SARU Screws Up Like Only SARU Can

Delay naming of coach. Wait for every possible support coach to be contracted by a province. Then appoint the Bok coach.

Also appear as if none of the support coaches in SA are interested in taking an assistant job. Odd, because Meyer is generally considered to be a nice enough guy.

Meyer wanted most of his Bulls assistants, couldn't get them and now seems he can't get anyone to join him because of contracting issues and it looks as if SARU in their normal toothless manner aren't doing much to help him. I would have though SARU would have helped him secure who he wants but no, they will find a way of making things harder than they need to be.

*sigh*

http://www.keo.co.za/2012/02/21/question-mark-hangs-over-bok-assistants/#more-93478

Four weeks have passed since Heyneke Meyer was appointed and still there is no clarity as to who will be on his management team in 2012.

When Meyer was announced as Bok coach on 27 January, CEO Jurie Roux said that Saru would invest its energy into the recruitment of top assistant coaches. Roux said that the matter would be resolved well before the start of the Super Rugby competition.
‘We have to do that soon, we can’t wait a month because that is too long,’ Roux said at the time. ‘We will be in a lot of meetings and a lot of deliberations in the next two weeks, it’s important that we get the right people into those positions.’
A month has passed since Roux’s call for urgency, and yet not one assistant coach has been appointed. What has happened is that several candidates have declared themselves unavailable citing provincial obligations and the fact that they are already committed to what will be a long Super Rugby season.
Allister Coetzee said on Monday that he had been approached by Meyer, and that he had turned down the new Bok coach’s offer. This revelation by Coetzee was quickly followed by the Stormers and Western Province announcing that Coetzee’s contract at the Cape team had been extended by three years.
The Stormers also took the opportunity to announce the re-signing of defence coach Jacques Nienaber, who will also stay on with the Cape franchise until the end of 2015. The news effectively rules Nienaber out of contention for the Bok defence coach position. The Stormers have also made it clear on numerous occasions that their coaching staff is settled and focused on the Super Rugby task. Monday’s announcement of the respective contract extensions confirmed the fact.
Meyer was already in a difficult position on 27 January. He openly admitted that it would be a challenge to secure the release of top candidates and pleaded to the relevant unions to put the needs of South Africa ahead of their own.
Back then, it was suggested that a number of Bulls coaches were being targeted to join the Bok backroom. Four weeks later, and there is still no clarity on the availability of Bulls backline coach Pieter Rossouw, defence coach John McFarland and fitness coach Bazil Carzis.
They are yet to be ruled out as candidates, but are presently locked into contracts. The Bulls have lost a wealth of knowledge and experience with the departure of Meyer and a whole host of senior Springboks, and so may feel well within their rights to deny Saru and the Boks any further favours. The season is going to be hard enough for the Bulls without an abrupt exodus of coaching personnel.
Rassie Erasmus still appears to be in the picture, although nothing has been confirmed with regards to his accepting of a technical advisor position. Of all of those targeted by Meyer and Saru, Erasmus is the only coach who is currently unattached. Why then has he not been secured for another term as the Boks’ technical guru?
Following his appointment, Meyer said that he needs the right mix of coaching personnel if he is going to be successful. Unfortunately, he won’t get the team he originally wanted. It calls into question the timing of the recruitment process, and the timing of the head coaching appointment as well. Surely this mess could have been avoided.
If the Bok coach had been appointed towards the end of last year, steps could have been taken at an earlier date to secure the desired management team. The contractual commitments to the provinces would still exist, but surely the release of these coaches would have been easier before they became too involved in their respective teams’ Super Rugby planning and preparations.

He can always get Snor as an assitant, he is hanging around in town. Dr Phil is a phone call away.

Brilliant idea. What role would you have for Snor? Mascot? :p

Actually after I posted the above I now read that Nienaber has only been offered an extension at the Stormers but has not signed. Know anything Paarl?

Seems inevitable that Rassie and Nienaber will be part of the team? Then he still needs a backline coach, right?

PORT ELIZABETH.

Former Springbok winger Ricardo Loubscher is the new favourite to become Springbok backline coach for the forthcoming season.
South African Rugby Union CEO Jurie Roux was spotted in Pretoria Wednesday for a meeting with the Blue Bulls Company CEO, one which ostensibly was to negotiate the release of some of the Bulls management staff for the Springboks.
But while SARU are keeping tight-lipped on the matter, and the Bulls have also not entertained any talk of their staff leaving, Loubscher’s name has been mentioned in the halls of Loftus Versfeld as someone being targeted by new Bok coach Heyneke Meyer for his coaching team.
Meyer was appointed in January and has since struggled to get the buy in of the provinces to release staff to the national side, with CEO Jurie Roux undertaking the negotiations to get the best team in place.
Initially Meyer had targeted Stormers coach Allister Coetzee, who turned the offer down and chose to stay at the Super Rugby franchise, and the other contender mentioned in the media, Bok Sevens coach Paul Treu, has indicated he wants to concentrate on the Olympic role in 2016.
This has brought Loubscher into the frame, and the former Bok winger, who was coached by Meyer at the Bulls as a player, was then lured into coaching in Pretoria and has been learning the trade under the new Bok coach and Bulls coach Frans Ludeke for seven years now.
Loubscher has been a highly successful backline coach to the Bulls junior teams, raking in titles in his tenure there, and was also the Bulls backline coach for the Vodacom Cup team that won the title in 2010. He has since assisted Meyer in helping the Tuks Varsity Cup team become a force in the competition and is currently splitting his role between Tuks and the Blue Bulls Vodacom Cup side.
SARU GM: Communications Andy Colquhoun would not discuss the coaching roles before an official announcement was made, saying that there was no new news on the Bok management team at the moment.
But a source close to the Bulls has confirmed that Loubscher is on a “wish list” handed to Roux to discuss with Bulls CEO Barend van Graan.
The wish list also includes Bulls forwards coach Johan van Graan and conditioning coach Basil Carzils.
The one Bulls coach who isn’t likely to join Meyer is long-time confidant and friend John McFarland, whose contract is apparently locked in until the end of 2013. It seems Stormers defensive coach Jacques Nienaber is likely to fulfill this role, with most of the other positions already being “inherited” by Meyer.
The team manager Charles Wessels is likely to stay, as is team doctor Craig Roberts and physios Vivian Verwant and Rene Naylor, as all have long-term contracts with the national union.
Meyer has also not ruled out using consultants in his management team, with lineout specialist Victor Matfield a prime candidate to help the national team out and may even go overseas in search of coaching staff if he cannot secure his team in South Africa.
No timeline has been given for the appointments, and it is clear that SARU are trying to get the balance right, both in terms of having the specialists that Meyer wants, and those that are both affordable and available for the national cause.

