I'm interested to know what the highest level a current referee played at? In fact, worth extending that to include all referees. Are there any ex-national players who have become referees either now or previously?

Glen Jackson who reffed a Super Rugby match earlier this year & used to play for the Chiefs & BOP Steamers is probably the current ref with the highest playing level.

Eric Tindill (deceased) held the honour of having played for both the NZ cricket team & the All Blacks and also having been both a rugby ref & cricket umpire at international level.

I'm sure there are a few that have played at a high level. However when you watch a ref that has played professionally and one that hasn't, it is hard to tell the difference. Pro players have a lot to bring to refereeing (i'm sure some innovations will come from it), but it's not like they perform any better. Whatever advantage they have probably just helps them improve faster, as we have seen Glen Jackson get to the top in a matter of years.

Alain Rolland got a couple of international caps for Ireland as a scrum-half

Hows that? The international and Super playes would'nt be there (playing at the top level) if they couldn't keep up with the play, and the referee, while having to get round the field, does a lot less work at each breakdown than the forwards do. They may have to work on their speed, but you'd think that they would be fit enough to keep up with general play

Can you imagine if Phil Kearns was a referee.

He'd try to fill up a new edition of Kearnsy's 50 Greatest Scrums in a single game!

Another problem with an ex-tight five's body is that one has to make room for the players to get past you during rucks etc...so some nifty two stepping there...

Referees run on average a little more than forwards and halfbacks during the game. The thing about playing is you are expected to make 1/2 or 1/3 breakdowns but as a ref you need to be there at each one.

Not really, I am an ex 2nd rower and I am fine out there with the players.
