Well, in his career he did play with all of the 'old guard' that are left in the side: Thompson, Shaw, Moody and Wilkinson all played regularly alongside him.

Another observation is that he also tends to favour Leicester players in my opinion - he obviously has close links to the club he played with for a long time, but selecting the right players is imperative at this level. Look at the selection today - Louis Deacon (Leicester) picked ahead of Courtney Lawes, surely Lawes would have had a massive impact and clearly gives his all, even if he gives away silly penalties.

Moody as captain was also wrong: he's clearly not fit (just look at all the strapping on his knee) and you can't be carrying passengers in the team, especially not at 7. I can't say that Moody doesnt give his all, but Haskell is a better player right now and should have started.

Sheridan is an exceptional scrummager, as I'm sure the Wallabies are aware. However, the scrum was much better with Corbisiero on, so just having a natural loosehead might have made a big impact from the start.

Johnson seems to pick players on reputation and not form, and that's ridiculous. I wonder if Nick Mallett would fancy coming in to help him?

Even at club level there is nothing that shits me to tears more than that policy & the excuses to keep using that policy.

Cheers for the indepth response, I may have to start watching my NH rugby comps I have little to no idea of the players outside of Ireland.

Commiserations, nothing a few pints wont fix may well be doing it myself after tomorrow night...

Sheridan had gone home and Matt Stevens started, isn't Stevens meant to be a total gun scrummager at the price of his around-the-park stuff? My UK player knowledge is now getting a bit dated, I'd never really heard of Corbisiero, but Stevens was meant to be pretty good (admittedly my memories of him are a touch hazy, pre-cocaine ban era). In any case, I thought England's 8 had slightly the better of the scrums today although overall it was a fascinating battle. Couldn't agree more that Lawes was an oversight. I think Johnno is actually potentially quite a good person to have in control of the England set up, perhaps with more experience (it shouldn't have been his first coaching job), I would argue they produced their best in the knockout match and they actually do have a semblance of two styles of play in the armoury for the first time I can remember, they just need the confidence in the wider game plan which they actually are now capable of.

My very heartfelt congratulations to the French. They were on fire in the first half. They wanted it, great to see. Even better to see England heading home.

Allez les Bleus!

The other thing I should thank the French for is that there is now absolutely no possibility of the nightmare Final: NZ v England. That is the only possible combination of teams that would make me seriously reconsider watching a WC final. I honestly don't know who I hate more.

Stoked! I stood to make $200 if England won the world cup, but that bet was laid so I would have something to feel good about if they did.

Wales v France will be a cracker!

As Blue said, Stevens is mainly a tighthead when he plays for Saracens.

Corbisiero is a young prop who has been around in the Premiership with London Irish and has about 50 matches with them under his belt, and came on about 20 minutes into the Six Nations game earlier this year against France and held his own against their tighthead. Johnno should have noted that Euan Murray dominated Stevens last week but when Corbisiero came on, the scrum stabilised. Playing against France, Stevens should have been on the bench to cover both sides, with the specialist loosehead prop playing.

Never mind though Mr Johnson, all will be forgiven if you lead us to victory in the 2015 RWC at home!

Nah - now that Englands out I couldn't care less who wins the thing if we bow out. Having said that, I'm not really warm to the fact that Wales could well be Rugby World Champions and 7's World Champions at the same time. Shudder.

The enigma that is French rugby, what a beautiful thing!

I won a small amount of chump change on that result, the odds blew out to 3.00, 5 minutes before kickoff. French were paying 1.18 at halftime.

But you almost knew it was coming didn't you? From the outset I said only four teams could win this thing. Us, them, France and England.
I don't think NZ can win it now, with Carter out and McCaw doubtful. Wales are of course the smoky who have come from the clouds but still, I think the winner of this thing will be out of France and Australia.

Aus = $7.5. Get on it

*Sorry this is such a bet heavy post*

France just peaked. The revolution has been run and won. They can't do it two more times- doubt they can do it even once more. Us or the Saffas for mine.
