages to find things. I suggest the Rugby Discussion forum be broken up into a few sub forums. ie:

>Rugby Discussion
>Club
>QLD
>NSW
>VIC/WA
>International
>Wallabies
>Rest/insignificant lot
>Super 14
>6 Nations
>Currie Cup, Top 14 etc.
>Videos (hits, tries, tackles)?
>Other/IRB

Perhaps the sub of the sub groups is a bit far but something needs to be done - it's pretty ridiculous atm.

Welcome aboard SF and thanks for the idea.

I guess we've all used rugby forums using the system you propose, or something similar, and the categories certainly have their advantages.

I prefer what we do here - that the most interesting threads, whatever the topic, are on the front page in a daily Darwinian order whereby the least used drop back to the 2nd page and so on.

It has a disadvantage in that sometimes we can't find a thread that was going a few days ago - or last week - but it's the price we pay for what we have.

On some of the sites that use the category system you sometimes have to look in different places anyway because it is not clear which one an old thread is in, or where to start a new one. And when you end up in the right category looking for something you still have pages of threads to trawl through sometimes.

I tend to bookmark threads that I know that I will visit a lot and that saves a bit of grief.

Even with the system we use, we have set up a forum for Schools rugby, and perhaps we could use a few others such as one for club rugby etc. But it works OK.

Thanks again.

PS mods - It would be good if were are on the main forum, or any forum, to get one click into the schools and the few other forums we have - and vice-versa. They may be visited a bit more. I just tried to find the schools forum and couldn't find it in 20 seconds, though I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed.

I should have used the suggestion box? Excuuuuse me.

have you seen the drop down box on the bottom right of the page? That's pretty quick.

There's a built in search function too, click Scott Johnson in the camo clothes above the forum

Lee, check out the 'Jump to:'box after the last post, just above the quick reply box.
You can select the forum you want to go to and click go.

Salad Fingers, I think the suggestion you propose is not a good one for the type of website this is. GaGR is specific to rugby, and 95% of discussion is about rugby; the format you proposed is better suited to a forum/website that covers a large and broad range of topics.

Furthermore, forums with a similar layout to the one you proposed often have "dead forums", which are sub-topics that only a minority are interested in, therefore become very slow and stagnated because no one apart from that minority view and read the threads created.

By having all rugby related threads under the one roof, everyone who posts here is exposed to a greater variety of topics - that they might normally not care to look for - and therefore are more inclined to post on them and the forum as a result stays busy.

For example, if there was a sub-forum called "Currie Cup, or Top 14", I can tell you now I would never visit that forum. But by having a topic like that in the same forum as everything else, I might actually bother to click on the thread and post on it.

Anyway, that is my analysis of why I think the current GaGR forum system works! Keep it the way it is pleaseeee...

By the way, I'm not having a go. But you're only new, so stick around a bit longer and hopefully you'll see what I mean.

Would it be appropriate to shift club rugby into the Schoolboy sub-forum and rename it Grassroots?

I like the way we are set up at the moment. But I have had to look through a few pages to find an old thread so I know what you are talking about. I was thinking the other day that it would be cool to click on say "The Reds" emblem down the side of the topics page and all "The Reds" topic came up. I have no idea if this is possible, just thought it would be nice.

I never go to the Schoolboys forum but I do look at club Rugby threads so I would prefer it where it is.

I reckon for now it could be worth adding a 'Competitions' sub-forum, mainly to cut down on the number of stickied threads.

I believe this is possible with a hack in vbulletin, so maybe next week. That upgrade is very close now

Does anyone else use the "Look and Layout" called "The Yellow Scarf"? Because I still have a message across the top of the screen that says 'were moving to a new server tonight, details here"

Is there a link somewhere to all the videos/highlights packages you guys have created? Is their a green and gold youtube channel? If their isnt you should provide a link! This would be much appreciated as I would like to watch the larkham highlights over and over again!

Doh. [Is that how you spell it?]

I see that every day but it never registered with me.

Thanks - yeah it's pretty quick.

I favour leaving things how they are because as Reddy indicates: sometimes we click on a thread we are interested in only after we clicked on it to see what it was. If it got posted in some category we may not have ever seen it. If it is not interesting it will soon make it's way to page 2.

Maybe have a new forum for club rugby - but maybe not.
