WP lose another young talent

Cape Town - Western Province and the Stormers have lost another promising young flyhalf after Sam Lane boarded the plane for Australia.

Die Burger newspaper reports that Lane - the son of former Springbok assistant coach Tim Lane - left for Australia on Tuesday to join the country's Rugby Academy.

The 20-year-old - who was born in Brisbane but educated at Bishops in Cape Town - played for WP in this year's Vodacom Cup but then picked up a bad knee injury. He is apparently being linked with a move to Super Rugby side, the Melbourne Rebels.

Province recently also lost the services of another promising No 10 when Lionel Cronjé signed a contract with the Blue Bulls.

Meanwhile, the Western Province Rugby Union has not yet signed a deal with flyhalf Peter Grant to play for the Stormers in 2012's Super Rugby tournament.

Grant's agent, Craig Livingstone, said they are in talks with WP. "Peter is contracted until mid-March in Japan. There is interest in a new contract in Japan, but in that case he would still be available for Super Rugby," said Livingstone.

I know absolutely nothing about him, I didn't realise Tim Lane had been in South Africa long enough for his son to become a professional that Saffers felt they were "losing" when he moved to Australia!

What's he like, PB?

I dont understand how he could come back if the rebels already have their 35 for next season?

He actually returned to SA to do year 11 or 12 on his own and stayed there for 2 further years.
Given he was in their junior squads out of School, they might think he was one of theirs.

Can't see why he would try make the Rebels with KB (Kurtley Beale), JOC (James O'Connor), Johansson and Cips all possible 10's. Brumbies should have had a close look at him IMO.

I have been following him and opened a thread about him way back in the schoolboys section

My opinion is that he was just about ripe for our Vodacom Cup level. If he hadnt been struggling with injuries he would have played this season CC or S15 rugby. The Stormers/WP had Grant/Van Aswegen/Cronje/Coleman/Duvenhage/Dollie/Catrakillis injured during the season. Stormers will hold on Coleman/van Aswegen/Catrakillis by the look of things and cant keep the whole bunch. Obvious Sam was pretty much part of their planning but he sure have some Aus desires like the Smith Twins.

He made the final trials squad for the South African u20 team earlier this year, but had to withdraw due to injury when he did his ACL.

Thanks guys, interesting long term prospect we seem to have scored there.

Also, maybe I'm just brain dead at the moment, but who are the Smith Twins PB? :tard

If he was just about ready for Vodacom Cup we'll probably see him a Wallaby jersey in six months. Throw em in the deep end and hope they can swim...

PB, I would say you have forgotten more about Rugby and SA rugby in particular than I will ever know, except I think the above post pretty much proves you never forget anything.

Trust me at my age I do forgot a lot of things, have lost a few brain cells down the years (ask the Mrs). It do help me a lot staying in Paarl and having a kid at Paarl Gym and walking line each saturday.

It did note that he is joining the Rugby Academy, which would imply that he does not have a senior or EPS contract. The noise regarding the Rebels would just be that he has been talking with them about a potential contract down the road.

Cips will be gone next year. JOC (James O'Connor) has expressed that he wants to play 12. KB (Kurtley Beale) is going to be played at FB apparently. Although who knows next year with those two. Identifying Johansson as a 10 is a bit of a stretch, even if he has played there in the past; I doubt he is being identified as a potential 10.

Also, after doing a bit of google research on the kid, he sounds like a good get. A bit more of a conservative, game controlling, kicking and passing 5/8th. Would love to see him at the Rebels.

Speaking of which, this is where JP du Plessis will be heading in 2012

Glad to hear he's making a good fist of things back in SA. :thumb

Is a pity things didn't work out over here, but hopefully for him he finds success the SA program.

I havent watch the game but he helped the Lions winning the U19 CC against a very strong Brutes team. His dad is part of the Lions coaching setup, so he'll be happy to be at home.
