Reds v Force 7pm Sat 29th March, Rd 7

Is there anyone playing better in Australian rugby at the moment than Seru Uru & Filipo Daugunu?

The fact that the Reds have been able to compete despite the injuries/rotation is a big tick for squad depth and the fringe players putting their hands up but those two have been outstanding week in week out.

Edit: maybe Carlo Tizzano. He’s been pretty exceptional too.
Yeah Uru is firming as bench option to complement Skelton. Its a shame he didnt do a better job grabbing his limited opportunities last year.

In other news - Frost does not seem to be killing it at the moment. I'd be inclined to opt for a Williams/LSL (Lukhan Salakaia-Loto) starting pair. Swain has also been in imperious form.

Blame Swain, at the ground you could hear him tell Dolly and co to take a step left at every lineout.

The Force didn't have an issue creeping into the Reds lineout space and BOK not saying anything when you won all that ball.

So you can't have it both ways; encroaching and not being encroached.

What's Swain getting blamed for? 15/16 lineouts and 9 steals? I reckon that's a pretty good day for the Force lineout!

It's on Donaldson. He has to be game-aware there. He wants to be Wallaby 10

The lineout creeping chat is funny tbh because it’s every game by every side. Silly if you don’t.

I think I commented on a Damon Murphy last week about he wasn’t paying attention and the defence just started stepping in when the first lifter noticed.

Think Swain and the Force game prep need all the accolades for just toying with the Reds lineout. They got bested in that facet like the Reds bench scrum got it over the Force late which may be an Achilles heel for the rest of the season.

So, if a player throws a clear forward pass… does he stop … no … he plays on and it‘s up to the ref to see it and call it. If a line out is played inside your 22, and allowed by the ref and touchie, a player would assume he can kick out on the full…

You honestly care more about the Tahs than Tahs fans...

Sorry but I couldn't find a thread to ask this question, but there is a discussion on the line out rules going on here and I'd like to ask one about a scrum rule/s.
Last night Kalani asked for a scrum to be re-set (second half) after a scrum free kick was awarded to the Reds. The commentator (Harrison?) said not in 2025. My question is, is it possible for a teams scrum to be under so much pressure that they could deliberately give away a free kick to avoid giving away a scrum penalty/sin bin/penalty try?
Asked in genuine ignorance.

Just getting around to re-watching the game after being at it, I'm honestly amazed at some of the complaints about chirp from players on either side, it's great to see, really adds to the spectacle. Particularly enjoy Salakaia-Loto full naming Swain at a scrum ~47 minutes in after O'Keefe has given the Force the hurry up. Schoolboy shit in the best possible way. This is exactly the sort of character we want to be getting out of derbies from a product perspective and it's great to see Stan capturing it.

Yes, but only once - all the half arm infringements at a scrum become a penalty the second time around.

Give two free kicks away at the scrum, and you start getting into this part of the law book

I thought he looked good. He's really learnt how to draw and pass and you can see how his pace keeps defenders on edge.

Lynagh also looked good and did well for his setup. Lynagh is unassuming given his small size and lack of pace but he does the basics very well and his out of hand kicking is excellent.

They both look better than Lolesio for me - though I worry for Lynagh physically in test rugby.
If he is good enough he should get picked, if his body can only hand a handful of test matches then so be it, we should pick our best players.

Many thought and probably think McReight is too small but he seems to do OK at test level

He’s also the same dimensions as Mo’unga.
He’ll be fine. If he’s tough enough for survive super rugby (and he’s had a lot thrown at him there) he’ll be fine in the test arena imo.

Lineout was 1m inside the 22. Terrible decision by the ref.
Sadly, if you go back and watch the original kick from Fines, it lands abount 2m OUTSIDE of the 22, but with all the chat and mini huddles, Horton gets told to stand on the 22m, but he then moves another metre INTO the 22. Right decisio, but I feel the ref and touchy should never have let it happen.

It's very funny to me that Maloney calls Horan up on the broadcast just before he gives away the Crusaders/Moana result and they give him a bit of ribbing for it, then a minute or two latter they bring up the 'Live Ladder' and Maloney talks through the implications of Reds or Force win essentially giving away the Crusaders/Moana result in the process.

I think he is referring to the 2025 GMG (Game Management Guidelines) where you can no longer opt for a scrum from a free kick

You can take a scrum option from a PK only, the scrum is no longer an option from any FK - even if that FK was for a scrum infringement
And you can't take a scrum from a short arm pen yeah?
What gives away a short arm, early engagement?
Will teams with shite scrums start trying to give away short arms to force quick taps?
Do short arm pens add up to full arm pens?
Hopefully, you understand my rambling.

I’ve watched it. I specifically replayed it last night to see exactly what happened. The AR makes the mark. Points Horton to the mark. Horton ignores him.

Now - if the kick stays in, or if the Force take a hit up inside the 22 it is okay on and none of us would have the slightest issue with that. But the Force put it out on the full and that’s where THEY - not the officials - fucked up.

Anyway - I’m done. If you want to mount another ongoing diatribe over officiating I’ll leave you with it.

I read something the other day about how badly rugby fans rip into their own game and how bad it is for the game. We just had a great slug feast, with excellent ball handling in the rain by two Aussie teams who have both had their issues over the years. One of them is now top of the table. And you’re bitching about a refs decision that they got right.
