McLinden, Genia, Weeks to start against Stormers

Wednesday, 18 February 2009

The inclusion of 2009 rugby convert Mark McLinden at fullback is one of three changes made by QR Reds selectors to the team to play the Stormers in Cape Town in round two of the Investec Super 14 tournament.

McLinden's selection after impressing in his 20 minutes off the bench last weekend against the Bulls will allow Wallaby winger Peter Hynes to return to his preferred position at the expense of Brando Va'aulu.

Another strong performer off the bench, scrumhalf Will Genia, gets his opportunity to wear the number 9 jersey after swapping places with Ben Lucas.

A third impressive bench player last week, tighthead prop Laurie Weeks, also wins a starting opportunity and his second cap against the Stormers on Friday (3am Saturday morning Queensland time) at the expense of Dayna Edwards.

McLinden joined the Reds during the off-season after a decorated career at fullback in rugby league and has been undergoing a crash course in positional play in the 15-man code, with three trial matches and his first capped appearance off the bench against the Bulls.

Head Coach Phil Mooney said McLinden impressed with his performance, which included a darting run at his first touch of the ball and his confidence under pressure in cleaning up a deep kick from the Bulls.

"Mark certainly showed his skill when he came on (against the Bulls) and we believe he's earned the right to play fullback this week," Mooney said.

"We believe we'll get more out of playing Peter Hynes on the wing as well, so it's a combination of those two elements."

Mooney said form was also the primary factor in selecting Genia ahead of Lucas at the scrumbase and Weeks at prop.

"Will is probably the player in form and he's certainly been a catalyst for our attack when he's been on the field," said Mooney of the PNG-born scrumhalf, who released powerful wing Digby Ioane with a neat reverse pass off a second half scrum.

"Laurie (Weeks) in his time on the field has been impressive: he's a good ball carrier and gives you something in defence as well. He's the form player in that position and warrants selection."

The team is:

1 Greg Holmes (Sunnybank)
2 Sean Hardman (Brothers)
3 Laurie Weeks (University)
4 Van Humphries (Souths)
5 Adam Byrnes (University)
6 Scott Higginbotham (Wests)
7 Daniel Braid (Sunshine Coast Stingrays)
8 Leroy Houston (Norths)
9 Will Genia (Norths)
10 Quade Cooper (Souths)
11 Peter Hynes (GPS)
12 Berrick Barnes (c) (Wests)
13 Charlie Fetoai (Sunnybank)
14 Digby Ioane (Sunnybank)
15 Mark McLinden (Sunnybank)

16 Saia Fainga'a (Souths)
17 Dayna Edwards (Sunnybank)
18 Robert Simmons (Sunnybank)
19 Poutasi Luafutu (Wests)
20 Ben Lucas (Sunnybank)
21 Anthony Fainga'a (Souths)
22 Brando Va?aulu (University)

Mooney said the Reds will need to cut down the silly errors and play smarter rugby if they want to succeed in this year's tournament.

Three key errors - one bad scrum on the stroke of halftime and a missed tackle minutes into the second period, along with a critical turnover with one-minute remaining for Adam Byrnes in the sinbin - changed the momentum, and the scoreline of the match, leading to three of the Bulls' four tries.

?We?ve just got to be a bit more rugby smart,? Mooney said.

While the 33-20 scoreline wasn?t the result Mooney was after, the Reds showed enough promise, particularly in defence, to highlight the improvement the squad has made during the off-season.

?It was a game I think we were in a position to win and we were starting to gain a bit of momentum when we had Adam Byrnes sin-binned and then after that we were always playing catch-up, but there were certainly good elements to our performance,? Mooney said.

?(The Bulls) had a lot of ball in the first 20 minutes and our defence and discipline was very good. Really they scored the try on halftime where they didn?t have to do a lot of work. It wasn?t a reflection on poor defence.?

Winger Digby Ioane was outstanding, highlighted by his 45m dash for the Reds' first try, with Mooney insisting his star winger?s performance was a product of hard work at training.

?He works extremely hard on his game and he?s a far more polished player now than he was 12 months ago and I think that performance was just a reflection of the work he has done off the field.?

After being bombarded with the prototypical aerial kicking attack of the Bulls, Mooney says his side must now adjust to the expansive style of the Stormers in Cape Town on February 20.

?They're very aggressive at the breakdown and they like to play a ball in hand type game as opposed to the Bulls' kicking game, so I think in terms of our defence I think we are going to have to be pretty good.

