I am planning on going up to Newcastle to watch the trial game with the Fiji Warriors in a couple of weeks so I decided to look up the ticket prices - $20 cat 2 (must mean concourse seating) and $30 cat 1 (I am assuming grandstand). To me this defies the purpose of putting the game on in Newcastle in the first place - to showcase rugby union in a league heartland. Kids are $23 for cat 1. To me this is way too expensive for what is, after all, a TRIAL. You will have a rotating players policy, low quality rugby (Fiji Warriors will undoubtedly be home based players - non professionals) and most likely with this time of year a lot of stoppages for water breaks. So this got me thinking - What are the other Oz sides charging? Reds Cat 1 $20; W4s Cat 2(?) $20; Brumbies - couldn't get on to ticketek to find out (they don't tell the price on their website). What is wrong with the thinking of the administrators? Are they unaware of the tough economic climate at the moment? Do they think that people will just turn up because there is a rugby game on? I can understand that they have to pay for facilities and groundstaff and such but the ticket pricing is way over the top for what the game actually is - a TRIAL. Max price should be $10 Adults, $5 kids (gold coin donation for Cat2). I am alone in thinking this? I am getting fed up with the game's administration in this country.

Yep

I gave up my season tickets for the Tahs as it was just too expensive. (and you had no control over where you would be able to sit) I just checked ticket prices and they are $483.00 a head for rugby tickets works out a $69 a ticket with one sending you to Homebush.

Bugger that, Foxtel is cheaper and I see more rugby

I'll probably sign up for the mediazone internet package against this year - depending on the fluctuations of the aussie dollar of course. US$140 last year to get the whole S14 and Trinations as well as Currie Cup and ANZC

I thought that S14 wasn't available to Australians through MediaZone.

Got a workaround? PM me!

For someone like myself, who grew up in the days when you could walk up to the SCG and gain immediate entry, when a good season was full of club fixtures, country week at Millner field and the annual North/South Harbour clashes, City Country games, I have gone completely off attending rugby at the ground except for local club or school games.
The costs have become astronomical when you factor in a family, transport, refreshments. In this context rugby has become an elitist sport as the average mom and dad just cannot patronise the games all year on the average incomes yet the various unions derive substantial revenue from the ground providers and they in turn treat the paying public as a milch cow.
Representative rugby is no longer a game for the average person to attend on a regular basis - but that is the price we pay for having a professional era, super fit players and high level competitions.
Que sera sera
