Taylor to debut off the bench for QAS Reds 2nd XV on Sunday

Thursday, 26 February 2009

QR Reds recruit Ezra Taylor will make his debut for Queensland when he comes off the bench in Sunday's curtain raiser match between the QAS Reds 2nd XV and the Junior Waratahs at Suncorp Stadium (kickoff 1:40pm).

The Brisbane-born former Highlanders backrower and lock will be playing his first game since recovering from pre-season foot surgery. He?s one of eight Reds in the 2nd XV squad, which is a mix of senior players, QAS Reds Academy members and talented Premier Rugby players.

The starting pack will feature an all-Reds squad front row of Ben Daley, James Hanson and Jack Kennedy, along with lock Robert Simmons.

In the backs the smart stepping Aidan Toua is on one wing with Charlie Fetoai at outside centre and Rod Davies at fullback.

Former Chiefs and All Black Sevens squad member Billy Ngawini, who more recently played league for the Bulldogs and Gold Coast Titans, is on the bench for the 2nd XV.

Good effort also from Curtis Franks, the Easts halfback. Great to see these club guys getting some recognition. Have to wonder though, where's Swanepoel?

Queensland 2nd XV falter late to NSW
Sunday, 1 March 2009

Nineteen unanswered points late in the match has given New South Wales 2nd XV a 29-15 defeat over Queensland's 2nd XV at Suncorp Stadium.

Queensland led 15-10 during the second half after trailing at halftime, before a late surge ensured the visitors victory.

Both sides would leave the match believing they were entitled to more points in the somewhat stop-start affair. NSW were unsuccessful on five attempts on goal, while Queensland created a multitude of attacking opportunity, only to fail with the final pass.

Charlie Fetoai was outstanding for the young Reds, scoring two individual tries, while halfback Brendan McKibbin, flanker Andrew Shaw and flyhalf Jono Lance all impressed.

Lance?s kicking game was instrumental, consistently pinning NSW inside their 22 metre line.

Ezra Taylor made his first appearance for Queensland early in the second half and immediately made an impact through two strong charges, but more importantly, he finished the match unscathed after undergoing surgery on his ankle during the pre-season.

Fetoai gave the Reds the perfect start when he pounced on a NSW dropped ball, running 50 metres before diving over in the corner, but NSW responded with two tries late in the opening period to winger Damon Anderson and flanker Beau Robinson.

Queensland should have gone into the sheds at halftime in front, but a try went begging when support was ignored.

It didn?t take long for Queensland to grab the lead with Fetoai?s second individual try, but that?s were the scoring stopped for the home side as NSW added 19 unanswered points.

NSW 2nd XV 29 (Penalty Try, Damon Anderson, Beau Robinson, Harry Bennett, Damien Fitzpatrick tries Ed Bredenhann 2 cons) def Queensland 2nd XV 15 (C Fetoai 2 tries, B McKibbin cons, pens)

Robinson was very aggressive and busy but I thought his direct opponent Shaw went better and deserved MOTM.

Funny sort of game that didnt really get going. Hope the two teams provide a better spectacle next Friday.

As the report says McKibben and Fetoai were strong and for NSW I liked Mafi. He looks to have put on a bit of beef.
