Our chase was actually pretty good (most of the time). CFS was getting used quite a bit as the kick chaser. Putting it up high may cut down on the distance of the clearance but it also guarantees those backs are going to be bringing it down in traffic and under pressure, not in an open back field with time to set other players (or themselves) up.

No doubt he will be a bit miffed next year with the arrival of one, Mr Moore, and takes a bench spot for 60 -70 minutes each week.

At the same time, having Moore there for a season to pass down a lifetime of rugby knowledge could potentially be the best thing that's ever happened to Ready's development as a player.

Andrew Ready agrees:

Difference is that George was top of the tree here foe a long time.

Liam is probably number 3 or 4 in Australia (that is not my personal view - probably no. 2 behind Pocock)

Talk of world domination is a bit of a stetch

Watched the Highlanders game first half again last night paying particular attention to the box kicks. They were definitely good and contestable but we still lost every one of them. The Highlanders got crunched as soon as they got the ball which meant they couldn't do any of their fancy counterattacks, so that was a positive, but we were still gifting away possession for minimal territory gain.

The only kick we won that I could see was the mis-timed bomb by McIntyre that resulted in Frisby's try.

It was still pretty good kicking though, even if we didn't regain possession. If they did it that well every game I don't think it would be worth of its own hashtag like it is currently. #bantheboxkick

That's how I remember it Simon so I'm glad you re watched it and confirmed but I should add that I don't think the primary purpose of the box kick from 22-40m is to regain possession, its an exit strategy and to that end it worked well and was out best option.

Yeah I know it's an exit strategy in that situation. Question is whether it's the right exit strategy for the Reds team to be the standard go-to tactic. Certainly it's a lot better strategy when it's consistently contestable, which it hasn't been for most of the last two seasons.

Simmons is back for this weekend's game and Neville has been dropped to the bench, with Matwijow starting. I might have to go back and rewatch the last game but my gut feel was that Neville has been the more impressive of the two. Perhaps the coaches are just trying to 'poke the bear' a little to keep Neville hungry/fired up.

He's played 516 minutes so far this season. That's plenty for a lock.

Might be time for a (slight!) rest

I meant he will travel through different leagues and be a champion in all, go to France, then Japan then England.. Im sure he will be very good in them all

I agree Reg. Looks much more at home playing Rugby than many of the Leaguies that come across with 'Union experience'. Looks like his experience is the real deal.

I'm glad to see the old ginger doing well for the Sunwolves. Unfortunately for Quirk the Reds were oversupplied with backrow stocks last year and he was competing with Gill, Thomson, Browning, Robinson and Schatz for a spot, and if I remember right was injured for a fair bit of the season too. Tui and Lolo were in the picture by the end of the season also, and the young blokes like Gunn and Korczyk.

This way he gets to be to be a genuine starting player, to show what he can do, instead of always the bridesmaid and never the bride. Also, let's not forget every player seems to step up when removed from Graham's coaching, so that's probably helped.