Looks like a Bulls issue keep Saru waiting.

No Rassie?

Johannesburg - Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer’s appointment of his management team is at an impasse after the Blue Bulls Company demanded a big fee to release several of their coaching staff to the national union.
It is no secret that Meyer has wanted to appoint a team that he trusts and has worked with in the past, but with several of them in contracts across the country, the negotiations surrounding their release has taken a lot longer than expected.
SuperSport.com can reveal that the Bulls have asked for transfer fees for all four their employees requested to be released to the South African Rugby Union, with SARU chief executive Jurie Roux and Bulls CEO Barend van Graan chipping away at the details over the past few weeks.
According to sources, the Bulls Board of Directors has asked for a R1-million transfer fee each for forwards coach Johan van Graan and fitness guru Basil Carzils, while asking for R250 000 each for defence coach John McFarland and backline coach Ricardo Loubscher.
The quartet are set to form the basis of Meyer’s coaching team against England in the June test matches and are likely to be joined by kicking coach Louis Koen and a number of consultants, including former WP Director of Rugby Rassie Erasmus.
The reason for the difference in asking price for the officials is that McFarland is seen as a Meyer loyalist while Loubscher is contracted to the Vodacom Cup team and therefore not as high profile as the other two.
Van Graan is currently the forwards and attack coach for the Super Rugby team, while Carzils is regarded as one of the best fitness experts in world rugby and has also helped out Namibia in the Rugby World Cup in the past.
Meyer was appointed on January 26 but did his presentation to SARU’s executive last week, getting approval for his choice of management team. He did, however give his list of preferred candidates when he was appointed.
While SARU are keen to get the best management team in place, one can understand the Bulls reluctance to let go of their own intellectual property. To lose your defensive coach, forwards and attacking coach and fitness expert in the middle of a Vodacom Super Rugby campaign is not an easy thing to let happen, and to replace them with staff that are of a similar caliber will take some doing.
SARU general manager: Communications Andy Colquhoun declined to comment on the transfer fees, saying only that the national body would make an announcement when the management team had been appointed.
Bulls CEO Barend van Graan echoed these sentiments, saying only that negotiations were at a sensitive stage.
Meyer’s first test in charge will be against England on June 9 in Durban.

I think Meyer may get one of his wishes, but will have to go for the scraps after that. Whoever coaches the cheetahs attack can't be that bad. Also, how about enquiring with Mallet?

Rassie is already on board on some level so Rassie, Heyneke & Mallet certainly would make an imposing force. Doubt Mallet will settle for an assistant job at a union he has already been the head coach of though. Particularly not after his quota complications with SARU at the time.

Treu has said he wants to focus on 2016 Olympics so he's out... is Smal still an option?

PB, I don't think the Bulls are being unreasonable. Big money in rugby these days and unfortunately it's sink or swim. You need to answer this question : If the Bulls lose these coaching staff, with no financial compensation, and subsequently decline in results or end up in some form of difficulty, would SARU lend any help whatsoever?

I'm pretty sure the answer would be no.

Paarl, my point stands. Why does SARU not get involved? It is becuase they are toothless and weak. Any business protects themselves wiht emplpyment contracts. It is not unusual for a new employer to have to negotiate an exit contratc with an old employer at an executive level. The Bulls are saying we mapped out future with these guys and we want compensation.

In a perfect world everyone would say let's act in the interest of SA rugby. Unfortuntealy we do not live in a perfect world. The WP rugby union would do exactly the same thing.

SARU has no negotiation power with the Unions. You and I both know that. Quit making this a Bulls issue like you always do.

Read: We are sitting with our hands on our balls wiht no clue what to do.

It's senstive because we have told them to pay or get fucked.

Off course Saru got involve and still struggle to give Meyer what he wants. You mentioned WP, they released Rassie from his contract to serve the Bokke. What happen to the country first value in our rugby? Obvious the Brutes wants some unrealistic amount to free up their co coaches.

That's not 100% true PB. Rassie resigned from his position at WP, this had nothing to do with SARU approaching WP. Rassie's reason for resigning was more along the lines of him not being given the appropriate support from the WP board.

The Brutes are just trying to cash in and be spitefull to give Heyneke what he wants. Theyy want to poach more players.

Politicians and business men should stay out of rugby and of the boards of rugby. Members of the different unions and boards around the world should consist of ex players or athletes who knows what is going on on the field, on the ground and what are the problems for players in the games. Decisions should be based with the players interest in mind and not own personal agenda's which leads to selfishness and bad treatment of players.