"They're one of the championship contenders and Newlands is a great stadium, so we look forward to playing them there."/
Edit - let's make a new rule for the Super14. Icon for games = home team

I don't know what to think. I am still a little concerned about McLindon's experience. He looked dangerous with the ball for sure, but I don't think we got to see a kicking game did we? He also still looked a little lost to me. I think I would like Hynes at fullback v the Stormers.

Genia, fair enough, but we're now dependant on Berrick and/or Quade as kicker.

Weekes played well off the bench last week, fair enough give him a go. But are we saying that we were so far off with our 'best team' selection last week that 7 days later we have to change three fairly critical positions? Can't be a good sign.

I don't like to think this way but this game id going to be very ugly from the Red's perspective.
The Stormers will have too much good talent in critical positins to defy anything the Reds throw at them.
The Reds will have to play brilliantly to keep this one in check.

Was is just me or did the Reds props all look like they are all carrying a bit too much around the waste.

I thought I saw Weeks jump for (unsupported) and win a overthrown lineout ball against the Bulls. I don't think Dunning could do that.

So you guys think a 9 - 16 win for the Stormers, or a 17+ win?

I'm thinking a 9 - 16 win, but maybe I'm being too positive for the Reds.

Stormers team, ripped off from another forum:

Stormers - Conrad Jantjes, Tonderai Chavhanga, Gcobani Bobo, Jean de Villiers (c), Sireli Naqelevuki, Peter Grant, Ricky Januarie, Duane Vermeulen, Francois Louw, Schalk Burger, Andries Bekker, Adriaan Fondse, Brian Mujati, Schalk Brits, JD Moller.

Subs: Deon Fourie, Wicus Blaauw, AJ Venter, Luke Watson, Bolla Conradie, Dylan des Fountain/ Nick Koster, Percy Montgomery.

Don't know anything about Naqelevuki, but otherwise a backline that could put on plenty of points if the Reds defence slips.

Duane Vermeulen - he'll be one to watch. If you believe the reports, and I am sure Ben Whittaker mentioned it (QRU High Performance guy), he wanted to play for the Reds.

EDIT: Sorry saw it is posted already.

Defnitely the strongest XV. Good to see Sereli back and Jean on the playfield. Hoping the Stormers will kick less and run back more. They need to be a bit more constructive to last week.

and off course if they want to get a packed Newlands in future they better win this one. Sure they want to win and win big. Slip nr1 is history cant afford another one on Newlands. Vermeulen had a OK debut but expecting Schalk Burger to be big this time. Dont know if it is his haircut but nowhere to be seen. Surprisingly. We need him to shine like we are use to.

It doesn't matter a whole lot which backs are picked if they don't match up physically in the contests. And they have to work together more when they do.

The Saffer teams have troubles in some areas of their play, particularly letting the ball beat the man, but they have their breakdown work down pat. Sometimes somebody may poach the ball a few times like our blokes do, but by and large they want to collide with opponents and knock them out of the way first.

To do this they often go bound into the tackle area and if the Reds or any other Oz team get to the tackle/ruck in dribs and drabs they will get knocked back as the Reds were at Loftus.

When the Reds can stop that weight of hit in the collisions, and thereby stop them from flopping on top of the tackled player, we can think about the backs.

Quade Cooper - watch out for the arch interceptor, Jean de Villiers. It's good to see JdV back on his feet when he looked like he was gonski against the Sharkies.

Also surprise he is back. Was a bit annoying when the cameras keep zooming in at his parents when that happen. Myself as a parent can lose my cool very easily when it happen.

Was hoping they'll give Joe Pietersen another run (seems like a lot of Saffer supporters is screaming for Percy in 10). Joe maybe a bit light but sure is a natural ball player and nippy. Shaft Grant to 12. Now with Sereli back he can go to 13 and Bobo to 12 also.

I'd prefer them to be carrying themselves around the field, rather than something unspecified around the rubbish.

Referring to Bobo - looks like he's getting back to his old form of 3-4 years ago.

You think PB?
Thats right. Look like he also play a leadership role in the Stormers team and was in charge last week after Jean left.

Lee thats why I rate Jean, he have reinjected the careers of both AD Jacobs and BoBo. Sign of a class 12.

I don't think Percy at 10. I just tought last week they should have kept Grant on 10 and moved Percy to centre. That is where he started right. And his expierence would have been good when Jean went off. He has a way of calming the backline down.
